Title: P5 - Is it worth to offer different video resolutions?
Post by: StockPhotosArt.com on May 24, 2015, 01:34
Hi!

P5 only offers the native resolution of the original video uploaded and doesn't convert it to smaller resolutions except for 4K. So, someone uploading a 1080p video will only be sold like that and not downsized to 720p, SD or Web.

Is it worth the trouble to downsize the original video and offer it in smaller sizes?

I understand that. The question is, by supplying different sizes with the corresponding price reduction, could sales be increased?

I've licensed videos on other agencies where the buyer downloaded web and SD resolutions. So,they didn't need the full HD. If P5 only supplies this size aren't buyers looking for other agencies where they can get a smaller version of the video and pay less?

And since in the other agencies we don't get 50% of the sale (not even close) aren't we also losing money? Not only by licensing smaller sizes in agencies where we get a smaller commission, but by driving away buyers from the agency that pays us better on all sales?

I'm afraid you are right StockPhotosArt
Just I'm not sure if the huge work of preparing different resolutions but then upload and tag all of them worth it.
Also with the automatic downscaling of the 4K clips there are some problems. Customers don't find the downscaled version in the search before they enter in the specific tab of the clip. If they exclude higher prices or 4k resolution from their search, they are not going to see the HD version of the clip.
So there are big problems in P5 about resolutions.

For this to work P5 needs to integrate auto downsizing.  No way most contributors are going to spend all that time downsizing and uploading the same video clip 2 or 3 times. I won't.

Are there many buyers wanting lower resolutions? It is very rare that I get sales of clips at lower resolutions on sites that offer them. The vast majority of sales are always at 1080p. So for me, I would say that it isn't worth creating your own downsized clips.

Thanks for your replies.

Yes, I'm afraid the work it takes to downsize each video may become huge. Plus it will clutter the search results with similar videos, and instead of each sale counting to the total of sales of a specific video it will be scattered among the versions.

Not to mention the buyer may only see a small version and not realizing that other sizes of the same video are available unless we mention it on the description and the buyers actually reads it.

I don't understand why doesn't P5 automatically downsize the videos as other agencies. As I said, I'm having sales of smaller sizes at other agencies, earning a smaller commission than the 50% P5 offers and feeling that both us and P5 come up losing from something so obvious to be offered by an agency...

Lower resolution should be the native resolution,or hd for anything higher than that.

I am getting sd and sometimes web resolution downloads at ss,but to be honest everytime this happens i wish i wouldn't sell at all.
