It really makes me wonder why they are trying so hard to supress some groups and favor others.  I can't help but wonder if overall sales are down and the only way to disguise that fact from their top exclusive contributors is to slant the search heavily in their favor...

Any best match or any default search result at any site will favore some groups and prejudice others, I think this is easy to understand.
About overall sales... do the math, now the numbers are available. I don't see any sign of sales going down. Ath this has merit, considering the price increase.

Great at IS, Second BME, regular dl's and ELs, fantastic return per file uploaded.

One nice consequence of this best match is that difficults very much the "work" of a handful of contributors specialized in copying successful images/concepts, often down to the keywords, with the hope of having a best search psition than the original, and "get" its downloads.

Maybe you forget that IS raised prices... that counts for some of the possible lost downloads. That said, looking at income from last year and with a quite big portfolio, I have more than a 50% income growth this year with just a 30% portfolio gorwth, and a dillution of my percentage of images there.

I'm a full timer too - and let me tell you this...I'm glad I don't have all of my eggs in the same basket.  Month to month, your sales could fluctuate drastically when things like this happen.  Just last month I lost one of my largest referrals due to a "glitch" so my income will be $400 less than last month.  Thankfully that's not the only site I submit to.  I can also fall back on photo reviewing for extra income.

Referrals at IS pay just 10 $, not 400, and just one time.

On the other hand, this best match is givinvg me back the downloads I lost with other former BMs. Well, maybe some of us have also the rigth to have our turn.

One possibility would be that they redirect the url photos.com to istock.com, and leave StockXpert as now, but including one row or a side-show of istock exclusive content in the SPX search results.Another possibility for photos.com, would be leave it as before, a kind of dollar bin for fully or not fully owned content --quite outdated, after all what it was until one or two months ago--  although I don't think they will do that. I don't now, but I think that anything they do will be to reinforce istockphoto --and so exclusives--. After all, istock is the bussines which sells 70 million a year, I doubt that StockXpert results can approach to that.

It wouldn't be just the time... time itself, wouldn't mind anything if these years ago you were uploading few files, or if these files were no up to today's standard quality-commerciality. So, you'd have to adc quantity, commerciality and quality to time.

But I can be wrong, of course. That's just an hypotesys I've made  looking at the search results.

Actually, in my humble opinion, the new best match tends to favor more old-timers (people who has been on istock for three, four or more years --exclusive or not) than simply exclusives. If you are old timer and exclusive I suppose it's even better.

In my view, for various reasons, photos.com is more worthy than stockxpert.
I wish, too, that Getty puts a end to the free collection stockechange.

A press release just sent out today

Quote
Pixmac Celebrates 1 000 000 Picture Milestone

October 21, 2008 - Prague, Czech Republic - Pixmac, the sharpshooter among young microstock picture agencies, announces the reach of 1 000 000 picture Milestone. The content makes a unique collection of high quality life style pictures available on Pixmac exclusively. Beside this, the collection contains a broad range of pictures of different subjects.

[pixmac]

I don't understand... they get their pics from Fotolia (what probably mean that these pics are in many microsites besides of Fotolia) and they claim to offer all "exclusive content"? If that is rigth, this doesn't inspire trust at all.

Everybody with 500 dowloads can be exclusive and renounce to have benefits in about seven others microstock sites. Exclusiviness it's not anyone's privilege: it's a free and personal election.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Can inspections become more inane?
« on: October 17, 2008, 20:15 »
Although sometimes I've been tempted, I never have allowed myself to get mad at a rejection and try to charge it to the "inanity" of the inspector or to some dark conspiracy theory. IMHO taking a second look at the file and searching for what is worng or borderline has taugth me more than a year in an photgraphy school. Now and then, in rare ocasions, I haven't been able to find the supposed flaw, but a system where humans inspects 60.000 or so images at week, sporadic human errors are inevitable, and that's what resubmission and Scout are for.

If you don't want to be copied, you are in the wrong business ...

Yes, but keep in mind that, although  with discretion and behind the scenes, there has been images deleted and contributors banned from sites for this motive.

I don't know how Lisa works (I think she has a blog where she talks about it) but, do you really compare a now and then little help from your couple, or hiring a make-up or a stylist for a particular session with a pre-production, production and post-production professional payed team???

Great for him, but maybe it's no fair compare him with hidesy, that works on her own. As he often explains, Yuri works with a team of five, or seven, or I don't-know how many people team. That's ok, but it's a production force, not just an individual contributor. They play in another league.

Was wondering the other day if I like all those publicly available stats.

People claiming to be targets for ripoffs are themselves getting inspiration from others.
I'd like to see public sale stats at SS too.

That's not true. There are lots of people that strive to do orginal work, and some people that rips off, and never from non selling contributor/images. Always from good selling ones, down to the concept, the ligthing and even the keywords. I could provide scores of blatant examples, but, obviusly, I won't do it.
To say "everybody does" seems a first step to justify doing it oneself.

1045
Another maybe marginal but important factor is results when the customer uses a non-englisgh language version. In this aspect, with all it's flaws, I consider Istock the best by far, because of the CV.

1046
Best... for who? The Best results for a buyer rarely are the best results from a seller point of view. So, I've voted as a buyer.

1047
Maybe it's too easy for non-exclusives, when seeing a drop in sales blame it too best match exclusives favouristism. There are non exclusives reporting better sales and some exclusives reporting a fall. While I think that exclusives deserve a help in best match placement, there are many other factors. Size, for instance. Or upload date, even stronger. Of my 200 firts best match results for my follder about 190 are pics uploaded in 2008.

Anyway, they have said in the forums that they will change the best match again, so...

Cutcaster / Re: Cutcaster sales/payout/photo quality
« on: October 09, 2008, 18:15 »
After visiting the page.

What I like from Cutcaster: they sell for decent prices and they offer good comisions.

What I don't like: That "free section for rejected files" that reminds me of something similar that failed in Fotolia. So many free and searchable files a month for customer, even if dubious rejected stuff can be a magnet dor the kind of customers... that don't want to pay and thhat will very rarely buy regular stuff.

I'm not going to upload there, but, well, I wish you good luck.

For me, a little bit slower, on pair with september  for dl's; some or even better percentage of large files and xl than before.

Well, some photos I've resubmitted (not at FT, I'm not there), have ended being very big sellers. So, if the pic has a potential, I believe that is worth resubmitting.
