I remember I had a Photoshop Bible years ago when it was at version 5 and it had some ok info in it. In all honesty most of the books you find on the bookshelf completely suck. They all focus on the same topics and waste a ton of time showing you how to do stupid cheesy filters that will get you a quick rejection email. Every couple months I go in the bookstore and they have like 100 books on Photoshop. I flip through them .. get annoyed that they all suck and leave.
I wouldn't waste $30-60 on a PS book. Just use Google .. it's free.  ;D

Yesterday I figured out that thru my local library I can read e-books from Safari Online so I would not buy any books.

hit the library for books, doesnt matter if it is a few versions old, especially if your looking for the basics.

+ there is linda.com or kelbytraining.com for subscription video training

& russell brown has free videos

there is lots of stuff on the net but a lot of it is more suitable to 'how do I..."

Anything by Scott Kirby

I reckon his cousin Scott Kelby is better __ and far more well known too.

A Lydna.com subscription for $25 a month is well worth it...  Plus you can enable it/disable it at will.  So I just use it for 2 or 3 months a year of intense training and disable it the rest of the time.

It's worth having a couple of books around, for reference !  The number of times I've reached over and grabbed one off the shelf !!?  ;)

Scott's CS4 book is crap, unless u have bridge and know nothing about ACR that is !?
Normally his books are great though.

CS4 in easy steps is a good reference book, but there are dozens !  :)

I second this. Except I went all out and took a year subscription for $365 and this allows you to download exercise files so you can follow right along with the video. Then once your subscription is done, you still have the files to go back and refresh your memory with.

I have used Classroom in a Book for Dreamweaver and Flash. They are good too, but not as in-depth as lynda.com.

Lynda.com - highly recommended.
You also get access to many other courses, e.g. Flash, Illustrator, etc.

Check out how many courses they have for PS CS4 alone:
