Title: Crated - Share Links to your gallery and support each others work
Post by: wordplanet on May 06, 2014, 16:18
Thought that we could share links to our new Crated Galleries here and get some likes on the work.

I'm still experimenting with pricing options so they are consistent with other outlets which is going to take time to tweak so I'm not sharing on FB or twitter yet but thought we could share our links here in the forum and add those hearts to the work we like.

Here's my new featured gallery - missed the ITPC update so I only have 5 online so far but plan to add more as time allows once I get the pricing nailed down.

https://www.crated.com/mariannecampolongo (https://www.crated.com/mariannecampolongo)

If you like my work, I'd appreciate a heart and am happy to return the favor.

Looking forward to seeing people's work

Hi,

I am trying them out as well. I did upload a couple this evening and it was reading IPTC now. It will be interesting to see how Crated does.

I decided to upload a few (30) and see what happens. The IPTC read doesn't grab the titles, only keywords and description (I sent them feedback)

Wonderful galleries! When you uploaded your work, did you upsized images by yourself to reach "extra large" print size over 100 cm (40") or it is done by system?

Thanks,

Kalevi

You guys all realize that unless you've been 'accepted' by curation - and notified of that by email - your photos don't show up in search, right?   Did you all get that notification?

I have not, so i'm not uploading anything more for now.

I did get an e-mail saying my gallery would be featured. I uploaded 30 images up front so they'd see a decent representation (and I hoped so they'd like and thus promote my gallery).

And regarding upsizing, I haven't change the size of anything, and I hope they're not upsizing anything.

I only uploaded images about a day ago. For those of you who received the email that you were included in search…how long did it take after you uploaded images? I don’t know if I should upload more/different images or just keep waiting.

Uploaded late last night and received e-mail this morning. These things could be handled in batches, so I might just have made it into the tail end of a time slot by sheer chance - IOW it could have been a weekly reply and I just happened to catch the right day by accident :)

Following all of you now - thanks to those following me - I've "collected" some of your work too and left some comments. Hoping everyone can hit "follow" too. Thanks for the comments & hearts.

It's great to see everyone's art - very different than much of your stock work - lots of talent in this group as I'd expect.  8)

Keeping my fingers crossed this site takes off. Hope to add a bunch more work soon.

Based on them viewing my port on my website, I got an invite to join, but haven't gotten the email saying I have been curated, so I won't be uploading further either. So far it's been a pain. Any site that doesn't put the work in up front to grab IPTC data doesn't deserve any images.

Correct. The site is still in Beta and not live yet. So only if you are accepted into the Beta program and have a login will you see the galleries right now.

Yesterday titles were still not red, but today, they are reading all fields correctly (at least on the 10 images I uploaded this morning)

Yes, you have to be logged in to see someone's port, so using the 'marketing tools' is useless right now. I'm not going to waste people's time sending them a link to a port that they can't see.

ana, you have some very cool things in your gallery. One suggestion, in case you didn't already know this: you can make small adjustments in the order of things in your gallery (I say small because the interface is seriously clunky and not really usable for more than a few spots up or down).

When I looked at the first few rows of images, it was hard to see where one ended and the next began because several rather similar ones were adjacent. If you changed the order a little I think it might make a more appealing display for the viewer.

If you go to Dashboard and then My Art you can see the rearrange tool top right.

Not sure what it will mean (as I'm too far away to go and check it out in person!) but they sent e-mail today saying one of my photos was selected for their opening pop-up gallery in NYC tonight and tomorrow!

https://twitter.com/joannsnover/status/468780521603231744

I had to ask which picture as the e-mail didn't say, but support kindly found out so I could help them promote the opening.

The site looks very inviting - let's hope some sales follow :)

I had one chosen as well. It would have been nice to know which image in the notification. Support responded fairly quickly with which image it was though.

I was thinking the same thing, not sure what it means and how many will be digitally displayed. I am assuming they will be running through multiple images for each digital display. Not sure how popular the SOHO Arthouse is but it is still an exciting.

Oh, and congrats

I've got the one and only image I have at Crated in the SOHO show: https://twitter.com/emberstudio/status/468839709980897282 (https://twitter.com/emberstudio/status/468839709980897282)

Honestly it's not anything special of an image, more of a colored sketch. But I guess this sort of qualifies as my first gallery appearance so I'll take it, even if it is just a digital display showing.

Edited to add: Saw this on the crated Instagram account: http://instagram.com/p/oOmVMdrE18/ (http://instagram.com/p/oOmVMdrE18/) Looks like those displays in the background are probably where they'll be showing our stuff.

And the @CratedNYC twitter account is posting gallery photos. Anyone's work visible in the photos?

I decided to jump in and uploaded a dozen images to Crated. Not sure if I'll get "the email" or not. We'll see. Here's my page... https://crated.com/marthamarks

I'm not happy about the lack of a watermark on the images, so I added a copyright notice to each description, which may not make much difference. Makes me feel better though.

I'm also not pleased that the site makes it easy to post the non-watermarked image on Pinterest, which I'm blocking on my own Symbiostock site. That fact alone may well lead me to take my images down. Are others concerned about this?

I've got 15 images in my gallery, enough of a cross-section of what I do for them to determine whether or not I'm worthy of being 'curated'....although I guess we never really know, do we?  If not, then I'll use it as a place to upload an image and refer a client should I ever get a request for a print.

Checked what sizes are sold after you upload - currently there's no way to replace an image, although it is a feature being looked into.  Some of my images start "small" at 32" x 23"...

My dozen test images have been up on Crated for several days now.

https://crated.com/marthamarks

However, I still haven't received that elusive email. Maybe they're suddenly swamped with new contributors, or maybe they're all partying at the Grand Opening show.

But I'm curious to know: have any other "newbies" heard back from the curators, apart from those early ones who got their now-famous emails overnight and promptly wound up in the show?

They like the coast maybe? ;)  Mine was of an egret feeding in shallow water https://twitter.com/SilkenPhotos/status/469632819141304320.

Yure: Crated's rep earlier in the thread suggested 15-20 images for curation (off the top of my head, certainly more than 5).

That's true, and I'd forgotten it. Thanks for the reminder. I need to add a few more images, and I will.

Very nice egret shot, BTW!

I'm a bit confused...
I uploaded several images a few days ago and soon received an email saying that my work has been promoted as a featured gallery and that my images will appear in the search. But as I understand this is not what Crated calls "curation", right? Would the review for curation be the next step?

Thanks Shelma1. Probably I'm messing up something, but I thought curated images will show up in the search when clicked on the "curated" label (on the left of the page, next to "recent"). My images don't show up there, instead only in the standard search, thus I understood that they weren't curated..  ???

I've just noticed that images in galleries are shown without any watermark. They can be downloaded by just using the mouse right button so you can get a free image sized as much as 512x349. This is a nice blog size for free  :(

I'm worried about that too, as I mentioned in a previous post. To try to counter the omission, I've posted my © notice on my home page and on each photo page. Of course, that won't stop many image thieves.

Two questions:

Are peresanz and I the only contributors concerned about this?

Could the Crated rep get back to us with an explanation for why there is no watermark protection?

I'm thinking I'll leave my 20 images up on Crated through this week, to the end of May.

By then, if the site managers are still incommunicado and haven't sent me the mysterious "You're curated!" email (or any sort of response at all), and if my images are still just sitting there unprotected by watermarks, I'll probably take 'em down.

It's a shame, because I do like some aspects of this site, but those two problematic issues really aren't sitting well with me.

Yes, that's the most troublesome thing about it. Otherwise, I could be patient with a delay, given that it's a start-up operation that just had its grand opening party.

Maybe some others here will begin getting those "curated in" emails and will share the news with the rest of us. However, as long as we continue to hear nothing, we may begin to assume the "curation" has in fact happened and we just didn't make the cut.

No news does not appear to be good news in this curious little game.

I received this email today:

"We really like your art and you've been promoted as a featured gallery on Crated!

Your work will now appear in search results and will be cycled within our 'Discover art' page.

Congrats. Let's sell some art!"

Not sure if this is the famous "curated in" email, but now my images can be searched.

BTW, I opened a support ticket regarding the issue with the fact that images can be easily downloaded from contributor galleries by means of the mouse right button and have been told that they are working on a solution for this. I will come back with the progress...

So, it seems there are 3 levels for images: not featured, promoted and curated

Mine either.  I suspect that if we're not in the curated section it won't be worth a wooden nickel to contribute since your images need to be "curated" to be "accepted", at least that's how I understood their acceptance policy.
Title: Re: Crated - Share Links to your gallery and support each others work
Post by: Yure on May 27, 2014, 08:22
I'm more optimistic. From a buyer's point of view, I think, 8 pages only of "curated" images give no many choices. If someone is searching for, i.e. "ship in the windstorm", he finds nothing in curated, while in the wider searchable database he can find three wonderful, state-of-the-art, inimitable images.  ;D
Not to mention a "salty dog" search: astounding results in the normal galleries, nothing in curated  8)

Sure would be nice if Crated would explain all these ins-and-outs to potential contributors, either on site or via a courtesy email when we first submit images for consideration.

Instead, we're expected to wait an unspecified period of time (weeks ?) in eager anticipation of an email that may or may not ever come, all the while exposing some of our best images to easy theft.

My enthusiasm for this site is decreasing by the day.

I got a message from them today- my work is now searchable.  (same message as Peresanz)

I uploaded 15 originally, it took 6 days.

I would like a bit of watermark, and it would be nice if they outlined the process somewhere so we know what the terms mean and how and when they happen.

Now lets see some sales.

Hi Ariene,

go to: https://crated.com/account/pricing. There you can set (increase or decrease) your prices for entire portfolio (this effects only for new uploads).

or

go to: https://crated.com/account > select “My Art” > Select image for edit > image details open > below is “Set your products and pricing for this piece” > there you can increase or decrease your prices for every image individually.

Enjoy,

Kalevi

P.S. there are not final prices but you can set Markup (%).

We provide you with wholesale pricing that you can markup by up to 300%. That markup is your profit and you keep 80%. It's really that simple.

You have to wait to see if you get that "curated" e-mail to find out rather you will be in the search results? I've got 8 sitting in my gallery but none show up in the search. It sounds like if you're not curated in that those photos just sit there. I just uploaded them last week, don't remember the exact date.

Am I correct in my thinking?

That was the point of my last post on the subject a few lines up. I've got 20 images on Crated now, all of which are selling on stock sites but also (thanks to Crated) very easy for somebody to steal in blog size. Most of them have been there 2 weeks. I still haven't heard anything back from Crated, so I don't know if my images failed to pass muster or if I just haven't cooled my heels long enough to make it through their vague "curation" process.

If other people are getting acceptance notices after a similar time period, then it might be worth waiting. But if nobody is getting "curated" there any more, then it seems to make sense to take my gallery down.

Rather hard to know how to deal with a company that doesn't give you decent feedback.

I guess if they are still hanging in the wind in a month, I'll just take them down. I know I won't upload any more til I find out. It wouldn't be worth my time to work on uploading photos if they can't be found in a search. I know the ones I uploaded do sell, but if I'm going to give someone 20% and have to do all the work searching out customers, it isn't worth it. If I wanted to do that I'd have my own site.

I have e-mailed support to how many they want. Hopefully it won't take to long to get an answer. I could find no information about the requirements on their site or even being "crated" in order to be in the search engine. They really need to be clearer as to what they do so contributors know before hand.

They seem to love beaches and foxes, based on what folks have said about the work chosen to be shown at their gallery opening.  ;)

Just curious...those of you who got "crated"...how many uploads did you have initially before you were approved? It'll give me an idea rather I have enough already uploaded to know rather there is enough. I know someone said they thought it was 15 to 20.

I uploaded 20 and got 'crated' the next day...

Thanks...I only had 8 on there which I uploaded last week and I'm going to upload 20 more to see what happens.

Maybe if you havn't gotten the email you were somehow lost in the shuffle? If it were me I'd close my account and then open a new one...and upload photos of beaches and foxes. They seem to love beaches and foxes, based on what folks have said about the work chosen to be shown at their gallery opening.  ;)
I had a piece chosen to be shown at the opening but have no idea what it was ...

They really need to be clearer as to what they do so contributors know before hand.
Seems to be a trend.

Hmmm. So most everybody here has gotten that email?

Is there nobody (other than me) who uploaded images but hasn't gotten it?

uploaded 20 images - received no email

Like many people I assumed that when I was initially granted an account, that meant I was "accepted" - after all, I'd given them the portfolio link they asked for.  I then uploaded about 20 photos that were a cross-section of things I thought might sell as wall art, based on my FAA experience.

Much later, I realized I wasn't showing up in search, so I emailed support.  Eventually I was told that the 'curator' thought some of my images were too "stocky". The support guy suggested that I change my mix and add more "artistic" stuff.    No other information - i.e. which ones the curator(s) liked, which they didn't, or why, or when I might get a second look, etc.

I deleted all my stuff and forgot about Crated.  If they ever announce a clear and well defined acceptance procedure, I might try again.  But not this weird guessing game.

I'm wondering what happens if you do get 'curated' with an initial submission, but then upload "stocky" things later.   Would they un-curate you?

I didn't know they needed a link to a portfolio. I put no link on there. Did everyone else put a link to their portfolio? Which do you do? Your stock sites or Fine Art America their competitor? Stock sites wouldn't have an artistic portfoilio.

When I initially applied for an account, the form asked for a portfolio link.  I have my own personal web site that has just my best - and hopefully most artistic - stuff, so I gave them that URL.   I don't think they ever looked at it.  They're now saying the initial approval was just to participate in the beta, not to be featured (i.e. appear in search) on the site.

Who knows.

Title: I've pulled out of Crated
Post by: marthamarks on June 04, 2014, 23:03
I followed through this week with what I decided last week. My account and small "test" portfolio are now deleted from Crated. Here's my slightly edited (for length) correspondence with Steve Clost, who was very courteous and helpful. Maybe this will help illuminate Crated's policies for others.

Quote
Steve, I really like what Crated is doing and am proud of how my 20-image portfolio looks on your website. However, several weeks after I established an account and put those images up, I've heard nothing back from you.

Having had no communication from you, I must assume that my images have failed to be “curated” into your collection. As they are neither “searchable” nor watermarked (and thus vulnerable to theft by bloggers), it seems best to take them down.

Please advise me when you have removed my images and deleted my account. Thanks. Martha Marks

Quote
Martha, when we delete your account the email associated with it will become blocked in our system. You would have to use an alternate email to create another account with us.

Since deleting your account is such a final process, we do recommend an alternative of simply deleting or deactivating the images on your account using the edit feature under the 'My Art' tab in your dashboard. Again I do apologize for the lack of communication on our part, we are looking into ways to improve in this area in the future! Steve

Quote
Steve, I may want to come back to Crated some day, so I appreciate your directions and will follow them.

Actually, I’d be very happy to keep my portfolio up on Crated now, and even add to it, if only I could hear that the images had been “curated” and were searchable. The lack of communication from Crated about that issue is very unnerving, given that my images are ripe for theft on the site at the same time that it gives me almost no value for being there.

I'm glad that you want to continue updating your portfolio. Our curation process is very fluid, as you upload more pieces that may catch their eye they may view your gallery again. We do appreciate the feedback regarding copyright, we are reviewing if we will offer a site watermark for customers although it is not in the immediate future. At the time we've disabled right clicking and dragging once viewing an image at a resolution that we would like to protect. I will pass along the feedback to our team!

Quote
Steve, your answer of having a “fluid” curation process isn’t at all satisfactory. Sounds like you expect an artist to upload and upload till the cows come home, hoping for some ill-defined, magical something-or-other that might (or might not) catch some mysterious curator’s eye and entice him or her to check a portfolio again and say “Voila! These images are fabulous!! I think I’ll curate this portfolio now!!!”

I can’t imagine that kind of “fluidity" is going to appeal to busy people who have better things to do than continuously upload in hopes of a response of some sort, which may never come. A simple statement like “Sorry, your images are not what we’re seeking at this time” would be better.

And for sure, without some way to watermark images on your site, I’m not going to add more for the convenience of blog thieves.

I could deactivate my images now, as you suggest, but if I did that, I can’t imagine myself going back to add any more images to my deactivated portfolio, knowing how the process works. I may as well delete the whole account and be done with it.

So, yes, please go ahead and delete my account now.

Quote
Hey Martha, I am sorry that you feel this way. We are still working on ways to be more clear about this to our users and always listen to feedback on how to improve!

I've passed along your request to our development team and your account should be deleted within the next two days.

Quote
Great. Thanks!

Just updating you that the account should now be deleted! Steve

Same here.
"I noticed that some of your images are leaning more towards the stock photography category ... and others are more landscape and nature. I would recommend limiting your gallery to only the most artistic shots."

and they are not specially interested in coming here for some time:
"since Crated is now live and we have a support, faq, and forum here on our site, it's difficult to split our time across outside sites discussing Crated. "

I deleted all my stuff and forgot about Crated.  If they ever announce a clear and well defined acceptance procedure, I might try again.  But not this weird guessing game.

Yeah, they are weird. They welcome us but never give 100 % informations (or even 50%). It doesn't look to professional and it's new company. Bad start.

Thanks Martha for all informations, very appreciate!
Looks like they are just not ready for this business.
Three days ago I wrote email to them asking what I'm standing on, what should I do - upload more images, wait or what...
"I'll make sure that our curators take a look at your gallery asap and will let you know either way."
It was 3 days ago. I feel befooled.

This is not pro, this is discouraging and I know now it won't work for me. I'm not a child with all days free to make and only upload images just to show them to the world. I have few more authorial sites and not interested in another one. So dear Crated, thank you for trying, but looks like it was short trip. I don't see any sense of uploading even one image more here. One big waste of time. You don't treat us seriously at all.

Good luck!

My guess is: Yes. If you slip and upload stocky stuff (as opposed to artsy-fartsy stuff), you'll likely be un-curated in an eyeblink.

Or… maybe not. Who knows?

it makes me question the curator's artistic eye and marketing intuition. i am not impressed with what they are featuring as fine art -- that people would want to have framed and placed on their walls.

i was hoping to get a sense of what they were seeking... perhaps i have

They will have to start approving or rejecting individual images - there's no other way 'curation' can make sense.   I don't think they can rely on approving an 'artist' and then trusting him to continue to upload only things they like.

Here's the e-mail I sent them

"I've been on here awhile and I was wondering if I was lacking something. Could you let me know if there is something I did wrong or has it not been long enough. "

Here is their response

" Unfortunately with the amount of requests and emails we get on a daily basis, our curators are not able to give specific feedback or explanation on promoted/unpromoted galleries.

I would personally recommend searching our 'curated' art (https://crated.com/search) for similar tags to your those on your art to see examples of art that has been approved and promoted.

I hope this helps clarify a bit, I'm sorry I couldn't offer more input. I'm here if you have any other questions though!"

Well that wasn't much of an answer. Some of the ones I uploaded sell on Fine Art America so I think they are "artsy" not stock. I agree with you Oxman, some of the approved ones I question why they picked them, unless I don't live in the modern age...

I guess I still don't get it. Is there ONE KIND OF ACCEPTANCE or TIERED ACCEPTANCE? Super duper ones are "curated" and the rest of the accepted ones are in the general collection? And if true how are the weights of the super duper engineered into the search? Or does super duper=all accepted are curated, and therefore super duper?

There are two tiers. When you do a search....at the left there is a "New" and "Curated" link. I don't know if the curated ones are also included in the new search button, but my guess is they are. If you haven't gotten that "crated" or "curated" e-mail your port won't show up in the search.

I don't know if the curated images are by artist or just that image.

No sales either - but my images are not very long up.
Along with 'Newest' and 'Curated' we now have 'Upcoming'

I'm not sure what 'Upcoming' actually means. Anybody have any ideas.
From what I think, when you click on 'Discover' these are works that have sold.
Am I right on this?

I thought Discover was being able to look at their whole collection without a search. I haven't a clue what Upcoming is. Them seem to keep their contributors in the dark.

Honestly...if they can't respond to their contributors or give us any feed back I really don't know how well they will do as a whole.

Donding, do you think we should start a Thread here 'Clarify Crated' where all questions could possibly be answered in one place by their support team.
It's frustrating to say the least for those submitting when they don't know exactly the workings of the site are. I feel it is in their own interest to address this pretty quickly by putting things down in black and white!

I think they really don't want people who have one foot in stock - they want 'artists'.  It seems like the few of us who got some sort of explanation for rejection were told that some of our stuff was too 'stocky'.   So they may not want to participate in this forum at all.

Happy to hear sales happen on Crater!  I removed my 20 images yesterday, though. I felt so  uncomfortable with the fact that my images could be so easily downloaded without watermark that I decided to stop adding more images and finally removed the existing ones from Crated. I contacted support regarding the no-watermark problem and I got evasive responses. If communication by their part improves in the future I would consider uploading again.

I just went to my gallery since I only have five photos there right now and had an online chat re: what it means to be "curated: so I could decide whether or not to upload some more. Here's the relevant portion of the conversation:

Crated:
... your Gallery itself has been Promoted (which some users call Curated) and shows up in the 'All' Search which is definitely used the most on our site. We don't necessarily need to see more of your gallery. The 'Curated' search isn't for galleries as a whole, just specific images that have been chosen to display on the front of Crated.com

Our curators do select images from old galleries or new uploads to place on the front page. There's no real way of better getting selected there.

I hope that helps clarify! Just let me know if you want me to expand on either thought there.
That's why when you search "Fish" only two images show up under Curated, we've only had two images containing that tag, whereas many Promoted / Curated galleries would display Fish.

Me:
How often do you change the front page? Do we get notified if one of our images makes it to the front page?

Crated:
You will get notified if an image is chosen for our front page! Uploading more may help with this goal if of the same caliber of work too. I'm not sure how often it rotates as they don't have a schedule but I know over 3 days over half the page has updated.

My conclusion:
It looks like it is in fact a tiered system as my photos show up in regular searches, thus my gallery has been promoted. The photos that show up on the front page are specially curated, so it would make sense to upload more as a front page photo should have more potential to sell.

Going back there now to make sure I follow everyone who's followed me since the last time I checked in there a few weeks back. No sales yet (with 5 photos not really expected) but appreciate the follows :)

I just don't get it. My work is not in the search. I put up about 6 bird images after i was initially accepted way back when i got an invitation to join and applied and was accepted. i got 2 emails n June that refer to me as a crated artists. Yet nothing shows up in the searches. My work is as good or better than what is there. I sell regular on FAA. I have gorgeous photos of Roseate Spoonbills but the search turns up only one other. One of the brown pelican photos they have up is overexposed. Mine are perfect.  I would start uploading in earnest but if i will not be in the search i wont bother. And why do they refer to me as an early crated artist? Glad I found this thread.

I am still mystified or more so now.

Go to Dashboard then pricing. You have to mark up rather high to match your price on other POD sites. To me that's good because that meant my cut will be much higher if my work sold via crated.

Thanks for the congrats. Great that they put one of yours on the home page Mike (mine never have been, BTW, so the image must have been found via search) - in general, that type of up front exposure can't be bad.

I understand about the watermark issue, but I'm living with FAA's almost useless watermark already and there's always a theft risk from all the sites that legitimately use my purchased images, so I've decided that I'm not making the lack of a watermark a no-go criterion, at leasst for now.

For those of you on FAA, I've noticed a lot of what appears to be trawling through my portfolio (over days and weeks) from what appears to be a single location. I worry that someone's lifting all the watermarked previews from there as I can't figure out why there'd be so many crawlers.

For Crated's search, I get some very odd results on some searches, and checking to see if it's keyword spam, it appears to be that they search descriptions. So one description of a shot of Bear Lake in Idaho says that it has been called the "Caribbean of the Rockies" and so the image shows up in a search for Caribbean. Given how awful some people's keywords are (lack of keywords, I assume from contributors who aren't selling stock) I guess they figured this would help.

Congrats on the front page feature Mike!
I think I agree with Jo Ann re the watermark issue and plan to upload some new stuff soon. I figure being in on the ground floor is a good thing and if people are selling already that's a good sign.

If they ever announce a clear, rational system for submitting images and getting them 'accepted' (meaning they show up in search) then I'll take another look.

Not interested in the guessing game they're playing now.

Jo Ann, is that trawling coming from Provo, UT?  I've been getting many hits from there, and so has my husband (who has his own fine art paintings on FAA).

Not for me. St. Petersburg, Russian Federation and Sunnyvale, CA. Any new uploads are visited by Kiez - Germany, but I haven't uploaded in a few months, so mostly this is just visits to existing stuff.

I've had huge increases in the past week from New York; also Palo Alto, Ca (apparently Facebook, but I don't know why that would be - hotlinking?) and Germany (not Kiez this time) today in particular. I also have one file which has many more views than the next highest, from a huge range of locations, but no sales; yet GIS doesn't reveal any thefts.

Another question, I got a notice that someone collected one of my artworks. What does it mean? Does it mean that the image has been put into that person's "lightbox" or "favorites"?

It's similar to favorites. When  you look at someone else's work - and are logged in - you can click on the heart on the top right to collect it. On your gallery (profile) page you'll see a tab for Collection nnn (with whatever number of items you've collected).

You can also follow people - I think you get a notice when they upload new stuff versus not if you just collect works by artists

I went to the site using my ipad for the first time and did some searches and they were empty ot had only one image. i saw that by default I was searching the curated collection which apparently i am not in. It would seem to me if the default search shows no results the search itself will be useless and will actually lose and visitors that mange to find the site. On my desktop it shows 'all" the images as the default search. I did notice that my work is in the collection called "upcoming" which is right under "curated". Well that makes me feel a little better but does not change the fact that there is not enough content in the default search to keep visitors engaged long enough to see there are other options besides "curated'. I know they are trying to put e best up front but they are making the store look empty.

Zip.  But, I don't have many images there.  I was 'crated' so my images are searchable.  It's still very early; I imagine if Crated is going to be successful it will take awhile.

Did this company ever start making sense with regard to 'curation' and search visibility?

I was allowed into the beta, then wasted a bunch of time creating a gallery before realizing I wasn't one of The Chosen, i.e. I wouldn't show up in search results.  So I deleted everything.

It seems like nothing is happening there.  I see the same 'featured artists' as I did when the site first went live, months ago.

If there was some clearly defined procedure for submitting a portfolio and being accepted or rejected, I could get interested.   But who wants a gallery with a Search bar at the top that only pulls up other people's stuff?

is this similar to 500px?  r either of these worth joining, bcos on the other thread on 500px there was mention of the same thing ie not found on search.  if so, what would be the point of uploading there? just to get the other "favorites" more exposure with your own port.
pls share ur experience (or displeasure), so it can save me the trouble if it is (displeasurable). much appreciated.

Don't get me wrong - I'm all for 'curation' if it means accepting good stuff and not a lot of repetitious junk.   But with Crated, you can't find out what they're looking for - it's some weird guessing game.

Actually, if they want to restrict their promotion and search results to accepted 'artists', that's ok too - just remove the Search box, and other Crated doo-dads, from the top of my gallery.

Yesterday I uploaded about 150 pics and got the "We really like your art and you've been promoted as a featured gallery on Crated!" email.

All of my work is available to buy but not all of it is available in the search. Maybe it takes a while but I'm getting the idea there are three tiers. You get in with the approved email, then they pick which stuff shows up in the search, and from those they pick which stuff shows up in the "Curated" area.

Anybody else seeing this or is all of your work showing up in the search?

I recently got 'in' at Crated - well at least they accepted me into the search - but I'm not seeing many signs of life.  The site hasn't really changed for something like a year - same 'featured' artists in 'community', main page hasn't changed. No new live gallery events since that one in 2014.  Last blog post Oct 16th, a trickle on FB.    The search results seem very incomplete and inconsistent.

I'm uploading photos but without much enthusiasm.

I won't post my link here because I want to remain anonymous on MSG.  Too bad there's no forum on Crated.

I've had one sale so far, it was a while ago. I sell a lot more on FAA and redbubble. The site is still relatively new and their shipping fees are reasonable so hopefully they will gain some traction. I have a few friends who've had sales recently so there's still life there.

Old thread alert - but to answer the recent question:

I've had work "curated" and a landscape gallery featured via their twitter feed @getcrated earlier in the summer. The most recently curated image just sold as a nice large print. Slow going there, but it's picking up. I think they just hit the two-year mark in May, so that's probably not bad. They have the best customer service of any of the POD sites I've dealt with - you can do a chat on the site and they actually read and understand what you've written and give you a workable answer.

With 343 images, I've had two large framed print sales to date, far fewer than FAA (539 images - 44 Sales) and redbubble (80 images - 116 Sales), one more than P4Me (>20 images - 1 sale). I get the most sales on redbubble, but the highest value sales on FAA.

As I said in my OP about 2 years ago LOL, happy to like your work and follow back.https://crated.com/mariannecampolongo/galleries (https://crated.com/mariannecampolongo/galleries)

Yes I deliberately awakened this old thread - seemed appropriate.   I've actually sold 1 print at Crated and if others are selling, great.  But I've noticed that 'curation' doesn't mean much anymore because all sorts of lousy, repetitious - and possibly some stolen - stuff is now turning up in their search.   Since there's no traffic statistics or view count, it's impossible to know if there's any significant activity.

The main page is pretty much unchanging.  It shows a bunch of images, many of which have been there for ages, and many of which are IMHO not very good.

They sure aren't giving FAA any competition as far as I can see.
Title: Re: Crated - Share Links to your gallery and support each others work
Post by: wordplanet on August 17, 2016, 11:07
They seem to be using social media more regularly, so maybe that will bring in more buyers. I think the quality overall is higher than FAA but there does seem to be a lot more dreck - stuff that might be okay as stock but not what you'd want to hang on your wall, if you go deeper into the site, but the images on the first pages that they have curated are all good - not all my taste but they make sense on an art site. I wish they were curating every piece so searches didn't bring up the dreck.

I've worked hard uploading there and have spent time marketing my work there on social media, so I would expect far more sales by now, but I know others getting sales recently too, so I'm hoping it's going to start taking off. New sites are at such a disadvantage, so I'm willing to give them some time.

I have a friend who orders all his show pieces from them via the wholesale program and loves the quality - framed prints and canvas. I haven't ordered anything from them, so can't vouch for it firsthand. I ordered a framed print and a metal one from FAA as well as cards and was very happy with the quality. Crated has much lower shipping fees.
Title: Re: Crated - Share Links to your gallery and support each others work
Post by: stockastic on August 17, 2016, 15:22
I guess we're using the word 'curating' two different ways.  AFAIK, if you just open and account and upload images, they won't show up in search.  You have to be seen and approved by the curator.   Mine initially sat there quite a while, finally I emailed them and asked about getting this approval, and they very promptly granted it.   Before they did that, I didn't appear in search; afterward, I did.   As far as showing up on the main page or being featured in some way, I don't know.

At least, that's how it used to work. But within the last few months I started noticing really poor quality stuff turning up in searches.   Clueless snapshots,  in repetitious groups.   I could post examples here but that's probably not a good idea, because I'm not alleging anything fraudulent.

I've also seen a couple of portfolios of high quality images which are pretty obviously from multiple sources - not the work of one person - which is a red flag.

So, I'm left wondering what's going on.  Seems to be an honest operation so maybe I'm misunderstanding something.
Title: Re: Crated - Share Links to your gallery and support each others work
Post by: wordplanet on August 18, 2016, 09:23
There are two kinds of "curation":
1.When you join you need to be "curated" to have your work show up in searches and it seems as though they have lowered their standards IMHO.
2. Individual images can also be"curated" and end up high in search for a while and then fall lower as new curated works take their place.

Finally, there are featured collections on the front page which may or may not contain "curated" works.

Other random works end up on the front page if you hit the "discover" tab.

They seem to be more active on twitter, at least I've seen them feature one of my galleries there about a month ago and I see other artists featured there fairly regularly now. In my experience too it seems as though FAA has cornered the market on POD framed prints - I earn the most there -  but there still seems to be room for other POD sites such as Crated and redbubble (where I get regular sales but mostly lower value iPhone cases, etc) - I've even had sales on Photo4Me, where I have a handful of images. It's just a random $100-200 here and there on these other POD sites, but it adds up over time. I've made more lately from actual gallery sales, but that's a lot more work framing my photographs, keeping track of inventory, etc. (though I love meeting people and discussing my work with them). I think the time spent uploading to the POD sites is worthwhile, but your experience may be very different. I do tweet and share my work on g+ and FB from some of those sites, though I've had random sales on sites I don't market at all.
Title: Re: Crated - Share Links to your gallery and support each others work
Post by: stockastic on August 18, 2016, 09:57
RedBubble doesn't read IPTC data so it's a non-starter for me.   I uploaded a bunch to Photo4Me, although it's a pain - way too many clicks.  But when I look at "recently sold" it's 90%  UK tourist and landscape subjects, the remainder being mostly RAF planes, historic trains etc. so I gave up there.   On FAA, I sell a couple a month, sometimes more.

I'm pulling for Crated because it's a better looking presentation than FAA.   I'll keep uploading there, but it would be nice if they gave us some visitor stats.
