Title: Sales have crashed on P5 - what am I doing wrong?
Post by: Contemporary Dave on May 04, 2022, 06:48
I joined P5 about 18 months ago, and despite having a very small portfolio, I was getting sales - about one every 10 days, which I was generally happy about. However, over the last year, despite adding hundreds more clips, sales have fallen through the floor, to the extent that I'm lucky to get a download once every 4 months. I'm not selling them at ridiculously high prices - typically $79 for HD and $120 for 4K.

Whilst sales have crashed on Pond5, the same video clips put on other stock sites like Shutterstock have increased very nicely, so I know there is a demand for some of the content I'm shooting.

So where do you think I might be going wrong? Or is it just the stuff I shoot doesn't appeal to people who use P5?

Your stuff is very solid, well shot and well composed.  If anything, I'd say maybe think about more "concept" or "off the wall" shots.  Maybe think of some COVID themes, since that's heavy in the news lately.

And my American-bias might be showing, but something else that may be hindering you is your shots are very "European."  Not your fault obviously, and I don't even know if that's a problem, but maybe try to compose your shots in such a way to not make it so location-specific.

People using technology, "cutting the cord", general lifestyle, silly shots -- these are some topics I don't really see in your portfolio.

@Dave:
I can only speak for myself here, but Pond5 has slumped to near zero for me in the last 6 months, at about 2,000 videos and my videos are not as good quality as yours :-)
In mid 2021 the performance was Ok and in 2022 (January to April) it was only 4 video sales for $20.12.

By the way, ShutterStock is looking just as dismal with videos, but AdobeStock has picked up slightly with videos and IStock is much better than mid 2021.

Well yea, Pond5 is far from what it was 5+ years ago. I have 17k+ video footage and its a disgrace of sales...
or my files aren't good enough for the buyers https://www.pond5.com/artist/video_stockorg?tab=footage (https://www.pond5.com/artist/video_stockorg?tab=footage)

Hi,
For my perspective P5 is doing ok for me.
If sales went down it probably has to do with a number of factors but for sure is not the quality of your work.

Pond5 hit 30 million clips and 100.000 contributors. Trends are always changing and algorithms revised too. Also if you sell your clips in other microstock sites for less this can be a factor too.

Perhaps diversifying your database or betting on a niche in a lot quantity can help you get more sales.

All the best for your sales!
