Off Topic / Managed to monetize a YT channel on 14.04.25 and earned more than SS this month« on: May 01, 2025, 00:04 »
In terms of microstock earnings my results for April 2025 are the worst since March 2023. So I feel its just in time that Ive achieved monetizing something other than microstock with my YouTube channel getting monetized on 14 April 2025.
Its just a drone channel capturing aerial views of primarily local major construction projects and road works. Funny these seem to be most popular drone videos on YouTube and watched typically by people who likely have no interest at all in drones. But it brings in the views. I dont know exactly what my final earnings for April will be on YouTube as I hear that what ends up in AdSense can be different and sometimes lower or higher than what is displayed in YouTube Analytics. But currently the estimated revenue on YouTube is $130.14 USD which started accruing on 14 April. By comparison on Shutterstock I earned $118.06 for the month of April and a dismal $16.54 on Pond5. Both ports have over 3000 videos and both SS and P5 use to sell videos quite well. Anyway I started the YouTube channel in June 2021 and had 26 videos published along with 354 subscribers at the time I went back to publish a new video in January 2025. I had only posted two videos on the channel in the past two years prior - one video on 1 January 2024 and one video on 3 January 2023. So it had been effectively inactive over those two years with little views or watch hours. Figured that during the slow period in Dec / Jan on microstock I would publish a fresh video and see how it goes. So did a drone shoot of the Western Sydney International Airport construction site (due to open late 2026) and to my surprise it got over 40,000 views. Did another video of the associated road works then another of the Airport and it achieved over 67,000 views (its now at 70,000 views). These two are the highest viewing videos to date. I just about reached my 4000 hours of public watch time from these videos alone so figured it would be a wasted opportunity to let this pass me by. Accordingly I continued publishing videos until I reached my 1000 subscribers which I achieved in April. Applied for the YouTube Partner Program and was accepted. All up I had published an additional 16 videos from 2 January 2025 to reach 4000 public watch hours and 1000 subscribers (the requirements for joining the YouTube Partner Program and monetization via AdSense). Having said all this theres some things I dont like about YouTube and other things I do like. But at this stage its what I do like that overrides what I dont like especially with microstock in the state that it is now. I dont like that most videos published on YouTube see a huge drop off of views quickly after being published, usually within a few days. Then its like Shutterstock subs from there. Im speaking about my contents in particular because what I create probably has much less shelf-life than channels that publish more evergreen content. So it does feel like more work to keep seeing results on YouTube compared to microstock. With microstock, you upload your contents, set and forget, and even if youre not active for weeks or months, you can still make good money. With YouTube, the fall off in revenue happens much quicker (though as I said thats with my contents). Having said that, with Microstock now I can spend all year uploading over 1000 videos and my earnings continue to decline so the points I raise here about what I dont like with YouTube seems not so bad given my recent past year or so of microstock experience. I guess another concern is what happens when the major construction projects that serve as popular subjects for drone videos today are completed. Can only hope other construction projects will start and then these will be new popular videos to shoot. This also takes into account proximity as theres no use travelling at distance if you cant readily return to those locations to film updates on those projects. The furthest I am travelling now is a 2 to 2.5 hour drive to major road upgrades up near Newcastle which attract quite a good audience and views. I do know another local drone channel here in Sydney with over 10,000 subscribers who does travel much further so I suppose it is worth it when you have built a bigger subscriber following. Anyway what I do like about publishing on YouTube as a monetized channel is a sense of confidence. Theres a lot more money behind Google than there is any microstock agency. And YouTube pays pretty well, with 55% cost per mille (CPM) paid to creators. That payment to creators is known as revenue per mille (RPM) which is how much the creator earns per 1000 valid views. YouTube also provides creators with some pretty decent analytics. The other thing I like about YouTube is that as soon as you hit publish on your video it goes live. Theres no waiting for reviews, getting rejections or waiting for sales. So you can know your video is making money right at the outset. I also like the feeling of being much more in control. The more you publish the more you will almost certainly earn. Unlike microstock, at least for me, now its like the more I upload the less I earn. Looking forward I will continue to focus more on YouTube than microstock, at least for the time being. I repurpose what I shoot for YouTube and upload a few of those to the stock sites but thats about it. I just think at this time in the current environment its important now we diversify income streams where we can. If something improves in microstock I will shift my focus accordingly. At the very least it has given me opportunities with developing new skills, learning new and different ways of monetizing content and providing an alternative additional platform for generating income online. Adobe Stock / Files being removed from port« on: April 10, 2025, 18:40 »
I've noticed one file was removed yesterday and another today from my Adobe port. That's only 2 files for now but how far and deep is this purge going to?
Yeh I read the email several week ago and so this should not be too much a surprise but personally I'm tired of the way all agencies are treating contributors now. Your mileage may vary but I'm no longer pursuing stock with anywhere near the dedication I use to. 5

General Stock Discussion / How reliant are you on microstock income?« on: August 31, 2024, 04:29 »
I have become partially reliant on microstock in recent years.
It has helped me to do some things in life I would not be able to do without it and I have a full time job - and I'm not talking about splurging on indulgences here. Rising costs and cost-of-living pressures has eroded my day-job discretionary income quite significantly. Some people still make a living from microstock and I have to say you have my sincere respect. Clearly you have worked hard and smart to achieve this. Others, like myself, have microstock as a supplementary albeit necessary side-income. Others have microstock simply as a hobby and making a bit of extra income, at whatever amounts, is like a small reward. 7
General Stock Discussion / I bought this used dealership 2013 Mazda 6 GT with my saved microstock earnings« on: August 20, 2024, 02:19 »
This might not be much for many contributors but it means a lot for me. Even with working full-time I would never of been able to upgrade on my old 2005 Mazda 6 Classic (with 376,000 kms | 233,000 miles) with this 12/2013 Mazda 6 GT 2.5L (with 146,000 kms | 90,000 miles) - at least not without a car loan - which I did this years ago and don't want to do again.
I bought this well-maintained car on the weekend and is fully paid with my microstock earnings - less a small trade in on the old Mazda. The GT is 8 years ahead of my old Classic but seriously feels like 20 years ahead. A grand leap in mod cons and features. Very impressive for a 10 year old vehicle and really nice car to drive. 8
iStockPhoto.com / July Statements Up Early« on: August 15, 2024, 17:34 »
Had an okay month in July 2024 though earnings were down about 13% from July 2023 even with quite consistent uploading over the year.
$296.43 was the monthly result with an RPD of $2.47 for stills and videos combined. 9
Adobe Stock / AI Generated video on Adobe Stock« on: August 15, 2024, 00:21 »
Was just doing a search of videos of Sydney City on Adobe Stock and came across this AI generated video clip of the city which has basically no resemblance (Link below). At least the clip is flagged as AI but find it strange Adobe would accept this kind of content.

Off Topic / Connection Timed Out - Anyone experiencing timed out errors when loading site?« on: May 17, 2024, 19:50 »
Getting a Connection Timed Out error quite regularly. I figure sometimes it might be my internet connection but other times the connection is fine and all other sites load without delay. Anyone else getting connection timed out errors?

Pond5 / Pond5 sales picking up in March 2024« on: March 20, 2024, 19:56 »
I'm seeing my Pond5 sales picking up really well this month. Anyone else having similar results?
Really good to see this with various problems and slowing sales on some other agencies in recent months. Hopefully will see continued sustainable lift in sales on Pond5. 14
Shutterstock.com / What will you do with your port when this arrives?« on: March 10, 2024, 04:20 »
Was going to say this is a hypothetical but the way things are heading it might not be too far off.
So you once made hundreds or thousands of dollars each month on Shutterstock but now making $100 a month is an exceptionally good month. Yet Shutterstock still reports huge profits - by far the main coming from its data licensing program and AI generations. You can opt out but can you really trust that? What will you do with your portfolio? 1) Nothing, will continue to upload like I've always done. 2) Keep it up but no longer upload. 3) Disable the port. 4) Close the account. 15

iStockPhoto.com / August 2023 statements are in early« on: September 15, 2023, 20:13 »
Went to look at content statistics and nothing there so figure to check royalties and August is there already. Not a bad or great month, pretty average as per the chart....

iStockPhoto.com / July 2023 financial statements are in« on: August 15, 2023, 16:32 »
Overall good month, my best month ever on iStock to date beating my previous BME in March 2023 by 78 cents (aka 0.78$)

iStockPhoto.com / May 2023 Earnings« on: June 15, 2023, 17:03 »
Well that's an early arrival. Second best month with an RPD of $2.08 for photos and video combined.
Considering about 112 video licences sold in May (and 30+ images) it's really not a great result overall. Would think video sales would bring up the RPD more. 19
iStockPhoto.com / February 2023 Earnings Statement« on: March 20, 2023, 13:22 »
A BME in February 2023 with an RPD of $2.46 for stills and video combined. Just as well given a very slow month everywhere else in March so far for mine.

iStockPhoto.com / January 2023 earnings statement« on: February 17, 2023, 15:32 »
A BME in January 2023 with an RPD of $2.49 for images and video combined.

iStockPhoto.com / November earnings statement are in« on: December 16, 2022, 14:09 »
Fourth best month overall with $1.69 RPD for photos and video combined. This is a lower RPD compared to recent months. So not a bad month but not great either.

Pond5 / Reported sale outside of usual reporting cycle« on: December 06, 2022, 15:27 »
My Pond5 sales always report once a day at 10.39am AEST or 11.39am AEDT. However, for the first time I've seen a sale dropped in at 1.45 am AEDT. Not complaining, it's just unusual. Maybe all my customers are typically from my area of the world so sales always happen within the usual hours in the reporting cycle. And the commission was pretty good at $58.86. Anyone else have sales report more than once a day?

iStockPhoto.com / September sales statement in« on: October 19, 2022, 17:56 »
Second best month but RPD down to $1.63 in September vs $2.97 in August (which incidentally was my BME on iStock).

iStockPhoto.com / May statements are in« on: June 17, 2022, 03:16 »
While my earnings were a tad over double the earnings in April, and over 12x that of May 2021, the downloads report suggested it would of been much more. Even so, May 2022 is my 4th best earnings overall on iStock.
