I write fiction and have two novels in print as POD. I publish them in my real name.

The choice entirely depends on what you want to accomplish. There's no right/wrong yes/no answer to this question.

I did not vote, because it depends on the real name.
In your case, Martha:

Novel + POD + needs a serious name.

Martha Marks is a great name for it! ;) So - in your case - I wouldn´t change to a pen name. Or you should publish them here and maybe your idea of pen name is nicer.

of course we have to believe this is your real name!

Ahhhh, Steve, you have amazingly discovered my terrible, long-hidden secret.

My real name is Angostura Bitters von der Daiquiri und der Mojito. I was born a princess of an ancient Eastern European royal family that was overthrown in a violent coup 250 years ago and never heard from again. But we few isolated descendants of the proud von der Daiquiri und der Mojito line have never forgotten. We hold our heads high, try to keep our secret to ourselves, and drink ourselves into blissful oblivion every single evening.

I cleverly use Martha Marks as my nom de plume for both fiction and photography.

I'd think the only exception or reason would be if your real name is Steven King or Nora Roberts or John Steinbeck. Otherwise, real names are just fine. If your work is good, your name will become your identity. Like bands, creepy crawly Beatles? Or something stupid like "The Doors"? Justin Beiber, really? J.K. Rowling, would it matter if she was any other name?

The work defines the identity, not that picking a good name will make your work sell better.

Selling a product is different, where a name might matter.

Thanks a bunch every one! The info you guys provided is very helpful and useful. Much appreciated! 😊👍
Just making a children's book.  My first one. Its a bit of an experiment just to see if its worth my time. I did have success in the past working for others. I still don't wanna give up on that but I just wanted something to call my own.

Sometimes writers have a different name if they write in a different genre so that their fans do not buy a book of one genre and then get a different genre they do not like...and then complain because reader did not read blurb before buying and trash the book in a book review

This is very true. Good, astute observation and contribution to this thread.
