General Stock Discussion / Please Critique New Stock Site
« on: January 21, 2007, 21:38 »
I just finished putting together a specialized stock site (its only wine industry photography), and wanted your uninhibited critiques -- I've been working in a vacuum and would like opinions from folks familiar with stock sites and could spot any glaring errors I have made but am too involved to notice.  For example -- do I have too much text on the home page?  Are the categories easy to read?  Is the navigation intuitive?

I'm especially concerned because I couldn't afford the expensive stock software so had to build this pretty much from scratch -- who knows how many mistakes I've made!

Its at: http://www.vinografia.com/

TIA!!!

Software - General / Stock Photo Software
« on: December 27, 2006, 15:58 »
I'm wanting to create my own niche stock photo site -- do any of you know of any cheap stock photo software?  I've been drooling over http://www.imagefolio.com/, but its out of budget (for now) so was hoping for something that maybe takes some setting up but with a much cheaper price.

TIA!

Featurepics.com / Actually sold one on FeaturePics!!!
« on: October 27, 2006, 09:41 »
I started uploading to FeaturePics about a week ago and with over a hundred images listed at $5.00 apiece, I'm happy to say I actually made a sale!!!!  It's pretty nice to get $3.50 commission for an image!

I remember reading previous posts about their upload process being difficult -- its now super quick and easy!  For those of you still on the fence about submitting to them, you may want to take another look (says the woman flush with victory over her $3.50 sale)

I'm putting together a web template/background but am unsure what size/resolution to make it?  I'm assuming the resolution should be 72, but with all the screen resolutions out there, what size should I make it? Is it possible to upload several sizes in one file?

Photo Critique / Illustration Review
« on: October 20, 2006, 00:00 »
Hi All! I'm working on this illustration and feel I should do more on it (shadows around the hand), but am wondering if I should just leave it alone and mark it finished -- what do you guys think?

Lighting / What Fabrics Make Good Backgrounds?
« on: October 18, 2006, 18:18 »
I would like to buy some material from a fabric store to use as a background -- are there do's and don'ts to doing this?

(I've done this before, and the felt-like tan colored fabric worked great, but the one that was similar to polyester and a dark red wine color turned out aweful. I don't know if it was the type of material that made the difference or the colors, so before I buy any more material I would like to make sure what I'm buying will work.)

Thank you so much!

iStockPhoto.com / 'Exclusive to iStock'
« on: October 18, 2006, 10:45 »
I have heard (and seen while browsing) many contributers who are 'exclusive to iStock'.  Does iStock give preference to those who are exclusive in their Search Engine?  And with such a low upload limit, how can anyone be exclusive to just iStock?

8
I'm torn as to what I should be focusing on for the microstocks -- photography or vector illustration.  Do illustrations tend to be downloaded more than photos?  Or are photo's by the far the favorite?

iStockPhoto.com / iStockphoto Upload Limit
« on: October 12, 2006, 09:45 »
I was finally accepted in to iStock, and can only upload 20 files in a 168 hour time period.  Does anyone know how long this restriction will last?

10
With all the different upload methods and limits, I'm starting to get lost on what I've allready submitted when and where.  How do you guys keep track?

Shutterstock.com / How to know if you're doing good or not?
« on: October 08, 2006, 18:16 »
I have 33 images at Shutterstock and made $9.50 so far this month

Most of my photographs are of grapes and vineyards, so I don't expect them to be super popular.  But not knowing the normal image # to income ratio, maybe they are more popular than I was thinking?  So after looking at my ratios, am I doing good, bad, or average?

I see so many of the photos at the microstock sites include models, and I wanted to know how you go about finding them (are they all friends and relatives?), how much you pay them (who knows if you'll ever recoup this expense), and do they ever act weird about signing the model release forms?

Cameras / Lenses / Image Noise and Camera Settings
« on: September 22, 2006, 16:25 »
How accurate are the standard settings the camera comes with?  (I have Canon Rebel XT)  I usually use the standard settings (unless I'm shooting in the studio) and actually have a very steady hand -- I thought the pictures I submitted to Shutterstock were noise free and they were accepted everywhere else.  (I'm not disputing their verdict, they just made me realize I need to look more closely at my pictures.)

I checked one of their rejected photos and now that I know what to look for, I spotted the noise -- but I think it is very slight.  Could you guys possibly check out one of the photos and let me know if I'm correct in thinking its a slight amount of noise?  Or if I've deluded myself and need a lot of work?  I put the photo here http://www.rachellcoe.com/grapes.htm (Its at 100% so you can see what ShutterStock saw) If the noise is only very slight, would I be better off using the noise software than changing my camera settings?

General Stock Discussion / Noise Reduction Software?
« on: September 22, 2006, 11:39 »
I just had a bunch of photos rejected at ShutterStock because of 'Noise'.  I hear this is a common problem at ShutterStock, and since I want to be included in their database I'm willing to jump through the hoops.

What are some of the good noise reduction software?  These particular photos I hadn't thought had noise, so I didn't even use Photoshop's noise filter -- how do the 'professional' noise filters compare to the Photoshop noise filter that comes with the program?

Thanks!

General Macrostock / What Are the Main Macro Stock Sites?

I know about Corbis, GettyImages and Alamy, but what are some of the other Macro Stock heavy hitters?

General Stock Discussion / Editorial -- Good? Bad? Indifferent?
« on: September 09, 2006, 14:32 »
I took a lot of concert photography over the summer, and was thinking of selling them at Shutterstock (from all my research, it looks like Shutterstock is the best one).  Of course I would have to mark them as editorial since the faces are clearly visible.  The photos I have are of Dierks Bently, Ani Defranco, Floater, Cowboy Junkies, Death Cab for Cutie, etc -- so I have some major names.  Would these even really sell?  If not, do any of you have ideas as to where they would sell?

Here is an example of one of the pictures:

Alamy.com / Alamy: Is it a Good one? Which Plan?
« on: September 08, 2006, 17:21 »
Hi!  I saw on some of the other posts they were selling on Alamy, but it is not in the top 5 list -- is it a good stock place to sell to?  If so, they offer two plans: you get 65% commission and pay no storage fees, or you get 75% commission and pay 10 cents per photo per month for storage.  Which of these plans is the better choice?

General Stock Discussion / Need help understanding photo rights
« on: September 08, 2006, 15:40 »
I'm one of those people who is very smart at anything creative, but understanding the legalities of who owns the rights to a photo once its been submitted and accepted by a stock photo company is beyond me.  I was hoping one of you could answer a couple of questions regarding this?  And hopefully answer it in in idiotese?

If a stock photo company like Dreamstime accepts my submitted photos, does this mean they now own the image and I can't sell or use it anymore?  If not, can I submit the same image to several stock companies?

Also, what has worked better for you guys -- Royalty Free or Extended License?
