Title: Vector critique for rejected image "lacking visual impact"
Post by: OSweetNature on October 26, 2015, 17:08
Whoops, sorry, I realize now that this is the photo section. I should have posted this in the illustrators section but I can't delete it.

I'm rather new to selling vector stock but have about 20 pieces in my portfolio as I try to feel my way into the business. This vector was rejected by iStockPhoto, but I'm not sure why. The reason given was:
"We're sorry, but we found the overall composition of this file lacking visual impact and therefore not suitable as stock. This isn't necessarily a reflection of your skill, rather a decision by iStock to determine commercial applications for your illustration as royalty-free stock."

I don't do vectors, so I can't comment (I like the image, but I wonder whether different colours might be better), but you should be OK to post on the critique forum, that's what it's there for. Read the forum guide before posting.
But there are some great vector artists here who might chip in.

I don't think the snowflakes mesh with the star.  The gradients are very simple, and the lines between areas seem hard.

IMO just ignore istock's idiotic rejections. If they are as senseless as they used to be (I quit submitting there years ago because I got tired of putting up with their idiocy) it will do you no good to try to figure out their actions. Spend your time and energy making good images. They will be accepted elsewhere.
