Title: Poll Results: Is Pond5 really better than Bigstock, Canstock and Envato?
Post by: cidepix on November 07, 2013, 11:59
I am not on pond5 and would be happy if contributors who are on all those 4 sites provide some insight about it?

Is pond5 a legit middle tier site that consistently does better than those aforementioned sites?

if better, then how much better?

if not, then is it actually closer to low earners? or is it about the same?

EDIT: Ron made a very good point.. Please compare them for photos and vector sales..

Is pond5 really selling more images than those other sites? please exclude video!

Video sales will bring them up. I think P5 for photos stinks.  :)

I think that the poll results should be divided in different categories: photo, vector, video, audio, etc. it could be more reliable.

In terms of image sales aforementioned sites are performing far better than P5, in my case.

There probably wouldn't be enough votes for vector or video unless it was set below 50. It would be interesting to see though.

I recently joined Pond5 and don't have any sales yet. My portfolio is kind of small because of them not having IPTC. I would say they aren't comparable so far, but I'll see how it goes.

Only 7 days into this month, but it's already doing better than fotolia and dreamstime, so let's not talk about bigstock (totally dead for me) and the rest. :)
This is with photos by themselves, if I add video, then it's doing even better. But let's stick to photos.

However, this is my first month with my full portfolio there, so I'm not sure if it's representative. Higher royalty and prices (which you can set as you wish) means that one sale at p5 is worth a couple of sales somewhere else (for me). They have a really simple upload procedure (batching, no categories), so try it out. It might be a waste of your time, and it can be worthwhile. I like where it's headed for my content.

For me (small port, basically photos only, many travel and editorial shots) Pond5 is doing better than Photodune (which for some reason hasn't sold any of my photos in a month now), Canstock (basically dead) and Bigstock ($.25 subs only lately, will likely drop at the end of the year).

I also tend to price my images a bit higher than the norm there (mostly $29.99), so RPD is very nice (between $5 and $15).

pond5 is consistently my 3rd or 4th best agency.  about 1/2 my income from them is photos (and that ratio is changing to more photos, fewer videos)  -- I price my images at $9, and a few sales there a month easily beat photodune,123,big,istock,yay,foto,and all the other bottom dwellers

their submission process is easy and their curators (reviewers) are helpful and fast to respond

biggest problem with photodune, 123,big etc (besides the lack of actual sales) is that their prices are so low that money just dribbles into an account

another nice feature is that pond pays EVERY month

Thanks for the useful info guys..

I still won't upload anything until they implement IPTC extraction to vector upload process..

Happy to see that for some of you P5 sells more images than those other sites..

You may try CSV import/edit feature. If you have data in ExcelSheet it might be an easy solution how to send all files to curators in an hour. IPTC is in pipeline, I'll push it a bit for you...

Thanks for the update zager!

I will wait for IPTC as I don't have data in ExcelSheet..

Many of us are looking forward to hear good news about this issue..

I have half-a-dozen videos on P5 so I don't have a large income from them. I have although uploaded almost all my edit: RF photos and I can say it sells very, very little.

In fact if it wasn't for the occasional video sale it would be very difficult to reach payouts even if they are only 25usd.

If I make an average between 123rf, BS, VM, DP and StockXpert/TS, the money I've earned in P5 this year is about 20% of that average. So it's extremely poor.

Only StockFresh is worse but I have there only a small portion of my portfolio.

It's a pity because I wanted them to succeed.

On my incomes, Pond5 is 19. it's there somewhere on bottom. I have only images everywhere.
