Title: Photo Community?
Post by: RacePhoto on March 17, 2009, 17:46
I recently had a photo refused for "too many like this". I wrote and asked how I could prevent this from happening and why an image that they have none of on the site, would be refused? I suspect it was because they have too many car photos. It was a LeMans team race car that under 40 were built (maybe less?) and it was raced in the late 60's. So it's not like a VW beetle sitting in a parking lot...

When I went back today, the photo is now listed in the Photo Community.

Does anyone understand the photo community and what it means. I've never submitted anything there in the past, but I see many people with images presented there. Is it just a place to show your series of 20 photos of a kitten drinking milk or 30 photos of the same antique red car, sitting in the woods, taken from every possible angle?  ::)

What's the point?

Panthermedia does things unique to themselves! maybe it's a German thing  :-\ you can only put images in the photocommunity on the basis of two per day.

The photocommunity allows other contributors to make comment on your image and rate it, this I think has some reflection to its position in the search engine, but that's about all! I think from PM point of view it allows you to get critique on your photos.

The stock side of things works like everywhere else buyers search, view and buy although in my case don't buy, I have 159 images there since mid January and had 30 clicks! those 159 images are my sellers from other sites so I don't think PM and I are going to have a commercial relationship, also their process for keywords is tottally different to everywhere else so IPTC key wording does not work.

Given that your image is in the community means it is also in the stock so you had a win with your email

Four recommendations, two editors tip, just passed photo 50 there. They are kind of difficult to get things through sometimes. I agree that there is something lost in the translation, trying to read the FAQ and understand community and sales, which are different. Overall if I had more sales, it would be good, because they do pay 50% on the photos that I only have on higher paying sites. I'm working on some editorial the last couple of weeks, which is interesting.

@RacePhoto and DJ Morgan:

1. Your question "Does anyone understand the photo community and what it means":
Look, Panthermedia is divided into a photo community for photographers and a stock agency for image buyers.
The photo community
(http://www.panthermedia.net/index.php?page=bildagentur.php&id=10002&select_language=en)
serves as the creative heart of the marketplace. Professional and amateur photographers can submit images, communicate, share their knowledge, develop their photographic skills and showcase their artistic potential. In the photocommunity you can show your images to other photographers to get their feedback on your images. You can not offer the images for sale in the photo community, though.
After a legal and quality check picture editors select special images for the PantherMedia stock agency which licences the images for editorial or commercial purposes, using a standard licence or a merchandising licence.
Please let me know if you have further questions.

2. Upload limit for the photo community
Together with the users of the photo community we have decided in the past to limit the daily upload to two images to keep things clear and orderly. The majority of photographers voted for this option. However, premium members have the choice to upload three images.
Another reason is simply that we had bad experiences in the past with image spam when people uploaded hundreds of images daily, making it also difficult for those which wanted to recommend photos to wade through tons of more or less useless stuff.

3. IPTC
IPTC is supported when using FTP-Upload. The new system - which will soon be ready - will overall support IPTC.
 ;)

4. "159 images"
David, I just took a look at your images. You had 50 images approved until February 9th, 2009. It can take more than 159 images, uploaded within a few weeks, to get a feeling how well PantherMedia is performing for you so you should give it a little bit time.

I could upload 500 but until the keywording and categories is more in tune with the 'Industry' I just don't have the patience, also to date on 159 images I have had some 42 clicks in stock since 20/01/2009! (3 MONTHS) these 159 are best sellers with other agencies so I can't believe they are that bad.

But your right I am not prepared to give PM away, I'll be patient and see what happens.

Thanks for explaining PC photos and that area. I've started including some photos in both SA and PC as a result.

Sorry about the sarcastic comment about kittys drinking milk or one car in the woods shot from 10 different angles, but that's what I saw there the first time I did a search. Now I see that most people are more responsible and only add a couple of each shoot.

I do use ftp and it does read my IPTC data just fine. Very happy to click just a few boxes, add one category and make sure the best eight of less words are in the most important keywords box. Simple and efficient.

Shhh, don't let the secret out. Panther is a class site and sells for favorable prices. It's not MicroStock.

You have to read those guys like politicians: the grin said enough. It's YES  ;D

I would like to try Panthermedia but since Zymmetrical is a distributor of them and I'm on Zymmetrical, I think it's unethical to upload to both. A customer might be confused seeing a shot from 'Lynx' on Zymm, next to the same shot on Zymm itself, at a different price. We don't need to educate a customer that much  ;D

We check for duplicates, that situation would not occur. If you don't like the notion of the image distribution, you have the option of not opting in with Panther (it is an opt-in program).   :-*
