Title: pick the mistake in this
Post by: litifeta on April 14, 2007, 05:43
It isn't mine of course, but it is listed as a top seller. i found it sort of quirky funny in an odd way ... if that is at all possible.

The horizon is crooked.  Is that what you are referring to?

If the bottle had washed up ashore it would be lying flat down, I guess.

You can see the photographer in the bottle (the refelction, not the actual photographer).

Something seems to be wrong on the right side of the bottle, just above the shadow: the straight line isn't there...  :)

I thought that was something behind the bottle, but now that I look at it again I think that you are right.  I'll bet that this is probably what litifeta is referring to.

There also wouldn't be sand on top of the bottle (probably from the photographer's hand).

One thing that I do like about the photo is the boat in the background (on the right side of the image).

I dont like the boat in it. it complicates a very simple image.

The two things that jump out at me are the crooked horizon and the reflection in the bottle. The shot has other issues, to be sure, but those are the main two.

You can't see the horizon through the bottle.

And you are right... you can see the reflection of the photographer in the bottle.

I thought the same thing about the horizon through the bottle. As far as the reflection on the bottle - it could be anything.  ???

BTW - I like the boat in the background

Well I can't see the reflection of the photographer, and I think the horizon would be refracted away by the glass anyway.

But I am surprised at how many images I see where the photographer has failed to straighten the horizon.

yes i was referring to the reflection of the photographer. imagine how much this would stand out if the image was blown up on a billboard!

by the way ... I like the shot.

but i noticed the reflection even in the thumb, maybe that is something i look for?

I used the FL zoom option to check further...

The right line of the bottle is straight indeed.  The sun reflection confused me.

I couldn't see a clear reflection of the photographer in the bottle.  Maybe I'm not looking at the right spot.

i still can't see the reflection - ???

i think the horizon would be refracted when i goes through the bottle.  I am guessing the image was taken on the beach WITH the horizon... but i guess i am not sure.

I think I see the reflection (i'ts the brownish one, right?), although it doesn't seem very clear and could even be a nearby tree.

I took several Christmas bauble shots last year and in many I found myself reflected.  :)

I also have close-up shots of an ostrich and in some I can see myself reflected in its eye.

Regards,
Adelaide

and so lies the question - is it a mistake to have the reflection of the photographer in the image?

I have seen a number of fashion photography shots blown up on the side of a bus where eye of the model is 5 cm wide or so (2 inches).  It is easy to see the photographer in the eye against the softbox behind him.  is this neccesarily wrong? I suppose if it distracts from the image (like a christmas ball or jewlery)  but how about portraits or other things?
