Title: Big surprise of Pond5's new "price test". They actually raised price on most
Post by: blvdone on July 10, 2024, 06:22
I now see no more $25/HD or $27-50/4K clips I used to see from some major high quality contributors.  Pond5 raised the minimum HD price to $59 and designated those clips as "Standard footage".  Pond5 designated those 4k clips as "Premium footage" at $149/HD or 4K.  Many higher priced contributors with good sales record are excluded from this price test.  I'm very happy with this price test.  For years, Pond5 promoted $25/HD clips to fight against race to the bottom trend, but finally realized there aren't much money to be made pricing at such a low price.  Based on my own test this year, buyers pay $149/HD if they really need that particular clip.  I hope this price test will bring higher revenue to Pond/Shutterstock and contributors so that this new $59/HD minimum price will stay for good.

Actually, I found "Standard footage" are priced at $59 for both HD or 4K.  But most 4K clips are not priced at $149 as "Premium footage" tier.

Most of my clips above 720p are now $149 for HD or 4K.  That raised my HD price, but lowered my 4K price.

I'm actually OK with this move.  I prefer standardized pricing across the board.

However, I see that some producers' portfolios were either untouched, leaving their original pricing, or dropped to the "standard pricing" of $59.  I suspect these users are those that loudly complained or like to make waves in the forums.

They didn't change my prices either because my prices were higher than their "Premium" or "Standard" tiers already.  So, I'm happy to see all other clips' prices gone up.  I suspect $59/HD or 4K clips are lower quality clips that never sold.  So, it's all good to me.  I really hated seeing high quality $25 clips from top producers like Yuri's PeopleImages.

Just found out this price test is probably USA market only.  I used VPN access from UK and saw those El Cheapo prices still in tact.

blvdone, I would like some information.

A few days ago, the HD video I priced at $25 was licensed for $144.60, leaving me a commission of $57.84. (Explanation Premium License). This happened twice.

2 days ago, the 4K video I priced at $50 was sold for $90.35, leaving me a commission of $36.14. (Explanation Custom License). But when I open the video to buy, it appears as 4K for $20.

Why do they pay more than we want to buy the video? Or, do these types of sales yield much more income when you price it higher? (My English is a bit bad, I hope it's easy to understand :))

My advice to you is to stop pricing your clips so dirt cheap.  You probably will end up making a lot more money if you price your clips at decent prices.  I currently price my regular HD clips at $117 and 4K clips at $148.  My top selling clips at $149/HD and $199/4K.  Any other question, you should email to [email protected]

The prices you set are for individual licenses, custom and premium usually sell for more than your price, because of the additional rights/ higher audience size etc.  8)

I’m left in the dirt. Each year I clear about $1500. This year to date I’m at $145. Trajectory is $290.  Something changed when SS bought them. I know there are swings in any business, but this pattern is repeatable for almost seven months.  I think that’s enough to conclude that P5 is now dead for me, like RF 123 was.

It doesn’t seem to matter that they can price my content for peanuts, even then I’m not getting any sales…..and the few times I do they are image sales not vids.

Very dissappointing.

Pond5 is doing good for me this year, last year I made 2378$, this year till today 1960$ (147$ sold today). It depends on luck in my case, as I have some unique editorial clips, but it's a very specific niche.

I'm feeling positive about the recent price change. It makes sense to have a simpler price structure and to adjust prices based on where people live and their purchasing power.

Today, I made $50 from a HD video I listed for $44 as part of the new premium collection in the US pricing these HD videos at $149. The buyer paid $119 probably with a discount.

I'm pleased with this new change, but only time will tell how it will work out.

Perhaps your videos are exclusive to the stock?

It's hard to tell for me too at this point Danielvisuals.
According to my stats all i can say is something change in May/Jun. Probably the price test but i am only guessing.

Since then compared to previous months and years, my views have decreased to around 30% (from 10-15K to 2-4K). Interestingly, this decrease is also reflected in sales, resulting in a 70% drop.

So now I kind of having a "back to the future" feeling where my income from sales these last months reminds years of 2016/2017 or even earlier. At that time I had around 5K videos compared to nearly seven times that i got today.

The value aspect is that despite the big sharp drop in sales, the Revenue Per Download (RPD) in P5 has more than doubled. It's nice but to make me decide to invest in new equipment? Pay models? Or in animation, build new 3d models and make 3d renders? Not for microstock. In a Pond of 43 Million assets it is close to ten times more profitable to do a project for a client.

When someone here talks about high prices for videos, higher than shutterstock prices, they mean premium account maybe?
Many authors do not have premium account on pond5 and do not want to have it.

I’m happy with how pond5 is performing this month.

I’m hoping this is the new normal following some changes in their price structure.

Are others experiencing the same?

This month is already my best this year, but July had 0 sales, so not sure yet it makes more on average, time will tell as usual  8)

A bit off-topic but I have to mention that recently their review have been great. Recently, they've been reviewing within a 1-2 days and sometime even same day, so credit where credit is due.

I think Pond5 will make a lot more money because of the new $149/HD or 4K "Premium" tier on many clips that were formerly priced at $25/HD.  It was a big mistake to promote $25/HD clips.  They finally realized that probably and potentially after my price test of $149/HD on my bestselling clips.

Let’s hope that this is the new normal!

The $149 premium collection for the US will most definitely boost income.
