Title: First Sale on Pond5
Post by: Carl on September 08, 2012, 05:22
I just had my first photo sale on Pond5 (been selling video there for years), and I gotta tell ya, it felt * good to get $7.50 instead of 27 cents!   :)

I've sold also 5 photos this week for a "at last" fair commission, Pond 5 is simply a perfect agency, I pray for its long life and wish they'll stay fair all along.

At What prices are most of you setting your Images?

Most images seem to be set either at 5$ or 10$.

What are your thoughts?

10$ seems to be a good price for most of the cases, 5$ too low for large file.
Don't forget the high prices buyers give for pictures at Istock, contributors usually only got 15-20% !!!
After all, with Pond 5, you are 100% responsible and you can choose the price higher for some rare pictures, that's simply great! YOU are the seller!
Difference between Pond 5 and other agencies is simply like life and death ( I know, death is also a part of life):)

"Don't forget the high prices buyers give for pictures at Istock, contributors usually only got 15-20% !!!"

Just to clarify, those royalties are for non-exclusives. Exclusive contributors get 25% - 40% of those high prices.

Very true.

Now we just need to do our best, that the contributors don't undercut their own prices :)

A high of 45% is quoted, so there may be a very few superstars who get that, especially if they didn't spread their media and got RC-shafted when they split them.

Yes, sorry, for Istock, you have to be sticked as an "exclusive one" to get almost the same royalties, but you can not fix the price, they can do that they want, and they do!

I just stitch them together in Photoshop and save as new files for each combo, and use the combined file. Same as for iStock.

Most images seem to be set either at 5$ or 10$.

What are your thoughts?

I think the market will support a price of $15 for the largest size, and smaller sizes priced proportionately, which the P5 system will do automatically.  That's what I'm pricing my material at, and I've stopped uploading to the other sites, which means my material will be sold at a reasonable and fair price (with a reasonable and fair commission) from now on because it will only be available on P5.

Yes i agree. I started off pricing my better images at $15 and the rest at $10.

Quite a risk you are taking with only uploading to P5 ;)!

Perhaps, but I don't see it as risky.  I see it as just good business.  If I want to get a certain amount for my photos, it doesn't make sense for me to make them available for less on other sites.  Would you agree?

In theory, so long as they can pull in enough buyers.
As they already have an existing video buyer base, it could work out well.

123RF. Contact them (Pond5), they will disable your 123RF port for you if you want to sell direct.

HELP!  How does one go about attaching a MR to a photo when uploading?  I can't seem to find a way to upload a release or atach it.  Also, how do we make an image EDITORIAL?

Thanks for your help!!!

To attach a MR:
If you're looking at your uploads, click on the "releases" link located to the right of the "New Upload" button.  It will open a list of releases that you've uploaded so far, and you can click on the upload link located above and to the right of that list.

After your new release is uploaded, navigate back to the uploads page.  Click on the pull-down box below the list of your uploaded files.  (This pull-down list is labeled "actions:"

From the pull-down list, choose "Attach release," and choose your release from the pop-up list that will appear.

Choose the files to which you wish to attach the release by clicking the box beside each one.  Or if you want to attach the release to all files in your uploads list, click the box above or below the list to choose all of them.  A check mark will then appear beside all of the files in the list.

Click the "execute" button.  A pop-up window will appear indicating the progress of the operation.  After it's complete, you can close this window.

I don't know of any way to designate material as editorial.  I'm not even sure they accept it.

Thanks! I just sent an email to them. I hope it is possible to delete them gradually. I don't understand the FTP upload very well. Do you have to choose every time for a different ftp. Ftp , ftp 2, ftp3?

had anyone worked out how to apply a template to many images at once. Apply video template doesn't work (file xxx is a sound clip error). When I make a sound template it gives me 'this is not a sound clip error'  ;)
Applying the template individually to files in the edit window works fine.

Dantheman, that should not be happening. Could you please describe the browser's behavior or any errors you get and send it in a short e-mail to our customer service at [email protected]. We would like to resolve this. It's already a long process to tag your files, it shouldn't be more complicated than the necessary steps.

Roadrunner, please check the How do I Upload and Attach a Model or Property Release? knowledge base article at the url http://help.pond5.com/customer/portal/articles/295751 (http://help.pond5.com/customer/portal/articles/295751). It has screenshots for visual reference.

Curator will make the image editorial. So just attach a quick note to the curator writing that a specific image is intended for editorial use.

Apologies, but we don't have templates worked out for images just yet. It is something we are actively working on right now. The workaround is to use CSVs: http://help.pond5.com/customer/portal/articles/625381 (http://help.pond5.com/customer/portal/articles/625381)

So far I have managed to apply the template one-by-one from the edit page. Takes a couple of seconds for each image, so still one of the fastest submission process in the industry.
One more thing that doesn't work for a long time now, for images as well as videos, is the view count. But I'm sure you know about it. ;)

Title: Re: First Sale on Pond5

Until recently, they were strictly a video site, and I've been selling video there for years.  Now that they're selling photos, I'm uploading like there's no tomorrow.  When you go to your "uploads" page, there's a "type" button just below the search field.  If the type is video, that explains why you can't see your photos.  Change it to photos, and voila!

Hi Carl!

Have you checked out their sort order for stills pictures that is?  well I am a bit surprised!  bit of a nightmare actually. I uploaded lots Scientific and sci-fi images, model released and everything and whatever you upload in stills seem to end up on the very last pages, before that is tons and tons of just isolations and lots of really irrelevant material.

Basically they are a video supplier but I am beginning to wonder how long experience they have in picture and sort algorithms?

I'm always interested to hear about a new agency that actually makes some sales at a fair price.

How smooth is the keyword/title/description process?  If it doesn't  read and accept the IPTC just about as-is, that's a non-starter for me.

Yes! so was I. heard some very good things about them so ofcourse I joined, only to find out from the community forum: the default search is all screwed up and changed in favour of new artists, the moneymaking pics are pushed aside and all in favour of giving others a chance.
Must say I have never heard such drivel in all my life. Its supposed to be a business not a charity. :-\

All of my IPTC data comes through in lowercase so I have to manually edit the title and description.  Is that just me?

Also, the city and country come through blank even though I include those as well.

However annoying, in the end search engines are case-insensitive, so I'd just leave in lowercase (manual editing defeats the purpose of using IPTC to save time).

Yeah, it sucks especially if one has place names in descriptions.

Yes, you are correct and in a pragmatic way it does not matter.

However, with my OCD and trying to present my stuff nicely I just don't like the looks of city names or other terms all in lower cases.

What I dont get is that they already have 8 mil photos online. But the whole site is geared towards videos and sound fx. Photo support is very limited and quite complicated to edit.
