Quite an alarming thing occurred on P5 recently. I submitted a news related video which features large numbers of people and a marine vessel as editorial. I then asked P5 Support to transfer the video from my non exclusive account to my exclusive account. When I checked, I saw that the transfer was complete but I also noticed that the video had also been changed from editorial to commercial for some strange reason. This is really puzzling considering the number of recognisable people in the footage. And the design of the vessel may be protected by copyright as well. There are also flags on the vessel as well featuring graphic elements (which could present potential issues.)

I contacted P5 and asked them to change the video back to editorial.

Has this occurred to anyone else - P5 changing an editorial video to commercial without your consent or knowledge?

While I haven't noticed this myself, not to say it hasn't happened.

In this instance it could of just been an oversight by the reviewer as they probably make mistakes on occasion.

The reviewer would have accepted it as editorial initially when it was first submitted. The change from editorial to commercial seems to have taken place when the video was transferred from my non exclusive account to my exclusive account.

I've noticed that in the past when I upload new clips to my P5 account the default is set to Commercial.

Making it Editorial is done when Editing a new clip to add title, desc, tags, etc. and also checking the Editorial box.

I'm guessing when your clip was moved to your other account the default was applied just like a newly uploaded clip. So it was not likely an intentional change or nefarious action by P5.

Yep, I certainly did check the Editorial box. I just assumed that it would remain editorial when it's transferred between accounts.

Ive just checked my other editorial videos that were moved from my non exclusive account to my exclusive account well over a year ago. They all remained editorial. So yea - none of those clips were changed to commercial.

The odd thing about this latest clip is that when I go into edit mode, it indicates that it's editorial. Though when I search for it like a client does and click on it, it says that it's for commercial usage.

Yes, pond5 can convert your commercial video to editorial at any time. It's probably possible the other way around too. You won't know until you accidentally see your video. They have people who constantly check their database.

If I recall correctly it was sometime during the last year that P5 added the Editorial check box for us to mark along with the Editorial caption requirement.   I'd suspect that change in their s/w is a little buggy when it comes to dealing with a clip being moved into the account manually and may not be carrying over an Editorial marking.

Ah interesting theory. I guess that is a possibility.

The good news is that this news related footage has been changed back to editorial. So all good now.
