Hello forum,

I'm still relatively new to the stock world but trying hard to generate footage that doesn't suck and just adds to the pile of image waste. Trying to do so on Pond5 (among others). And now there is this:
https://www.pond5.com/collections/2840465-user-generated-content

For sure you've already seen this, so if there is a thread in this forum talking about it, please let me know. If there isn't, can we please address this topic here? I'm super confused. Like - what? Pond5 is selling low quality YouTube-ish clips for 282?! Guess their "We can make exceptions for unique content, but these exceptions are rare." - guideline is applying here  ::)

But still: is somebody actually buying this? What for? It's already difficult for me to imagine most of the more conventional footage in an actual productions, but these clips...?  Would love to see a commercial with one of them in the real world. If you happen to know any, a link would be much appreciated.

Also wonder how much the "users" who "generated" this content are making out of this. I saw that it's a coop between Pond5 and Newsflare but didn't go into it deeper. Maybe I should - seems more lucrative than what I'm doing atm. It kinda feels wrong, though. Some clips really disgust me - there is quite some (self) exploitation going on.

The market for footage (and stills) is not only large it's also very broad in the style of footage that is needed. I find the collection interesting and whoever compiled it did a good job. 282 Euros shouldn't be a burden at all for anyone interested in it.

Even though I'm a P5 contributor, I hadn't seen this before. Appreciated your link and calling attention to it.

But what exactly is this "user generated content"?

Is it somehow different from the rest of the content that we contributors generate?

What makes these clips special enough to be worth $300?

What's with the VERTICAL clips (which I thought were verboten)?

Does P5 make some kind of exclusive selection of these?

Can one somehow apply to get one's footage in this collection?

Curious minds want to know. :)  So thanks in advance if anybody can explain.

P5 front page, collections slider, the guy on the scate with a helmet holding a selfiestick smiling

About the vertical clips, had the same question some time ago, if they are accepted and if they sell.
For sure they accept in P5, I tried uploading some, still do from time to time, but no sales. (at least for me..)
As far as I remember AS didnt accepted for sure and I think SS same didn't accept.

@Amelie, probably you will mot see any commercials out f those clips, they are marked editorial :)

It is interesting though  if people subbmiting those to Newsflare took any money or just gave away to be viral.

I agree - it's an interesting collection. However, some videos are just too much as they display their protagonists pretty undignified (for the lack of a better word rn). At least, those clips are editorial and not commercial, as @george7 pointed out. Thanks for that reminder, I overlooked it. It makes me wonder even more, though, who is using this footage for what. I can only think of TV Shows with compilations of "The craziest Cats / Dogs / People / whatever". But apart from that...?

Good questions. Would like to know, too. I actually have one clip shot by my brother with his smartphone that is quite funny. Will try to offer it to Newsflare or/and Pond5. Will post here IF they say anything interesting.

My experience with selling on Newsflare has been interesting, from hundreds of dollars to literally pennies per clip or edited series of clips, mostly pennies but the high dollar sales are nice and you are paid in British pounds which coverts nicely at the moment.

The obviously are more editorial but good spectacular stunning footage of anything can sell there, one of my best sellers there was a sky on fire red sunset.

No, you cannot make a living selling through them but one very nice thing about Newsflare is you see exactly who the buyer is of your footage, it is included in the sales reports, you don't get to set prices, that's all done by them and I am not sure what's involved but when something sells you have full transparency, you see who the client is and that's just awesome.

@mathamarks  "What's with the VERTICAL clips (which I thought were verboten)?"

This is new to me as well but Pond5 is also getting into vertical and it's on there site somewhere, I guess it was made popular with Instagram and it might be where things are going, I have seen a few of them on social media and it saves you having to turn your phone horizontal to watch the video :)

Yes times are a changing.....

Excactly my point ;) Like...what? But okay, it's all about "authenticity", isn't it. These kind of clips may be the next level of it, like the real realness. Or so it seems comparing pricing.
