We hope this email finds you well.

We want to let you know about some important changes we’re making to the current Envato Market Author Terms that affect you as a creative contributor to our platform.

Envato is committed to supporting the creative industry and empowering our Authors to share their skills and talents with the world. As the industry evolves and technology transforms the way content is created and consumed, our updated terms will help in embracing this change–allowing us to continue to work closely with the creative community to unlock new opportunities for increased earnings.

So, what’s being updated?

The most significant change in this update is in regard to our license to your content. We’re broadening the scope of Envato’s use of your items to unlock new revenue streams. The updated terms allow us to enter into agreements with third parties to expand the distribution and usage of your content across all item categories on Market (“third party arrangements”).

Examples might include:

    Distributing your items on content platforms across the globe.
    Developing generative AI models that use your content.
    Developing a ‘test/build’ environment with a third party to build new product offerings, features or services.


To avoid doubt, where Envato enters into a third party arrangement as described above, licensing terms will not include rights for that third party to publicly perform, display broadcast or communicate your items for their own specific purposes, ie. for marketing and promotion or incorporated in “End Products”.

Our Author Agreement now also includes the addition of ‘perpetuity’ to our licensing terms. For example, if your content is used to train an AI model, it may not be possible to make the AI forget any learnings from your item. This means that if you decide to take your items down after the updated terms become effective, your item(s) may still be used, in some capacity, by a third party.

The Envato Market Author Terms are also updated so that the indemnity you provide to us includes indemnification against any third party claim relating to a breach of your warranties in respect of your items. This update is generally consistent with the Envato Market Terms.

How will payments work?

You will be paid whenever Envato receives payment by a third party for the permitted use of your Market items as part of a third party arrangement. We do not have the details of future arrangements so we cannot provide you with the fee payable to you. However, this additional usage will be reflected in your Earnings Statement.

When will the updates take effect?

These updates will take effect 20 days from now, on 1 June, 2023 and are available to be viewed here.

There is no need to take any action to accept the updated terms. But if you do not want your content used in this broadened capacity, you will need to remove your content from Envato Market before the changes come into effect on 1 June, 2023. By continuing to use Envato Market after this time, you agree to the updated terms.

We appreciate your continued support and membership of our community and look forward to helping you thrive in this ever-changing creative landscape.

I just deleted 1700 photographs that made me $250 a month ...

I only left 150 crappy textures and backgrounds from 15 years ago ...

I may be poorer, but I don't care to deal with these people with no respect for our work.

This also happens with video.

There are plenty of EXCELLENT microstock and stock photographers and agencies with tons of wonderful works. They are not leaving. They are actively WORKING to feed the beast, because NOW this is a source of income.

I saw also an incredible behaviour: someone is creating actively tons of composites. NOW! In a moment in which we all see Ai's coming: these things are the best to do composites.
But these composites SELL , now. Now they earn money, they could do something with that money.
And there is nothing we, as photographers and videomakers could do to stop these generative Ai to come. We have proven we are totally unable to unite and fight. So agencies will fight to defend some assets until they are worthwhile.

I can see each and every agency change these rules: the last ones are ENVATO and ALAMY : they also included training of machines as a possible use. Ok, they offer an opt-out.

But what does it means for you now? It means : you are not earning without any other effect that not earning. The beast will be fed with millions of millions of other excellent images AND videos.

Maybe photography will return what it was before microstock.

I also noticed that ugly form with Envato. But what effect will have to remove my things and not-earning? Nothing.

We PROVEN we are not united. All the non-internet world proven to be unable to fight as a whole thing, as a "union". No political power, no legal power. Nothing.

This news made me happy. Now Envato will pay me even more money. Among the buyer appeared a major buyer of our content - artificial intelligence.

Envato has always been a garbage company that treats their contributors like trash. Consider this the last straw for me. Removed all my files and good riddance.

I had applied to become an author to upload to VideoHive but something went wrong with my account that they weren't able to or didn't want to fix. Looks like a favour in hiding, glad it never happened now.

That is more than I make on Adobe with more files. Very impressive.

Obviously your choice to delete, you probably have very well doing portfolios elsewhere.

Yes, I have good portfolios elsewhere, but Envato accounted for about 7-10% of my total earnings. I have been doing stock photography full-time for almost 20 years.

I have a portfolio of around 5000 images and had around 1900 on Envato (not my best). I only left 150/200, the worst.

I've wanted to remove them for years because I don't agree with their Unlimited subscription. I've already had them stolen twice to put them on Freepik by downloading the entire portfolio right from Envato. Obviously, this lack of clarity in the agreements prompted me to take the definitive step.

Money is not everything, AI can be an interesting thing to make money (POD sites these weeks are flooded with AI images, they have all become great artists  :)) ) ... but I don't care, I don't want to make art giving instructions to software. I still enjoy using my medium format film every now and then, this is the photography I like, and I prefer to be poorer but do what I love.

I make high-quality images, I spend 1 hour or 2 in postproduction for each image, and I also sell them as prints, and therefore I try to protect them even if today it has become almost impossible.

To be honest today I don't know which way to go.

I'm trying to grow as an author, but the print business is difficult and requires excellent marketing skills. Perhaps the best solution for a photographer who has good skills is to do workshops or go back to work on commission (something I unfortunately don't like but I have to do again if I want to continue being a photographer in the future).

After a lazy absence of nearly ten years I have just started to rebuild my ports again. Last year my income had dropped to 100 dollars or less, now I am up to 300-400. It is a slow process, but I am encouraged by seeing that the new stuff I produce does sell, so I still have a good idea what customers find useful.

It will probably take 3 years of very hard work to get it up to decent levels, but I have promised myself to never ignore my ports again.

Regular uploads wake up the entire port, old bestsellers are beginning to get sales again.

I devote half my time to video and also want to have at least 1200 ai files in the next 12 months with a huge variety of themes.

I will probably still need to take on other jobs part time, or do more workshops etc…until the US stock market is free from the criminals and I can trade again (long story).

But I am impressed that my ports have responded well to uploading and when I do my research I see loads of missing content that I am happy to fill.

Video probably has more opportunities because there are only 30(?) million files. The prices have dropped, but I am still getting a good mix of sales.

Good luck in your journey, it is difficult to find the right balance in such a difficult market.
