I made a sale (print) this morning - my first at Crated. Just thought I'd reply to the thread as donding had asked...

So happy for you, Jo Ann! It's nice to hear about it when things work as they're supposed to.

Thanks. Wouldn't it be nice if things happened that way more of the time?

I did increase my percentage take a bit (I had left it close to the minimum before) .  If any other MSG member has had a Crated sale, it'd be nice to hear about it/them - just to see how things are progressing with the site.

Happy to hear sales happen on Crater!  I removed my 20 images yesterday, though. I felt so  uncomfortable with the fact that my images could be so easily downloaded without watermark that I decided to stop adding more images and finally removed the existing ones from Crated. I contacted support regarding the no-watermark problem and I got evasive responses. If communication by their part improves in the future I would consider uploading again.

I just went to my gallery since I only have five photos there right now and had an online chat re: what it means to be "curated: so I could decide whether or not to upload some more. Here's the relevant portion of the conversation:

Crated:
... your Gallery itself has been Promoted (which some users call Curated) and shows up in the 'All' Search which is definitely used the most on our site. We don't necessarily need to see more of your gallery. The 'Curated' search isn't for galleries as a whole, just specific images that have been chosen to display on the front of Crated.com

Our curators do select images from old galleries or new uploads to place on the front page. There's no real way of better getting selected there.

I hope that helps clarify! Just let me know if you want me to expand on either thought there.
That's why when you search "Fish" only two images show up under Curated, we've only had two images containing that tag, whereas many Promoted / Curated galleries would display Fish.

Me:
How often do you change the front page? Do we get notified if one of our images makes it to the front page?

Crated:
You will get notified if an image is chosen for our front page! Uploading more may help with this goal if of the same caliber of work too. I'm not sure how often it rotates as they don't have a schedule but I know over 3 days over half the page has updated.

My conclusion:
It looks like it is in fact a tiered system as my photos show up in regular searches, thus my gallery has been promoted. The photos that show up on the front page are specially curated, so it would make sense to upload more as a front page photo should have more potential to sell.

Going back there now to make sure I follow everyone who's followed me since the last time I checked in there a few weeks back. No sales yet (with 5 photos not really expected) but appreciate the follows :)

I just don't get it. My work is not in the search. I put up about 6 bird images after i was initially accepted way back when i got an invitation to join and applied and was accepted. i got 2 emails n June that refer to me as a crated artists. Yet nothing shows up in the searches. My work is as good or better than what is there. I sell regular on FAA. I have gorgeous photos of Roseate Spoonbills but the search turns up only one other. One of the brown pelican photos they have up is overexposed. Mine are perfect.  I would start uploading in earnest but if i will not be in the search i wont bother. And why do they refer to me as an early crated artist? Glad I found this thread.

I am still mystified or more so now.

Go to Dashboard then pricing. You have to mark up rather high to match your price on other POD sites. To me that's good because that meant my cut will be much higher if my work sold via crated.

Congrats Jo Ann.

This is great news. Several people I know have made sales on Crated.

Congrats Jo Ann on your sale!  I haven't had anything yet, but I don't have much on there yet and I need to get uploading again - been on holiday and since then have spent my photography time sorting the images I took rather than uploading anything anywhere (as some of them are experiments in star trails/Milky Way photography, it's taking me longer than normal!).

Nice job, Joanne.  I ended up pulling all of my stuff due to watermark issues and unclarity as to what is "curated" and what isn't. I've never got a clear answer so I didn't want to leave my stuff up there. But, again, nice to see someone make a sale there.

No sales yet, but one of my images just made the homepage. Hopefully that will help.

Thanks for the congrats. Great that they put one of yours on the home page Mike (mine never have been, BTW, so the image must have been found via search) - in general, that type of up front exposure can't be bad.

I understand about the watermark issue, but I'm living with FAA's almost useless watermark already and there's always a theft risk from all the sites that legitimately use my purchased images, so I've decided that I'm not making the lack of a watermark a no-go criterion, at leasst for now.

For those of you on FAA, I've noticed a lot of what appears to be trawling through my portfolio (over days and weeks) from what appears to be a single location. I worry that someone's lifting all the watermarked previews from there as I can't figure out why there'd be so many crawlers.

For Crated's search, I get some very odd results on some searches, and checking to see if it's keyword spam, it appears to be that they search descriptions. So one description of a shot of Bear Lake in Idaho says that it has been called the "Caribbean of the Rockies" and so the image shows up in a search for Caribbean. Given how awful some people's keywords are (lack of keywords, I assume from contributors who aren't selling stock) I guess they figured this would help.

Congrats on the front page feature Mike!
I think I agree with Jo Ann re the watermark issue and plan to upload some new stuff soon. I figure being in on the ground floor is a good thing and if people are selling already that's a good sign.

If they ever announce a clear, rational system for submitting images and getting them 'accepted' (meaning they show up in search) then I'll take another look.

Not interested in the guessing game they're playing now.

Jo Ann, is that trawling coming from Provo, UT?  I've been getting many hits from there, and so has my husband (who has his own fine art paintings on FAA).

Not for me. St. Petersburg, Russian Federation and Sunnyvale, CA. Any new uploads are visited by Kiez - Germany, but I haven't uploaded in a few months, so mostly this is just visits to existing stuff.

I've had huge increases in the past week from New York; also Palo Alto, Ca (apparently Facebook, but I don't know why that would be - hotlinking?) and Germany (not Kiez this time) today in particular. I also have one file which has many more views than the next highest, from a huge range of locations, but no sales; yet GIS doesn't reveal any thefts.

Another question, I got a notice that someone collected one of my artworks. What does it mean? Does it mean that the image has been put into that person's "lightbox" or "favorites"?
