Title: What's up with Pond5
Post by: dingles on August 25, 2013, 20:09
So I recently added many images to the t
Op sites to the right. They are all doing well on every site but Pond5... Any ideas why? My pricing is in range of most images of the same caliber...but no sales and zero views on my top performers even...am I missing something?

No, you are not missing something. I could be wrong but since you experience is similar to mine I came to the conclusion they just don't have the audience yet.
I do sell a few but it's just a small drop in the bucket compared to other sites.

They are first and foremost a video site.  It doesn't take too many video guys getting a couple hundred dollars a month to move them up the rankings.

Good point.

I have 1514 images on P5 and 1 sale since I started there early this summer. Doesn't look like it will ever be a winner for me, and I probably won't upload any more there.

I have sold one photo in 7 months on Pond5 for the price (my earning) of $ 6.65.
It has been a (nice) surprise.
I think that their customers are more interested by video footage.

I started upload to Pond few months ago. For instance only 20% of my portfolio is here.
I have only few sales per month but they are slowly increasing. They are doing better than Alamy for me. Strange thing: the majority of my downloads are editorial.
I set all my prices under iStock prices (main collection). I try to send buyers here and sink iStock ;-). Even with lower prices I get much better commissions than with others microstock sites.
For video they are the best but for photo we should be patient...

I think they stand a chance selling images, as they've done such a good job selling video clips.  They will need time though.  Might as well upload and forget about the sales for now.  Some of my video clips took a year or more to sell, perhaps that will happen with stills?  It was hard for some of the microstock sites to start selling video clips, Shutterstock seems to of picked up sales in recent months.  It will be even harder for Pond5 to sell stills, as they've started later.  I still think its worth giving them a go though.  People that have a small portfolio that don't get regular payouts from the big sites will be wasting their time but with 50% commission and setting your own prices, it should be possible to get a payout with much less sales than many of the lower selling sites.

Thanks for the replies all.

I always known them as a video site as well, but in these forums I have seen folks list them as with their top earners, I guess I assumed they were doing better with images. All in all I didn't know what to expect...other sites I had little hope for surprised me and Pond5 just fell short of the others so far (as far as sales). looks like the potential is there.
