Title: CS3 on XP x64 or Vista x64?
Post by: pigscanfly on June 27, 2007, 19:23
I want to check out if anyone has problem running CS3 and other common applications on Vista x64 or XP x64?

It seems like Vista may have a lot of problems with drivers and software. Or, should I use XP x64 instead? I'm going to run 8 GB of RAM.

My understanding is that CS3 is able to use the additional memory as scratch disks. The 32-bit MS OS cannot address more than 3.5 GB. Linux is able to though... %$#$@#$

Can someone confirm this?

Thanks!

Running on XP64 just fine. Loading faster than CS2 used to, too. Can't say anything about Vista, sorry

How much RAM do you have? Is CS2 able to utilize the additional memory in your system? I just want to verify before I commit.

Thanks for the help!

I Gb RAM. Not sure how to find out what CS3 can utilize, could do a check if you tell me how - I am a user without much qualification to judge what's happening under the hood :)

You should be able to check that and tune it in CS3. Click on Edit -> Preference -> Memory & Image Cache / Performance.

OK, under Preferences-Performance it says:

Available RAM 690 MB, Ideal Range 379-497 RAM, Let Photoshop Use: (user-dfinable number which by default was at 54% and which I set to 416 MB or 60%). Let me know if that helps or you want me to look/try something else

Oh.. you only have 1 GB RAM? I thought you have more than 4 GB. Thanks for your help. In any case, I've found a numbe of articles online and it says that CS3 has no problem running on XP x64 with more than 4 GB RAM. It will not be able to utilize more than 3.2 GB, but will benefit from the additional RAM as the OS will the additional RAM (> 4GB) for disk caching (ie, for scratch disk, etc). So, 8 GB RAM will definitely help a lot.

Thanks!
