Title: Envato Marketplace hits 1,000,000 members
Post by: leaf on October 20, 2011, 02:18
Envato, the mother ship of PhotoDune  (http://www.microstockgroup.com/link/go.php?url=www.photodune.com)has just hit 1,000,000 members and created a cool infographic

The distribution of marketplace members around the world is very interesting, and may be more or less the same for all "western" agencies.

Most are in USA and Europe: we must conquer Asia!

They have a large market base, so that's why they started their microstock market place taking 75% of the cut. If they had 3 million members would they have started at taking 85% of the cut? What an honourable business they are. :-\

I wonder how many members there are like me, that signed up but are waiting for something better than 25% commission before uploading anything?  They're not even in the low earners in the poll here, so there must be lots of us that would use them if they paid a more reasonable commission.

Like Sharpshot, I'm waiting better commission...
For now I've stopped to upload to Istock, Fotolia, bigstock, and i won't encourage sites who cut commissions anymore.

Does anyone know what % they pay designers for themes?  Some of these designs have thousands of downloads.  I've been looking at wordpress themes and I notice that they cost about half as much on themeforest as they do on templatemoster - I wonder why.  Theme can only be used once, I haven't looked but it's likely a single use theme on TM also.

Thanks Leaf for posting about this massive milestone for us!!

Pixart asked about themes, which is our biggest area. 99% of people selling themes with us sell exclusively, and the volumes are large enough that many of them make 70% on each sale.

You may be interested to see that last month for instance we had a new record for most take-home earnings on ThemeForest, a huge $47,000! You can see the details here: [link]http://notes.envato.com/milestones/ormanclark-breaks-monthly-marketplace-sales-record/[/link]

If any of you are web designers as well, I do highly recommend it :)

Wow, and that is with only 15 themes in his portfolio.

I cringe at the amount of customer support he must have to provide though.  At least with our photos we don't have to answer questions (from idiots like me who will be installing a theme for the first time shortly).

"Many of them make 70%"...  What is the royalty structure.  I do like to purchase ethically.  For some reason I have higher perceived consumer confidence with themeforest than with any of the others (trust me, I have spent likely 30 hours looking at themes for 3 new sites).

Hey Pixart,

Ah yes there is quite a bit of support in theme selling. It's much less a *passive* income stream than photography. I think Orman's themes are one of the easier to use (this is total hearsay I've never tried myself :) )

The royalty structure on all our marketplaces is as follows:

Hope that helps!

I have to wonder why we get the same low 25% commission then?  Most of the content from photographers and illustrators is going to be non-exclusive, because its already on other sites that sell more than you do.  We know sites can be profitable paying 50%.  Some of the high volume sites get away with low commissions because they make lots of money for us.  The sites with lower sales volume usually pay around 50% commission.

 • Non-exclusive authors earn 25% of every sale as a flat fee. As you might guess, our marketplaces are heavily slanted towards exclusive authors. In fact close to 99% of all files sold on our marketplaces are by exclusive authors. Though as we branch into new areas like photos, that's changing a bit

Yeah that slant doesn't really work in the microstock market place. Most of the top microstockers are non-exclusive and with the arbitrary actions of companies like istock and fotolia in recent years, I imagine people are more weary about going exclusive than ever before, particularly with a new site like urs. It's interesting that it seems that the commission you decided upon was based on what has worked for you in other markets. It's probably worth doing a lot more research before setting up in the microstock industry.

The royalty structure on all our marketplaces is as follows:

 • Exclusive authors earn 50-70% based on their sales volume. Once they have sold $75,000 they have hit the 70% mark (it's an incremental scale going up in 1% blocks). After $75k they enter our Elite Author group and get further rewards. We are actually closing on our first author to break $1 million in sales!! You can learn about the Elite Author program here: http://elite.envato.com (http://elite.envato.com)

Do you accept just PSD templates, ordo  you demand funcional webdesigns with most of the programming, html etc, done ?

Thanks Collis!  I am totally fascinated by the structure and evolution of Envato.  It is very intelligent/convenient the way all the brands work together.  (I discovered through PSDtuts.) When it comes to the themes they are all put so well together.  So much though is put into purchasing the photos and illustrations that they use.  I'm surprised that you don't have a "buy this image pack at Photodune" and then we'll all be in trouble :)

From what I can see with PhotoDune though, don't you think they are too cheap at Photodune, by around 30%-40%?  This fact combined with 25% royalty holds me back from supplying.

This place has the most ridiculous rejections of my work and they represent a narrow segment of illustration (not good for buyers). They act like they're the only microstock illustration joint on the block. They are worse than iStock. >:( For their sake, I hope they change their ways.

Hi TheBlackRhino! I'm sorry to hear about the issue you are having with rejections.  We value your input and would encourage you to email any legitimate concerns to the reviewer, or support. We certainly acknowledge that we are not the only shop in town and we are very willing to listen to you the author and learn and adapt where applicable.

As to your point on Illustrations, PhotoDune is only our Microstock marketplace.  We have a sister site dedicated to Graphics and Illustrations over at GraphicRiver.net.

Hopefully this clears it up a bit and offers a bit of assistance at the same time.  Feel free to hit me up if you need anything at all.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I submitted to GraphicRiver. I posted here because it's a thread about Envato's marketplace. Not just Photodune. Also, I don't see a GraphicRiver section on this forum.

I also submitted a ticket with my complaint. Y'all really got to lighten up.  ;) The submission process and the reasons for rejection are very, very unusual and inappropriate. If you want to enforce elite standards, you need to encourage artists to spend time creating the art instead of getting consumed with an elaborate and rigid submission process.

Examples:

Rejected for having a smart object (all strokes and placed art is expanded to outlines; I never use smart objects in microstock art), needs more shading/cross-hatching work (strange for a site that has almost nothing hand-drawn) and inaccurate description (not true).

I won't fuss too much about my beaker. But here it is anyway:

just how can we resubmit for 'legitimate concerns' when your boi;lerplate rejection emails says:

=======
Unfortunately we're not able to accept your submission at this time as the image quality does not meet our quality requirements due to one or more of the following aspects:

 - Element or framing composition
 - Noise, exposure, lighting or saturation
 - Chromatic aberration, moiré pattern or other image quality issues

Thanks for your submission, we look forward to seeing more of your work.

=============================

also, i've made several resubmits of soft rejects of multiple anatomy images on 1 image.  you had suggested submitting these separatelybut i explained  that these scans were made at original size from old texts, so probably shouldn't upsize them.  others in this series have been accepted here.  THe resubmitted images were soft rejected without any acknowledgement of that explanation

similarly some maps from 100-300 year old atlases were rejected for copyright reasons, while others were accepted

Hello again TheBlackRhino, sorry for the delayed reply... If I'm not mistaken, if you are receiving emails for your rejected submissions, you can reply to those with your questions but I could be mistaken.  Please keep in mind, you can always submit a support ticket, or even contact Jarel our review manager at jarel

We really do appreciate your patience as we work through some of these issues :)

Hi all,

If you have any issues with your reviews at GraphicRiver, you'll want to submit a support ticket requesting further clarification from your reviewer. If you're experiencing inconsistent reviews at PhotoDune, you can let us know via support ticket and we'll look into it as soon as possible.

Thanks!
