Title: Contributors are paying envato's taxes..
Post by: cidepix on January 10, 2016, 10:38
am I missing something? maybe I didn't get enough sleep.. correct me if I am wrong..

I have filled my tax information and declared my tax ID.. I am supposed to pay %10 to US from "my income" according to the tax treaty, but envato is deducting %22 or something like that.. (didn't do the exact math)

My earnings from an $11 sale was $4.50 last month.. after the US tax is deducted which is %10 for me, I should receive $4.05

but is it the case? no.. I received $3.50 from that sale and paid %22-23 tax or something like that.. (my W8BEN form says %10, not %22..)

it appears we are paying envato's taxes?!

am I missing something?

btw guys..

even though the example provided was about me, this is not a personal problem..

you "the contributors" are paying envato's taxes..

this thread requires more attention..

I am in the process of deleting my port there. They should report the amount you actually receive...

They are totally immoral. I never liked them starting from their super lax copyright infringement stance from way back. When their top selling templates all featured lifted photos if anyone remembers.  This tax dodging fiasco just reeks of greed. I stopped uploading ages ago and am glad I did.

Stopping your uploads may sound like a good solution but think about it..

if they can get away with making contributors pay their taxes, other agencies will sooner or later make you do the same..

It's not a matter you can go like "oh well, it does not interest me, I am not on envato.."

I would say there is zero chance of getting this corrected. The whole point of the bizarre setup where they act exactly like an agency but claim not to be must be some sort of tax benefit for them or else why do it?

All you can do is stop doing business with them.

Looks like such a mess, I have no idea why any contributor would want to use them now, as they have made a monumental mistake and done nothing to fix it.  Deactivating portfolios does make a difference with smaller sites.  Buyers will look elsewhere when they can't find what they want and they probably wont go back when they see what other sites have to offer.

I don't like seeing sites fail but when they make life difficult for so many of their contributors, they don't have my sympathy.  It would of been so easy to go back to being what everyone thinks they are, an agency.

I have stopped uploading to Envato because of their plan to tax us for money we never received.  I am seriously considering removing my material.  I hope they come to their senses.
