I just discovered this amazing app:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motioncam.pro

It is able to shoot full sensor (4080 x 3060) 60fps RAW videos on my S24 Ultra, with all 4 lenses, without dropping any frames.
What was only possible with expensive pro cameras, is now with me all the time.

It is true that the files are large (>10 GB for 30 seconds), but the idea is to capture all the information available on the sensor while in the field and worry about color grading and recoding at home.

Here are a couple of videos highlighting the massive quality difference between stock camera apps and MCP:

https://youtu.be/AjkchOsifNg
https://youtu.be/O5fnGDR4i9w

It opens up many editing options, not only to those familiar with Davinci Resolve or Premiere Pro, but also to photographers who may only be familiar with Lightroom (editing a video the same way time-lapses are edited, because each frame can be exported as a RAW DNG from the RAW footage).

Microstock News / Beware of NFT scammers
« on: January 06, 2024, 19:51 »
I got this weird email sent from Fine Art America:

I'm interested in buying a few of your artworks for my exhibition, about 5-10 artworks.  But I'm only interested in buying them as NFTs.

Ill offer $2500 for each of these artworks I purchase from you as Id love to purchase these artworks as digital artworks(NFTs). Do you have a knowledge about this or should I explain further?

This is a typical NFT scam, intending to convince greedy gullible "artists" to pay hundreds of dollars on "specialized" NFT sites, to register their "art" as a prerequisite for these promised sales, which will never happen.

For users of Samsung S22 Ultra (and S23 Ultra, and maybe other variants).
I noticed that the new Lightroom AI denoise algorithm doesn't work with this phone's DNG files.
I went back to RAW photos I shot in December, and guess what? Those RAW photos can be denoised by the new LR algorithm!

After digging deeper, I realised that something happend in between.
Most likely, a firmware update screwed things up.

Below is the before/after EXIF data.

We can clearly see that the new DNGs are not uncompressed RAW anymore, but Linear RAW with embedded JPEG compression.
This explains why LR AI Denoise doesn't work on these files anymore

I suspect that the problem started sometimes in April, when Expert RAW was added as an option inside the default camera app, in Pro mode.

Expert RAW always had these linear RAW files (since these are HDR DNGs), and I suspect that when the two things were combined, the Expert RAW DNG generating algoritm replaced the original RAW algorithm. Not good.

Also, as a side note: The x3 and x10 sensors have 10Mpix native resolution (3648 x 2736), but the outputs of Expert RAW and the regular camera app in photo mode are 12Mpix (4000 x 3000)!

So Expert RAW is upscaling the output of the x3 and x10 cameras. This is not what RAW files are supposed to do. It only confirms that the DNG is in fact a JPEG file in a DNG container.

Anyways, I opened a case with Samsung. Hopefully they will realise the error and restore the original capabilities.

DepositPhotos / Revenue Share Special Program
« on: April 29, 2021, 08:26 »
I just got this notification:

Thanks for being a part of our community!

At Depositphotos, were always on the lookout to create new opportunities for our contributors. For this reason, were launching a special program to help you earn more with your current portfolio.
The new Depositphotos plan allows clients to download files from special collection. Theyll include high-quality works from contributors that arent receiving the attention they deserve.

This means that your content will have a higher chance of reaching potential buyers and being purchased.

Files that will receive an extra boost

We handpicked the files that we believe will find success within the program. Check out the files that we selected from your portfolio in this Special Program lightbox .
If youre happy with our selection, then no further action is needed. If you would like to add or delete files, please do so within 7 days of receiving this email.

See your selected files ➝

What youll earn from selling files within the program

Your earnings will be based on a Revenue Share model. This means that 40% of net revenue will be allocated among contributors whose files have been downloaded within the new plan.
Read more details about the new model here.

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected]

Regards,
Depositphotos Team

The details behind the model specify this:

The Contributors who participate in the Revenue Share Special Program will be awarded royalties as follows. If a photo or vector image is purchased under the Revenue Share Special Program, your earnings increase with your Contributors Level. 40% of net subscription revenue is allocated among Contributors. The greater the proportion of an individual subscriber's downloads that relates to your files, the more you earn. The greater the number of subscribers who use your files, the more you earn. Earnings for photos and vector images are awarded in bulk at the end of the Revenue Share Special Program period.

I'm not sure what to make of it.

Is anyone familiar with "Ungraded": https://ungraded.video/ ?

It seems like a good idea, but I'm not sure how reliable they are.

iStockPhoto.com / Getty - 500px partnership
« on: May 31, 2018, 11:12 »
Just got this message:

Hi xxx,

As one of our most valued contributors, we wanted to let you know about some major enhancements and changes coming to our stock photography marketplace. These changes will help maximize your potential earnings by positioning your content at the right price and with the right distribution.

Starting July 1st, 2018, were offering our community an exclusive opportunity to work with our newest global distribution partner, Getty Images.

How does this benefit you?

The greatest benefit for contributors will be the increase in people/buyers looking at your photos. Getty Images is the largest photography marketplace in the world, as well as a leading distributor of award-winning imagery. Serving approximately 1M customers in almost every country in the world, Getty Images is the go-to choice for professionals to discover and purchase creative content.

Post-partnership, most of our photographers will have access to:

Larger audience and increased reach
Improved exposure, through sophisticated AI-powered keywording and belonging to the 500px collection on Getty Images
Opportunity to increase earnings
Upcoming features to further increase your photo sales (to be released this year)
What does this mean for 500px Marketplace?

As a result of this change, we are closing 500px Marketplace on June 30, 2018. If youre a contributing photographer who has not opted out of distribution, your images may be selected for inclusion on Getty Images, as well as on our long-term distribution partner, Visual China Group (VCG), which acquired 500px back in February and markets photos in China.

What does this mean for my contract and photos?

The terms of the existing Contributor Agreement and your royalty rate remain unchanged, as does the process for submitting your images for licensing via 500px:use your Photo Manager to upload images, choose representation rights (exclusive vs. non-exclusive), and add appropriate keywords and releases before saving changes.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions, or check out our FAQ here.

Thanks,

The 500px Team

It looks like Getty will use 500px the same way they used Flickr years ago.

Software / Lightroom CC on Samsung S9
« on: March 13, 2018, 21:16 »
I just got a new Samsung S9, after skipping several upgrade generations (since S9 expected to have maybe the best smartphone camera to date)

However, when after checking the Lightroom CC app, I was disappointed to notice that HDR Capture is not supported.
I remember that when the feature was launched, Adobe said it needs phones with good processing power, like S7.
S9 is a powerhorse, therefore it is expected to work.

Any S7/S8 users out-there? Is HDR Capture working for you guys?
If yes, maybe it is just a matter of patience to wait an update (and maybe the problem it is not the phone, but the new Android 8.0)
Thanks.

Adobe Stock / Adobe Photo research
« on: December 16, 2017, 16:31 »
Today I got an email from Adobe asking me to participate in a Lightroom survey.
What I found strange is that almost all questions were geared towards hobbyists, while the only money making alternative seemed to be full time photographer.
It looked to me that they were oblivious to the microstock industry where photography is the secondary job.
Otherwise, it is good to see that Adobe is concerned with the way LR is perceived by its users.

Just got this request to participate in the survey and I seized the opportunity to highlight that $35 for an exclusive photo is way below what can be achieved even in microstock in a year or less. They got a very low score from me.

What do you think about a famous photographer like Bryan F Peterson (he is all over Youtube) using stock photos to promote his own workshops?

Check the attachments and his website:
http://www.bryanfpetersonphotoworkshops.com/index_2017.html

and check these photos, for example:

Even if he legally purchased a license for these photos, I think this is misleading his customers in believing than he himself, or other members of his workshops took these photos. He is even using a photo from China to promote his Myanmar workshop  ;D

New Sites - General / 500px distributors
« on: September 01, 2017, 11:51 »
Last week I got this email:

Hi xxxxx,

Im writing to notify you that 500px will be processing a sale made by one of our distribution partners through your Marketplace store. In recent months, weve received a number of inquiries from our Marketplace photographers about distribution sales, so we want to clarify a few things.

We work with partners around the world to increase exposure of your images to buyers in foreign markets. These sales will show up in your Marketplace Store as License Name - Distributor Sale.  To learn more about our distribution network, click the following: https://licensing.500px.com/distribution/

With Distribution sales an additional party is added to the equation, so its important to keep in mind the gross sale amount is split 3 ways, as opposed to direct sales through the Marketplace that only involve you, the photographer, and 500px. Because of this, you may notice a variance in royalty amounts if multiple sales have been processed. These varying royalty amounts are affected by the image size purchased, and can also be related to high volume bundles, or volume discounts, by our distribution partner.

Still have questions? Weve set up a support page with frequently asked questions and answers - https://support.500px.com/hc/en-us/articles/231239347-500px-Marketplace-Distribution-FAQ

If for any reason youre not interested in harnessing the power of our global distribution network, we do offer the choice to opt-out. Simply head over to your 500px Settings and check the opt-out box under Distribution.

We hope this will help in clarifying distribution sales.

Soon after, more precisely yesterday and today, my inbox got flushed with a flurry of distributor sales ranging from $0.71 to $60. Even if these numbers are lower than usual, I'm fine with that, since the same photos generate a much lower RPD on most microstock sites.

However I am not so happy to see that some of these sales were made even back in November 2016 (!!!) and only reported now.

Anyway, on a positive note, I can cash them out right now, without waiting for the usual 40 days.

New Sites - General / Prioritized Editing for 500px Marketplace
« on: August 22, 2017, 15:49 »
Some movement from 500px:

Were currently in the process of reviewing our entire collection in an effort to identify the highest quality content. Im reaching out to let you know your images display the level of creativity and quality were looking for, and youll be joining a select group of photographers whose work will be prioritized and fast-tracked into our 500px Marketplace for licensing

This sounds interresting!
Other agencies could also benefit from curation, instead of asking customers to dig in a pile of garbage with million of similars and low quality material

Adobe Stock / new $4.75 sales?

Does anyone know what kind of sales are these?

New Sites - General / 500px - distribution partners email
« on: September 27, 2016, 13:36 »
Dear 500px Contributor,

As an active contributor to the 500px Marketplace, wed like to keep you up to date on how our Distribution partners are doing! Over the next couple of weeks 500px will be processing high volume Distribution sales through your Marketplace Store. With Distribution sales an additional party is added to the equation, so its important to keep in mind the gross sale amount is split 3 ways, as opposed to direct sales through the Marketplace that only involve two parties. Because of this, you may notice a variance in royalty amounts if multiple sales have been processed on your photos.

These particular sales reflect editorial one-time use licenses to media clients in Asia, at a file size similar to Web Ready. Our competitors, along with our own Distribution channel in the region, are offering these licenses to media clients for a single digital placement that normally lasts about 30 days based on news and social media cycles.

These licenses along with other Distributor sales will appear in your Marketplace Store under License Name - Distributor Sale.

If youre unfamiliar with our global network of distributors, we have all the information youll need on our distribution page - https://licensing.500px.com/distribution/

Our support pages will help with even more detail related to Licensing and Royalties - https://support.500px.com/hc/en-us/articles/217733298-Licensing-Structure-and-Royalty-Rates-FAQ - and of course, you can always reach out to our Customer Excellence team with any unanswered questions you might have.

Also, if for any reason youre not interested in harnessing the power of our global distribution network, we do offer the option to opt-out. Simply head over to your 500px Settings and check the opt-out box under Distribution.

New Sites - General / 500px prime
« on: September 04, 2016, 16:43 »
I noticed that each time some of my photos are selected into the prime collection, these photos get a boost in visibility. A new viral wave of views and likes is triggered.

I'm not sure why and how this works.
Any ideas?
