This is the most honest email I've received from an agency in a long time.

Is this a sign of the upload veto many people are enforcing is working? I know I haven't uploaded anything since D-day and the whole google mess.

Alamy.com / Re: new forum at Alamy...
« on: April 22, 2013, 16:14 »
I'd only ventured over there a few times but never found it to be my cup of tea. (I can only handle one lot of edgy, opinionated, bossy creatives, and here they at least like microstock).

I do love this quote from Alamy Admins:
Quote
With this in mind, we've now made it compulsory to be a registered Alamy photographer before you can post. Although you'll be able to pick a forum alias the first time you log in, you'll need to log in using your existing Alamy website credentials and your profile on the new forum will contain a link to your image collection on Alamy. We believe this will promote a more honest and less hostile environment. Also, users are now able to give (or take away) reputation points on posts and users. Again, we hope this will promote a more positive and overall constructive place for discussion.

of course we all fear the backlash of speaking out (hello iS!), so having some anonymity can be helpful, but I do think this transparency is a good thing overall.  There are quite a few mouthy types here who like to whinge, yet I've no idea if it's justified as i can't see their ports.

perhaps a "show me yours, i'll show you mine" policy could be implemented? :)

Thanks for the encouragement Gillian. :)

James Allsworth,
Alamy.
yikes James! how Big Brother of you, 5 mins...............  :P
but otherwise, my pleasure. we should all be here to support and help and move onwards and upwards and all that. can't say i'll be over there much, as that RM crowd are a bit scary.

Perhaps he get's emails when someone starts a topic in the Alamy board...
Either way, thanks for the heads up.  It will be interesting to see if it cleans up the boards there.

Symbiostock - General / Re: Next Big Thing In Microstock? YOU
« on: April 21, 2013, 01:56 »
Its easy:

Anyone who wants to contribute articles can be set up as a "contributor". I'd give author priveleges, but that gives you access to some plugins which might be better left alone :D

After you write an article, it will be saved as a draft for me to follow up and assign it.

If you want to add your getting started article to something like a menu or dropdown, you need only tell me.

Other than that, just email me what your account is on Symbiostock.com and I'll change the role to contributor.

If you install a member's permissions plug in you can control which permissions you give to the authors so they can't mess with your plug ins. Perhaps you knew that already.. but just in case you hadn't seen that plug in.
Another option is to set up a Wiki which would be easier for people to modify and update and work on collectively.

I'd say it's more about you than the model.  If you have enough ideas you could go for a few hours.  If I am on location and shooting a theme I'll book each model for 3 hours and stagger them to make a 4 hour shoot.  If I was shooting a single model in a studio (something I almost never do) I'd probably book them for 2 hours.

Envato / Re: Weird image for Envato techjob recruitment?
« on: April 20, 2013, 16:03 »
I'd say it's a fun image showing a fun company to work with.  How many company CEO's would pose in an image like that??  I'm pretty sure the guy on the right is Collis, the CEO http://envato.com/

Sorry - I've fixed the double listing. Agreed - it will be interested to see how both sites perform.

Thanks for the updates Niakris.  I've been having problems getting image submissions at Veer to work.  Is anyone else having problems?

nice to see.  Very 'mature' of them.  I also see Easy Release on the list.. the iphone app release.

Stocksy / Re: What sort of RPI are you getting?
« on: April 16, 2013, 03:56 »
I would give them at least a year. I have a hard time to understand what are you fearing to loose the pictures are always yours if it doesn't work out like you had hoped you can delete your port and upload elsewhere, personally I will produce a lot stuff for Stocksy in the ciming weeks.

Yes, to be fair at least a year (or two) is needed to see how growth develops.  What I fear loosing.. simply lost income potential if I had put those images on sites that I know will sell.

I think there is only about 3 forum threads about FOAP.  I'll let it become a little more popular before adding a forum area.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: US ITIN Number for selling direct
« on: April 12, 2013, 14:29 »
If you live in Ireland and are selling direct then you have nothing to think about. They are coming to you - effectively to your shop in Ireland. The sale is taking place in Ireland and Irish rules apply. There is no requirement to pay 30% US tax or to have a US tax number - none of that.

You simply declare the income from the sale on your self assessment tax return.

US tax (the 30% thing, tax numbers etc) - that stuff is only applicable when an agency is based in the US. If they have supplied you with a form which has a box for a tax number - the correct thing to put in that box is "not applicable".

Ps - it's the same as you don't pay US tax when a client in the US buys one of your images from, say, Alamy. Or any other non US agent.

ditto on this.

Site Related / Re: Too Many SymbioStock Threads?
« on: April 11, 2013, 13:17 »
If people weren't interested in discussing Symbiostock there wouldn't be lots of threads at the top.  If I felt there were to many dominating the front page I could remove those boards from appearing on the front page - I've not done so as I feel it is easier to let people decide for themselves what they want to show on the front page.

Stocksy / Re: What sort of RPI are you getting?
« on: April 11, 2013, 05:40 »
A bit soon, don't you think?

Yeah, it is a bit soon.  I'm still curious how many sales people are getting - all things considered.

To be honest, perhaps I was hoping that Sean would spill his numbers :)  He has invested a lot of images in Stocksy and said he was getting a coupe of sales a day.  I was curious what sort of RPI that worked out to be.

I'm still having a hard time deciding which images to sift over to Stocksy and it is a tough decision how much to invest in it.  Should I put the latest shoot entirely on Stocksy and risk loosing $X because of it or should I just go with what I know and send the images to where I know I'll make money.  I'll probably do a bit of both but if Stocksy starts returning a reasonable RPI I'd be happy to send entire shoots their way.

Since Stocksy is image (and series) exclusive it limits a bit what can be sent where and makes it a bit harder to test the waters.

Stocksy / What sort of RPI are you getting?
« on: April 10, 2013, 16:21 »
I know stocksy is just out of the gates but it will be interesting to see this (hopefully) grow over time.

Right now I'm at a (monthly) RPI of 0 :)

Anyone else care to share.  I know some people are gathering a few sales... is it substantial? drops in the ocean??

Stocksy / Re: Any Sale?
« on: April 09, 2013, 16:08 »
Maybe Sean will create a multi-site deactivation script for you ;)

I was creating a link page with shortcuts to the deactivation on all the sites but you still need to know the image number which takes time to hunt down.

1020
as a hack you could do it in htaccess.
Whenever someone enters cheapvectors.com then could be sent to the web address you wished.  There are also wordpress plugins that will do redirects for you that might work.

Thank you all for the kind words and suggestions. Decisions, decisions! iStockphoto exclusive, many microstock sites, or Stocksy. Sounds like everyone is on the same page as far as moving to Micro, but then again this is a Micro forum.

Like I said in my first post I have 2300 images on a RM site. If anyone would be so kind to check it out and let me know where you think the best place for them would be. I'd like to be a bit stealthy here so the url is  http://goo.gl/dzcrC   if you search for pg_4254 you'll see all of my images there.

thanks again!

Don

Lots of great stuff there.  Is that the set you are only making $100/month from???  If so you could be doing a LOT better.  They should easily make over $1.00 per image per month as non-exclusive microstock.

you think? an image approved yesterday has sold twice already.
If it was only approved yesterday it was probably downloaded by someone searching 'newest first'

When looking the 'most popular' files in my port, they seemed to be flipping things around a little lately.  Last week it was heavily weighted towards new images.  This week it seems like the old good selling images are back to the top.  They must be tweaking things a bit on the back end

Stocksy / Re: Any Sale?
« on: April 03, 2013, 14:48 »
Has anyone got any sale to report from Stocksy? Their operations are in function now and it is live now. Some people have begun to report the initial status updates as they have uploaded the images there. I checked at least two. So far so good.

Is money coming? Is there any sale so far?

Yep, averaging several sales a day.  Some of them are conversions by me from people looking for images they had already planned on using.

Nice to hear.  iStock really put you in the perfect situation by terminating your account when they did.  I only have 30 images on the site.  I'd be happy to put in more but the work involved in deactivating the images on all the sites i contribute to simply isn't worth it.  I started deactivating 5 images for the site and after 2 hours of work I decided I should just focus on giving them some new content.
