Shutterstock.com / Re: 10 cent SODs?
« on: January 26, 2022, 11:22 »
If they are old images that haven't sold before, they may be part of the deal that Sstock did quite a while ago, where all those unused old images are put into a 'pool' and the users have unlimited access.
It's not that.  Some of these images are relatively new, and others have sold several times previously.
There was talk years ago about sub rates for SODs as part of a deal with Facebook.  Maybe this is a new deal.

Have you seen an increase in 10 cent sales under the SOD category?  I've had five single and other category sales for 10 cents this month.  I have not seen that before.  Something new this year? What's with that?

I've had 5 custom 33 cent sales in January.

Not half, but definitely down.  Last year about 230/mo slowly declining to now about 160/mo.  SS is now my worst performer.

These are gross earnings, I presume, right?

I assume these are download numbers. At least that's what the thread is about...?
Yes, download numbers per month.  Very low for more than 12,000 images, but there you go.
By "worst performer", there I meant net income.

Sales at SS are 1/3 of those at AS this month, even with fewer images at AS.  Going back to level 1 doesn't explain this.  AS is even beating Alamy so far this month.

108
Things are very slow for me at SS.  So far only $7.  At AS I'm at $25, at Alamy $33 net.

I didn't notice that there were three pages of sales (never happened before for a month).  So that's 83 sales for four cents each.  Wow.

My sales have ceased going on a whole week at Adobe.  Anyone else notice the difference in their sales?  Thanks
Good month so far for AS.  Over $100 compared to the same from Alamy and half that for SS.  I haven't been adding much lately.

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy DACS
« on: November 04, 2021, 17:08 »
I got 3 listed, Does anyone know if Alamy is taking 60% of DACS that they collect now?  If so I should figure out how to apply for it myself, for 3 figures I can spend a few hours applying.

"Q. I dont understand clause 28 of the contract
A. This clause confirms we can claim a share of royalties for secondary uses of your images from collecting societies such as DACS. We will pay you a 50% share of these royalties after recouping our administration charges of around 1 per claim."

From https://www.alamy.com/contributor/faqs/most-frequently-asked-questions/?section=9

I had taken this to mean 1 pound per person per year.  Not 1 pound for every usage.  That would seem crazy expensive to me.
I got $16 for DACS TV usage which I don't claim directly because Alamy has this info.  I can't get it here in Canada.  I too got about $550 for the rest, so it is definitely worth your while to claim yourself.  But I think it may be too late for you. Once Alamy claims for you your stuck and can't back out anymore.

112
Yeah, that is not what one would normally call a review.

From my perspective, Alamy has both pros and cons, which I won't go over.  I've been there since 2006.  I joined SS and AS two years ago with the same portfolio.  While Alamy does remain my highest earner of the three, it's pretty close.  AS is next highest with only 9000 rather than 12000 images.  SS has been falling off and is the least profitable.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Current photo/art project?
« on: October 26, 2021, 08:22 »
To fill a gap in our powder room, I just finished two abstract impressionist acrylic paintings (my first).  I had such fun, and they turned out so well, I think I'll keep going.  I have more ideas.  At some point I'll have to photograph everything.

114
I say by all means let AS give your images away for free.  AS think it's cheap advertising, and I can't argue.  If it brings in more paying customers for the rest of us.... hooray!
But as for me, I will not give away my images, either here or at SS.

115
Shutterstock pay upfront also, I was offered just under $2000 for around 1000 of my images. I declined as the difference with Shutterstock is you give them away FOREVER not just the 12 months Adobe offer. Shutterstock also choose the images.

It seems you missed the part where you signed a NDA that legally forbids you to talk about this.  ???

I'm glad he did. Now some of us who didn't receive this "exciting" email know what it is. Something SS wants to keep under wraps and makes it look much poorer and shadier in comparison to other agencies who are at least more honest and upfront about making such deals.

If I were SS, I'd be embarrassed to offer their kind of "deal" too.  With the secrecy, they are more likely to suck in more victims.

I have a few questions.

I had 1219 downloads last year and I got an e-mail saying I got more than 150 downloads and can pick one app.  Is that right?  I would only be interested in CC photoshop anyway.

I now have CC 2015 and am hesitating about going to the cloud for photoshop.  Can I still have the NIK add-ons?  Can I keep my permanent CC 2015 on my computer while trying out the cloud version?

Any help and advice appreciated.

Adobe Stock / Re: Best keyword strategy in Adobe stock
« on: December 21, 2020, 13:47 »
Mat, you appear to be saying that any keyword in the top 10 has the same weight.  Given the color coding, I would have thought the first 5 are weighted in order of appearance, the next 5 are all the same weight, but lower than 1-5, and the keywords after 10 have a lower weight than that.
Since Pete is correct, you are saying that:
dog, poodle, running, chase, winter, snow, ball, pet, black, basketball
will give the same search result as:
basketball, black, pet, ball, snow, winter, chase, running, poodle, dog.

Please tell me that is not so.  I just finished annotating my 8800 images so it is too late for me.  But it would be good to know going forward.

As far as I know, the first word has more weight than the second which has more weight than the third, etc. The top ten in general have the most impact. As a best practice, I list the most important/relevant keyword first and do my best to keep all relevant keywords in the top ten. You really don't need much more than 15-25 keywords tops per asset.

-Mat

OK, good.  That is what I thought too.  I spent a lot of effort getting the top 10 keywords in priority order, rather than, for example, the supertag designation that Alamy provides for 10 keywords in any order.

The post selection image edit function is back to "normal" so that one can move keywords again.  I guess someone is fiddling with the code.

The UI for ordering keywords post acceptance just got worse.  Now the MOVE function no longer works.  I can only jump a keyword to the top of the list.  Argh!
Is AS trying to make annotation more difficult?  Help.

It works with some browsers and not with some others.
This demonstrates how the site is badly developed
(A well developed site should work well on all platforms and with any browser)

I don't think that's it.  Both Firefox and Chrome no longer allow moving keywords.  AS broke something, but as Matt says: they're not too interested in making it easier to make edits after acceptance.

I agree Mat, it is a bad workflow.  Going forward, I am ensuring that key keywords appear in the top ten.
But I'm still uploading years worth of work from the past.  Since I'm mostly an editorial shooter, about 30% of my stuff is rejected.  I have thousands more images to work through. I find re-ordering the top 10 keywords the most excruciating work compared to any other site's annotation method.  Just saying.

BTW, I came across this copy/paste "feature" in the editing pane when I accidentally overwrote keywords of another image while not paying attention.  I'm sure this feature was in fact a bug, but I've found it to speed my annotation considerably.  This was one bug that could have been left alone.

That is a useful video Mat.  But that's not useful for me.  I don't pick my 10 top keywords until the image is approved.  Why waste time if the image is rejected, right?
So I'm talking about editing the keywords after approval.  And for that, the UI is awful.  You can't see all the keywords so shuffling them around is a real pain.  If I have a similar image series, there is no way (now) to copy and paste.
Making the editing box full screen so we can see all keywords would go a long way to making this less painful.

Unfortunately, this update has removed the ability to copy keywords from one image to another.  Before, if I made just one change to an image's keywords and then clicked the next image, I could just hit save and I'm done.
No cutting and pasting like this any more.  Shame.
