Title: Eastern European Reviewers
Post by: Sion on December 07, 2011, 02:13
I applause Photodune's move to go global in seek of talents. I notice that the majority of reviewers seem to be from Eastern European countries.

I would like to see the next new reviewers coming from Pacific regions e.g Asia, Australia and New Zealand etc. so that our submissions will get reviewed round the clock in different time zones.

Do you have any reason to think that this is unusual?

I'm new to PhotoDune, but where did you see who the reviewers are or where they're from?

Reviews seem to be pretty sluggish at the moment, so I'd rather have more timely reviews. Round the clock reviews only really matters if you're getting super-speedy reviews - if it's 5 days, 7am or 5pm doesn't really make a difference

Indeed - the review queue has been sluggish.  Where do all these photos come from!  ;D

As of this week we began to increase review capacity by 33% - that will take a little while to come on line so we've also throttled back the daily upload limit from 1000 to 500.  We'll continue to monitor the queue to see what else is required.

In other news, we've just hit 500,000 images over night.  Still small fry compared to the big boys :-) but a good base to work from.

Reviews tend to come in around 9am Ozzie time. That would would be an indication that most of the reviewers are down under.

Looking at my own batches of submissions getting approved and coming online, it's more like 9pm.

Does that mean most Aussie reviewers work part-time after work and from home?

I stopped uploading vectors at graphicriver (part of Envato) because of rejections.

MSS is based in Easter Europe.
Ah! So they outsourced. That would explain they have a tendency to reject my good sellers at other sites. Their reviews seem to be purely technical while they seem to have no clue about saleability on microstock. I'm still convinced that reviewing should be done in-house with own people, just like a contributor should do his own keywording. But that's the way it is...

I looked at MicrostockSolutions' web site, but I have no idea which sites, specifically, would be "a who's who list of Big 6 microstock image agencies" to quote from their promo. I'm almost certain that would not include iStock, who for all their faults are still in the big 6 by anyone's measure.

Having an outsourced operation probably explains the rather inconsistent reviewing at PhotoDune.

I'm continuing to see sales at PhotoDune and so I'll upload regardless of the reviewer quality. However the site owners might want to consider what they're doing to the site by leaving themselves without content that other top tier sites have. Remember that forum post on PhotoDune where a buyer said "This site needs more images"? (http://photodune.net/forums/thread/this-site-needs-more-images/54825)

Hi everyone,

I'll try to shed some light on our review team and how things are going on that end.

1) Yes, we've technically outsourced this work, but we also work very closely with the review team to shape the review team such that we can achieve the library quality and author experience we're looking for. Are we there yet? No, but we're moving in the right direction. The team, like PhotoDune, is young and it will take some time for them to really find their rhythm (especially as the team size is growing quickly).

Some interesting points here:

2) Reviewing inconsistencies are, to some extent, inevitable. We see this with our other marketplace review teams and constantly battle it. However, as the PhotoDune review team continues to develop and get into their rhythm many of these inconsistencies will be resolved — especially ones relating to the review process and our policies.

3) The review team works a normal daily shift in the Eastern European time-zone, so that's when the bulk of your photos will be reviewed. However, we also have an in-house reviewer in Australia that primarily focuses on portfolio reviews, quality checks of our library and error corrections as well as occasional photo reviewing.

With a large queue, it doesn't really matter whether we have review shifts set around the clock or if they're all at once; the same [approximate] number of photos will be reviewed every 24 hours. However, having the bulk of the team working at the same time allows them to help each other and work better as a team. ;)

4) As was mentioned before, we've added more reviewers to the team so our reviewing capacity will increase once they've been trained and get up to speed on everything. :)

I hope this helps clarify things a bit more. Thanks for your patience everyone!

Fair enough. I'll submit a few tickets then for those images rejected that sell well at other sites.

Just to make a point, the idea that an agency must take the images you have created that sell well at other sites is a bit of a blind demand. Some agencies want to create a certain look and feel for their collection, other sites might not be targeting the market that likes your top selling images, etc...

i think if you click the option to receive approval or rejections email, you will see the name of reviewer..maybe that's how the TS to make the guess?
