Title: Weird e-mail from Crated
Post by: donding on June 19, 2014, 10:19
I got this e-mail from Crated

"Hi there,

I hope you're having a great day!

First off, I want to send a huge "thanks" for the feedback we've received from early Crated community members like you. Your suggestions have already gone a long way towards helping us to create an even better experience.

Today I'm reaching out to get your feedback on an exciting upcoming project.

We want to host a local art event in YOUR city, featuring YOUR art. If you're interested in partnering with Crated, please complete the short survey below.

Yes, I'm interested. Start survey now.

Thanks, from the Alyssa and the Crated team. "

Has anyone else gotten an e-mail like this....the weird thing about it is that I've never gotten an e-mail saying I've been "crated". Also the part about YOUR city....I live in a small town and I freelance...I don't have a studio per say and can't quite see an art show here. Nobody would even show up.

I received the e-mail, but I don't plan to partner with them in hosting a local art event, so I didn't take the survey.

The only difference in my e-mail is that it started "Hi Jo Ann,"

I didn't take the survey either. They didn't name me personally. I just don't understand why they would send that when as far as I know I have not been "crated".

I've been receiving emails from them announcing a "new feature" that allows people to have their own work printed. Perhaps this is a way to get you to order 20 prints and have a "show?"

Maybe so.

I just find it strange they would say  "We want to host a local art event in YOUR city, featuring YOUR art." and then have to take a survey.

Like I said before as far as I know I've never even been "crated" as far as I know, so why would I want to support them if they won't support me. I just submitted my photos within the last three weeks so I wasn't one of the first ones on there either.

I had saved the email but forgot about it. I thought if they wanted to spend the MONEY to host an event in MY CITY, then, yeah, I'll kick in a couple of bucks for some prints. Just looked at the survey. Very few and vague questions. My guess is if you don't live in a large metro area and/or they don't get a huge response from people willing to 'collaborate' which means invest, then it won't happen.

Same email here. I'm actually going to pull my stuff. I am not yet comfortable and probably should have held off.  Lots of people nabbing my unwatermarked images.

Edit: I just deleted all of my images. Maybe I'll give them a chance later when they get some traction. For now, I'll go to the back of the line.

Just pulled my stuff, too. I had a direct mail exchange with a staff. They don't seem to care about piracy.

That's exactly right. In my early-June exchange with a Crated staffer, he indicated they *might* someday consider adding a watermark to the images "in the size we care to protect." Clearly, they don't share an artist's desire to protect *all sizes* of his/her images.

I'm very happy to be gone from Crated.

Thanks for the heads up.  Glad I made the right choice.

That's exactly what my guy said. Adding watermarks script is simple so I figured they just don't want to do it. They just want to encourage sharing via pintherests and such. Free advertisements for them vulnerability for us. I had my lessons from 500px. Not gonna take another chance.

I don't put my stock photos in there, only those artsy experimental pieces that have been sitting on my hard drive anyway. I have known a few people made sales there already. So, I will still be sticking around.

That's the same thing with me. The photos on there wouldn't sell as stock. Same thing with Fine Art America. They are the textured artsy type of photo's or landscapes.

I suspect this is an effort to get some more events like the SOHO event they hosted. They probably just want people in different areas to take the lead on these events so they don't have to. Or to at least suggest/scout possible locations, spread the word locally about the event, etc.

That would be my guess, anyway.
