If the image is worth all the effort, the most efficient method of sharpening your images is to first of all average them-you would only use this method for fine-art prints- you set camera on tripod take 7 shots of subject starting with +3 ev,then stepwise, +2;+1; Meter as read (0) then -1;-2;-3. you give each image a layer in photoshop, with darkest image as background,next darkest as layer 1,and so on,starting with 100% opacity for background layer,the 50% for layer1,then 33% layer two;25%,layer3;20%,layer4;16%,layer5 and 14% layer 6,flatten then apply unsharp mask as: Amount: 200;Radius: 0.8;Threshold 0.

Smart sharpen

1.open image
2.Select all
3.Edit>Copy
4. Channel palette-new channel(Alpha)
5.Edit>paste
6.Filter>stylize-"find edges"
7.Image>adjustments>Levels Check "preview"
drag black slider to start of histogram-(usually to the right a bit)move grey slider to get clearest edges showing.
8.Filter>noise>median1,5 pxls
9. Selection>load selection (alpha channel-new selection)- check "invert"
10. Select RGB channel
11. View>Show>Check "selection edges"
12. Filter>sharpen>unsharp mask amount 200; radius 0.8; threshold 0
13.Select>deselect-dump alpha channel
14.Ctrl+shift+E
save as jpeg
