Title: Nature recordings on Pond5?
Post by: icefloe on October 18, 2017, 06:39
I am new to Pond5 and have uploaded 36 files of nature sounds. Some of them are selling on Getty. I dear say they are of high quality with birds, wind, water and so on. All of them got rejected with no comment. Is this normal?
I also have uploaded a few pretty crappy video files, in my opinion, and they got all accepted...

Don't know if it's normal, but maybe you could post an example so we could listen? Hard to judge the quality otherwise.

They might also already have (what they feel is) enough of those types of sounds.

I actually buy sounds like that regularly, although not from Pond5, and find a good variety to be very important, since I don't want to use the same wave/wind/bird sounds in all my films. Ideally they should be at least 2-3 minutes long, preferably longer, and they must also be of really high quality, a lot better than my camera's internal mic.

Here is one of mine with gulls and waves on Getty: http://www.gettyimages.se/music/download-songs/530469 (http://www.gettyimages.se/music/download-songs/530469)

Maybe they were too short. Most files are under 2 min long. But anyway, how am I supposed to know when they don't tell me anything? That is what irritates me.

Sounds like high quality sounds, and usable too. You could always write Pond5 and ask. They are usually very friendly.

Have you tried putting together albums/collections for places like Splice?

That kind of thing wouldn't be too hard to loop, so people can have as long as they need. Might help with sales.

Yes, but 1-3 minutes minimum is still important because our brains are way too good at picking up repeating patterns.

Thanks. Didn't know about Splice. Thanks for the tip. I'll look into that.

Sure, that's where I buy most of my samples/sounds, but I don't know how selling works over there.

Pond5 might have over-saturated with same sounds and they are rejecting similars. We too had some video clips rejected because they are over-saturated. On the other hand, Getty is loosing old and new contributors because of many reasons (http://video-stock.org/contributors-leaving-istockphoto-getty-images-is-for-the-best-of-whole-stock-industry/).... that is why they probably accept everything they could get.

But a one minute track looped to five minutes... I don't think anyone would notice. 10, 20, 30 seconds... sure. And if it was just a 'seagull sounds CD', but if it's the soundtrack to a video that people are watching. Should be ok!

Yes, which is why I wrote 1-3 minutes minimum.  ;)

Imagine a slow video with ambient, natural sound only. If there are any specific sounds, maybe seagulls fighting, it becomes very obvious if that repeats, as nothing in nature really repeats IDENTICALLY. Especially if the video is 20 minutes long, and it repeats 20 times. A one-minute loop might not be noticeable, but it can be, so a longer real recording is always better.

If a car or a boat ruins everything in the middle, just cut that part out and stitch the rest.

Longer is better, and that way the buyer (me, for example) can cut it up into smaller pieces to try to randomize it even more over a more generic background atmosphere.
