Title: Can any of my photos make it as stock?
Post by: JTPhoto on January 18, 2015, 12:18
Hi guys!

I haven't even started doing any stock photography yet. But I would really like to know if any of my photos would ever make in this business!
Here is a link to my profile on 500px - what do you guys think? And if any - which photo would have the biggest chance?

Nothing wrong with your photography, but I'd have said it's more "art" than "stock"
You have to ask yourself what concept a shot would be used to illustrate. That's mostly what stock is bought for.
No idea which would be most likely to sell there.
Colour tends to sell better than mono as stock.

You have a good eye. Overall, your work tends to come off rather dark and moody. Stock usually likes bright and cheerful.
Some of your horizons are crooked. I would straighten those out before submitting. My 2 cents!

If you look around at commercial web sites, magazines, sales literature, annual reports, etc., can you see your work being used there given the type of imagery you currently see? Styles do change over time but in general I'd say that the subject matter and overall feel of your images would be a tough sell as stock.

This isn't at all a criticism of the images, just the nature of stock where images are used for some purpose, not just because they're pleasing to look at.

If you want to try with SS, most probably you would fail there, the photos are to artsy and that is not what sales there. Most probably your photos would be rejected with "light" as a reason.

But they might be good for Stocksy, they like your a bit dark mood in photos. There are different stock agencies so I think you should choose for the ones that your work fits the most.

Did you tried to sell them on 500px prime? (Not that they are selling tons, but worth the try)

If I were you I would apply for SS. Your landscape images are above average quality. You are a very good photographer with good eye for composition. If the rest of your landscape photography is the same quality as on your website you should do well in this category. There is always room for quality work and I think SS will accept them as long as they don't have noise problems at 100%.

Good luck.
