I started uploading to Pond 5 and have about 170 images on line to test the waters. Has anyone had much lucky selling photos through them ?
-
;D Testing with only a part of your images is NOT working !!!
If coca cola would sell in just one small city with just 20 bottles..
That`s not working.
-
P5 is not good for photo sales.
They do better with videos.
But despite 50% P5 is still well behind SS in sales.
Reason? NO investing in sales. :o
What's the point uploading to deal of 50% or even more when nobody buys! :-\
But why would P5 care...they've got $61 millions in funding to go to eternal vacation ...plus all they ever wanted was IPO to get rich, hence "we-look-after-artists" bs PR for naive masses. :-X

If he had put 170 images on SS to test the waters he would have seen a result. The fact that he didnt on P5 just means that sales are not plentiful there. So the test works fine.

Their review process is also a mystery. I had 80% rejection rate for photos already selling well at 5 other sites!
lff
-
Pond5 seems OK to me - I have just started uploading videos, and will hopefully make a few sales - I like their royalty rates to be honest
They are Australian as I recall??

I've had some photo sales there but they are definitely slow. They do not have subscriptions so when you get a sale it is for more than pennies - I think the least I've received for a photo sale there is around $2.50. Plus they pay out promptly when you are over the minimum of $30. You will need more than 170 images there to see many sales so just keep uploading. Or not, if you don't think it's worth it.

They don't have any presence in Australia, nor in Canada, UK.... they target small markets like Argentina/Czech... hence weak sales! :o

Very poor photo sales on Pond5. We sell mostly video there but I add our photos because their uploading process is pretty easy (no categories, etc). We've sold 4 photos this year with a port of over 600 images. Not even enough for a payout (which is actually $25) but since the photos are extra on top of our video sales, it works. I would not submit there with only photos (or I would not have high expectations).

Raise your prices.

It depends on whether you have a portfolio that's already established at other sites. If you do, then you know what sells and what doesn't (after the fact; I'm not saying I could ever know for sure up front).
A long time ago, another stock photographer shared the idea that for a new site, give them 300 of your known sellers. If they can't move those in a few months, then you know enough not to bother giving them more.
Clearly there are exceptions - primarily for specialty sites or new ideas (like Creative Market selling PSDs and more complex things).
Regarding the original question, Pond5 has a low payout and it's automatic once you get to the threshold, but I found the low (and not growing) photo sales and painful upload process a deterrent to further uploads.

If pond5 was a place for photos i would already have uploaded a bunch.Let's not kid ourselves here the only reason someone would treat p5 as a stock image site would be if he already had a very good and big collection of commercial photos selling at ss and other sites and would upload and price his best ones at 400 and 500usd in hopes of getting a couple of big sales a month as an added bonus.
To those familiar with pond5's artist's resources every week there are a handful of very high priced sales by producers that propably sell these like hot cakes at other sites and just land 400-500 single sales at p5 every couple of weeks or so.
There are also a few guys mostly doing dslr timelapse who upload select photos priced at 15-25 and get a number of sales, (again) ,as an added bonus.
Too bad i delete my tiffs after i upload a timelapse i might start uploading some photos but i prefer to focus on video.

I'm having 1-2 sales per month with ~500 images. Similar as with Photodune or CanStock. And with their 50% commission I'm slowly but surely reaching a payout.
-
In 7 - 9 months I sold 4 pictures with 2000 files in my port... :-\
-
The occasional sale with 1,200 photos. I like them because of the 50/50 split but sales are pretty slow.
-
My photos are on P5 thru Pixmac. They sell about even with other low tier photo sites. I still upload via pixmac cuz the process is super easy there. I don't know anything about setting my own prices, so I guess they are at default. I been getting around one payout per month on a bit over 5k images, so to me its worth it.

I have 4,288 illustrations on there as of today. I've made about $100 (much more than I would have made before they acquired Pixmac). Just pennies for only 1.5 years. But the submission process is practically effortless and the commissions are decent. So I keep uploading.

Some people are having luck and making money selling still photos, not sure how many but I checked the artists resources page today at Pond5 and almost fell off my chair at the prices three photos just sold for, in the $500 range, thought it was video and I clicked and they were still photos.......nice to see!

Ha ha.... Unnecessary comment coming from TickStock. SSArtist has nothing to do with SS!
