Photo Critique / Application to StockXpert
« on: March 06, 2008, 08:48 »
Hi folks, with my first application I've got rejection with StockXpert. And have to wait one month before second chance.
Could anyone advice which 5 photos to use for application to StockXpert from mine DT portfolio.
If you believe that all photos aren't good enough for application, please frankly tell this, I'd appreciate such feedback and will wait till got better ones or choose from those I didn't submit yet.

PS no photos from DT were used for initial application, those which I've submitted have problems with contrast(later thanks for help to people on this forum I realized which contrast levels are correct for picture).

Thank you in advance!

Adobe Stock / Fotolia or IStock?
« on: March 04, 2008, 01:26 »
After reading these forums and articles on the web I've got feeling that IStock have much strictest rules in images' acceptance, but seems I was wrong, I don't have problems in getting my images to IS, DT and rest but Fotolia is really mean to me for some reason :)
Most of my images are get rejected in time they are accepted everywhere... (maybe because of my 4mp camera and matter that for other sites I downsize my noisy pictures but for FT my resolution is marginally accepted so submit images as is).
Wonder am I alone in this or I've just got wrong initial impression and Fotolia is more picky to images than others?

(I'm not including SS as doesn't register there and don't have any experience with them).

Photo Critique / composition advice
« on: February 26, 2008, 12:11 »
Hi! After one of my photos from aquapark was bought I decide to try uploading more from the same trip.
Here is photo of water fountain which was rejected for first time because sun umbrella contained logotypes and second time for poor composition. I've tried to crop it according to rules of thirds but think that image look less appealing in this case.

Do you think this photo simply have wrong composition from beginning and couldn't be cured by cropping? If so I'd appreciate if someone cat advice if there is a way to take such photo correctly?
#1 uncropped version
#2 cropped version
#3 cropped version

General Stock Discussion / first sale feeling...
« on: February 24, 2008, 20:59 »
Do you still remember feeling when you got your first sale?
I should tell it's great feeling and although I've just made 0.60$ it's still good to know that your pictures could be sold(as I have doubts previously that someone would buy anything).

I have to tell that have sold images before from my own site but selling on microstocks is kind of different so I feel excited when find out that someone choose one from 4 uploaded images on IS  ;D

General Stock Discussion / downloads and views in statistic
« on: February 19, 2008, 20:10 »
Wonder if stock sites like IS, DT, FT in public statistic display total number of downloads and views or just for certain periods and reset old numbers after certain period of time?

Wonder how do you keep track of what photographs have been submitted by you?
Personally I've just sorted all photos for submission created folders for each stock and copied there what was already submitted. But thanks to Lee's idea I decide to make excel file where store numbers of submitted photos and keep track of what was submit and where, exclusive images and rest of info.
I also think about writing own program which would keep track of this but not sure if it's really needed as right now I think that spreadsheet should do the job.
Wonder if anyone use different ways of storing such info or maybe use some program?

Hi folks!
I'm still pretty new in stock photography world and wish to save extra time to editors who review my photographs.
I wonder if there are some stock agency which would be best used for evaluation of your photograph to see if it's well suit for stocks.
E.g. you submit photo there and if it's accepted there is good chance that it would be accepted by other sites too? Or there is no such site and each agency have pretty different preferences?

If someone using such technique I would appreciate if you tell more about it.

PS Right now I try my photos on DT first as they seems to give somehow reasonable feedback at least. But it seems that same photos which was accepted on DT could be declined on IS and FT(or it's rather exclusion than the case?).

Photo Critique / looking for your opinion
« on: February 17, 2008, 12:57 »
I would like to know what do you think about this picture?

The reason I'm asking is because it was recently submitted out of curiosity to DT and got rejection about bad lighting.
I've tried to use auto correction to it(since I have no way to calibrate monitor right now) and colors look completely different and doesn't bring same emotions as with original photo and jeep doesn't look like silhouette anymore.
So I wonder if such colors are acceptable or not? (or maybe it's really so bad with my monitor).

Any feedback and critique are welcome! :)

General - Top Sites / are small images likely to be ignored?
« on: February 16, 2008, 19:03 »
My camera output 4mp images, so I wonder if anyone can tell that images done with low resolution camera are likely to be ignored by buyers and most likely go for higher resolution alternatives? The reason I'm asking is that although IStock and DT already accepted my photographs I've got bunch of rejections because of noise and artifacting especially on IS as they seems to be very picky to even those photographs which are good for DT.

So I wonder if pictures downsized to 1600x1200 which is minimal resolution right now on both sites,  have any chances to compete with the rest or most likely to be ignored?

As downsizing seems to be the only good option for me right now, as it let me get rid some of JPEG artifacts originally left by camera compression.

Dreamstime.com / File Resubmission
« on: February 07, 2008, 12:41 »
Wonder how frequently you're using file resubmission in what cases?
And are files really accepted for second time if problem is solved or not?

Also does anyone know how it affecting acceptance ratio, are submissions considered as new ones or not?

Dreamstime.com / Control over images in free section?
« on: February 06, 2008, 20:37 »
Hi! I've asked this question on DT forums but as always didn't get response :P So maybe I'll get more luck here  ::)
Can anyone tell what control you have over images which are in free sections.
Could they be deleted anytime or not?
Can I change details for them?
is there a way to move image back to non-free section?

Computer Hardware / Does anyone using PANTONE huey?
« on: February 06, 2008, 15:53 »
I was consider to buy PANTONE huey some day and wonder if anyone using it? (Decide on this one since it's working with Agryll on Linux)
Would appreciate any feedback about it's work and how does it compare to other calibration tools.
it also would be interesting to know how useful feature of adapting monitor for changing room lighting or it's rather marketing pitch?
Thank you!

General - Top Sites / Somebody can help me?
« on: February 02, 2008, 04:54 »
Recently I was accepted to IStock but same 3 pictures along with 4 another was disapproved with DreamsTime as "Poor lighting setup, poor contrast or incorrect exposure.". Although they look well on my monitor, so I wonder that maybe my monitor wrongly calibrated and I see totally different picture than reviewers on other end?
Maybe someone can help me and review rejected photos on calibrated monitor and tell what he think? If you would like to help, please let me know and I'll upload few of them to my site and send you PM with URLs.(this is to save on bandwidth as I'm overused it last few months).
Thank you in advance!

Computer Hardware / What monitor type you're using
« on: February 02, 2008, 02:52 »
Few years ago when I had some spare cash I was thinking about upgrading my Samsung SyncMaster 750, but after reading about color fidelity issues with TN monitors. TN technology was widely available but monitors with different technology cost here much more(comparing to other countries) need to be preordered and fully prepaid.

Now after few years I wonder if color fidelity is still issue and you prefer CRT or LCD have been improved well enough to be suitable for photo editing?

I'd appreciate any feedback with info about particular models, as some day I'll have to upgradre my monitor and wish to be ready to do this.

Off Topic / Anyone using *nix OS here?
« on: January 27, 2008, 21:36 »
Wonder if anyone here except me is using Linux or other *nix based systems as primary OS?
And if so what graphic packages you're using when working with graphics?
I'm using GIMP, Hugin, gThumb, Blender and NeatImage through Wine.

Dreamstime.com / Changing image exclusivity?
« on: January 27, 2008, 16:29 »
If I submit image as exclusive to DT and later decide to sell it elsewhere would I be able to cancel it's exclusivity?
And vice versa situation: would I be able to make image exclusive once it's approved if I decide to stop selling it elsewhere?
If it's possible is there any grace period between changing status of images?

Thank you!

General - Top Sites / Would you consider this as too much noise?
« on: January 27, 2008, 14:20 »
My camera originally output very noisy images. I just submit few photos to DT and waiting for review.
In the meantime I've select another image which have a lot of "clear" sky where noise become really obvious.
This photo was taken on ISO 50 and shutter speed 1/500 so on good camera I think noise wouldn't be apparent.
I've attached two images, one is unfiltered with uncorrected WB and filtered one(with neat image), but I'm afraid it's still have a lot of noise.

What do you think is cropped part of filtered have acceptable amount of noise or not?

General Stock Discussion / Do you postprocess all photos or not?
« on: January 27, 2008, 08:10 »
Wonder how you post process photographs before submitting them to stock agencies. Are all photos getting post processed or only those which have wrong white balance, need cropping, or something else?

Adobe Stock / Anyone submit 2272 x 1704 images?
« on: January 27, 2008, 04:07 »
Yesterday I've finally registered to Fotolia and when it's come to submitting there, I've discovered this: "Photo resolution must be greater than or equal to 2400 x 1600 (4 Million pixels)."
I've wrote to support to see if they accept such images or not but didn't hear from them yet.

If anyone submit photos from 4megapixel cameras with different resolution like 2272 x 1704?

General Stock Discussion / Image resolution margins
« on: January 26, 2008, 14:29 »
Wonder what images resolution typically you submit to stocks?

Currently I'm using my KM Dimage z3 camera which have 4megapixel and it's look like very close to lowest margin on some agencies, wonder if agencies would avoid such low resolution images or not?

General Stock Discussion / Sell the rights?
« on: January 25, 2008, 20:41 »
Wonder if you agree to sell rights(I mean full buyout) of your images?
And if so would you tell how much you've earn on this?

Adobe Stock / Is it worth to be exclusive?
« on: January 25, 2008, 17:08 »
Hi folks, I'm new to stock photography business so would appreciate some advices.

what do you think about being exclusive to Fotolia? Maybe someone is working on this scheme, or did this in the past? Would appreciate your feedback on this matter.

Also I failed to find on their site about definition of being exclusive, does it mean that you can sell all your photos through them?(asking because I wish to sell my best photos through PhotoShelter and the rest through DreamsTime and Fotolia)
