BOT inspection completely take the art & creativity out of photography.
but microstock is not exactly art or creative photography, mantis!!!
also, the day ss abolished the 7/10 application submission , we already know it has nothing to do with quality or acceptability. oh, and the lowering of payout to 35 bucks, we know gone are the days of higher earnings.
My point was that setting up a shot like this, for example, can be easily rejected when it is in fact commercially viable and somewhat creative. I picked this particular image because it has shallow DOF and is one of my best sellers. Granted I got this in before the BOTS, but I bet it would get rejected with a BOT today. SS misses out and so do I. I think I have 300-400 DL's on this one.

Why ss when they pay a bigger percentage than istock and more for sub sales than thinkstock? Makes no sense to me.
They have held prices down to a ridiculous level for far too long. (I accept I'm in the minority with this view.)
Honestly I don't think anyone has done more to lower prices and keep them down than Getty/ IStock.
They left the door open to start with by squeezing contributors till the pips squeak in terms of rates then when they jumped into subs with both feet again paid out the very minimum.
I think I should have phrased it "why Shutterstock OVER IStock" as I can see where you're coming from with SS being the original subs site. If you accept subs as now a given, then SS treats contributors much better than IS, and even given the current spate of F-ups has been much more competent at running their business.
They could be the next to close their doors if the two law suits against them are lost. Could be a lot closer that we think. Even if they settle, it would probably be for a lot of money and would also further damage their "brand" in the eyes of their customers.

This may be inappropriate to ask, but what kind of daily income do you get from 200-300 daily sales at SS? I know 9000 is alot of images, but if you make a living with your port, that's a great motivator for the rest of us. thanks
Know a guy with 10,000 images and he makes $800 a month. 200-300 daily would be significantly more assuming similar od and sod composition. I'd guess 3500-4000 a month

Any chance there's a way we can download our own files?
Hard drive died.
Probably late to the game here but pond 5 has a way for you to download your own files and you don't have to contact them. The feature is already there.

All of that info should be put in the meta data fields within the image. Are you using photoshop or another Adobe software?
Yes, I'm using Lightroom 6. Most of the Metadata that I input was before I realized that some of the stock sites would pre-load fields using metadata (which is nice). I will be changing my application of metadata accordingly.
My main question is the practical difference between title and description in regard to Dreamstime. How do you approach it?
Thanks!
I don't know of any agency that does not read metadata. Get that discipline going and you should be fine.

Do you contribute to film supply.com? I was browsing their collection and they have some nice stuff.

So much for supporting Fotolia, I mean Adobe Stock.

You can have all the personal taste and expertise .... but the true talent is knowing what buyers at companies and ad agencies are looking for. Stocksy has its finger on this vibe and has the results to prove it.
I highly doubt that these videos we are discussing have any serious commercial appeal. They are from existing members and more than likely not curated. I would agree that actual curated footage by seasoned Stocksy reviewers would be more aligned with commercial appeal, but these seem like someone just slid them in for the sake of sliding them in. Any video of any kind can appeal to someone at some time for some reason, so where does it stop? I'm being sincere here. About anyone and their mother can shoot this type of work.

Use MPEG Streamclip, it's free and you can downsize your 4K to HD.

Are we in the stock photography business or writing?
If i have to write to sell more photos i would think...what am i doing?
Like go swimming to be able to dance??
Calm down If you have heartburn take some Alka Seltzer it can help...
____ I have been told that on some microstock sites the fact to participate actively to the forum can push your rank up. I don't know if it is true. For this reason I was wondering if the fact to write in the Dreamstime blog could have a similar effect.
____ "Are we in the stock photography business or writing? " "If i have to write to sell more photos i would think...what am i doing? " So I wonder why you are writing on a microstock forum where you can find useful answers and advices to help you to sell better
"Like go swimming to be able to dance??" The fact to practice a sport or to have a regular physical activity helps to keep your body in good shape. Having a body in good shape is very helpful to practice any other physical activity. So yes swimming can help you to dance better.
(You see, I answer to you questions with answers, not with questions as you do)
Honestly, the reality is that many of us are willing to try anything reasonable to grow revenue and in some cases we've been conditioned to do so. Look at FAA. Supposedly if you participate in forums and post and like and blog and whatever, you get favorable placement. I haven't done it but I wouldn't scorn anyone for trying.

This is the mindset many buyers have now. They are conditioned to spend next to nothing if they can get away with it. And they want a PSD file to boot. Going to have some coffee now and relax.

I'm pretty sure the difference between Adobe RGB and sRGB is negligible for 99.9% of all photographic applications, especially more so for microstock photography.
Yup.

You really want to set your camera to Adobe RGB shooting in Raw format and also the iMac. Don't know how involved you are in photography but most of us will calibrate our monitors with an external calibrator at least for professional use.
I too do it like gyllens said. Just want to add that I convert the images to sRGB at the end. All the shooting and editing is made in AdobeRGB and before saving to JPG at the end I convert to sRGB. The AdobeRGB color space represents a wider range of colors and sRGB is the standard in the web, devices and printers.
So if you convert to sRGB in the end what is the advantage of shooting in AdobeRBG as any advantage is then lost in the conversion to sRGB?
Any recommendations on a external calibrator for iMac Monitor?
I use Spyder software on my iMac. Also, Ken Rockwell has a very good piece on RGB v. SRGB http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/adobe-rgb.htm

I am in and most of my downloads are the distribution type, cheap. Last month I made $20. No regular downloads, just a hodgepodge of "additional revenue". The month prior I made $250 ($500 before my cut) and the month before about the same. Alamay is very cyclic in terms of sales. They are NOT consistent but good when they do sell regular assets. As far as the additional revenue opportunities go, they won't amount to too much.

I have noticed a few inconsistencies on their site, I even got over-credited once. I sent them a quick email and the reply was fast and friendly. Sure they arent a steady seller like SS but they have always been friendly and open as far as I can tell. If you have an issue why not ask them directly?
Agree with you. Very good response times and some posts in here.

I'm not going to delete anything from there for now since I got some nice 4k sales . It's just weird that there are my files in most downloaded search results that I've never sold on VB. I thought that maybe somebody else had similar situation and maybe it's just their website algorithm makes false results.
I'm on a cycle as I've said a few times before in other threads. In July I had a 10-12 video run on VB, then nothing in August and so far nothing in Sept. This scenario is not a one time occurrence. It happens over and over again. 10-12 sales in a month, then no sales for the two following months, then 10-12 sales again the next month. It's happened since I joined when they started up.

Last January I logged in when doing my taxes and was shocked to see that IO had $620 in there. This thread made me go look again but I only have about $200 in there for 2016. I'm just letting it ride until it all vanishes.

Right, I think I get it. In the UK you just report what you report, no questions asked. Well, you'll sometimes get audited to check you're not making stuff up and you actually have documented evidence of your income... but it sounds like in the US, everything has to be accounted for. I.e. they match the incomings of one party with the outgoings of another.
I guess it makes sense from a balancing the books kind of thing.
It must get complicated though... I mean how far down does it go? If I have a receipt for a bunch of champagne for entertaining clients, will they then check with the nightclub's tax returns to make sure those bottles were sold at the price I have on the receipt and that the club are paying the right tax on them? Sounds a bit of a pain.
Unless there is major bucks involved, they are just verifying your receipts. I just got audited last week and lost. A 1099 was updated by an agency a while back but they never sent me the new one. I had to pay 1100 in additional taxes and penalty and interest. This is why the envanto thing is so messed up. The 1099 and the "I wanna have my cake and eat it too" accounting system they have is probably illegal.

I've read every single thread on the forums, and asked the same questions there that I'm asking here, and I still can't get a straight answer on how a company claiming that they do or don't do something has any bearing on my obligations as a tax payer. I must be missing something.
I earn X so I report X which means I have to pay X. Why would that be different with Envato as opposed Shutterstock or Fotolia or Pond5, for example?
I believe it's the inconvenience of how they report income. They report the whole sale and you have to then deduct their "fee"on your taxes. Thus you get 1099'd on a fake amount and have to adjust for it on your taxes. And by the way, they claim to be a marketplace and not an agent. They take a fee but act as an agency. Crooked.

I guess the main reason is we are all making too much content too fast and dividing almost the same pie for growing number of contributors The number of big and medium producers who can afford $79 for HD is unlikely growing accordingly. Videohive may be a some sort of solution. I noticed there were sales from the countries which never appeared on my Shutterstock sales map (China, Russia) and the typical buyer profile there is surely different.
I will never sell anything at Videohive. It's too dirt cheap!! It's horrible for contributors!!
So if you got loads of sales and made about $2K a month there, that would be really horrible?
Yes, it is very horrible. People now can buy the same clips for $10 instead of $70+. It's bad. Simple math.
So it's only the price your works sells for that's important to you? The volume of sales doesn't matter as long as they sell for a high price?
It's obviously both we want. But price erosion is what brought micro stock down to its knees for suppliers. Now we are having the same discussions for video, some embracing cheap seat prices and others wanting to sustain fair prices. In the longer term (maybe a few years) we will then be seeing similar shenanigans on sub pricing, cheap bundles, further commission erosion, less quality content (need I say 50,000 videos of someone smoking pot), a race for more volume, less quality just to keep up with the cuts agencies build into their models, to the point where video is now for those who only wish to make a few extra bucks a month, and those in countries where a small dollar amount is significant for them. The rest of those who are trying to make a living at it might as well go work at McDonalds to supplement their MS income. So I understand both points; yours is instant gratification and helloitsme is long term sustainability and steady income. All agencies are doing is competing by chopping pricing, it has nothing to do with people paying $79 for HD. Bloggers and such don't need $79 HD, they can pay much less for a web version, so that argument is noted at best. Where in all of this discussion is the quality of ones work addressed? There seems to be a tone that content does not matter, only price. That is short sighted thinking. I'm with helloitsme, I won't upload to VH.

Making my month now requires multiple big SOD's and video sales. Overall number of downloads is way down, OD's are down, the whole tamale. This has been generally going on for the last year. Monthly swings can be as much as $500 for me on SS.
As a general statement, this whole industry is on the back side of the S-curve for contributors and those same agencies have figured out how to squeeze so much out of the contributor that they have demotivated many of us from taking the time and making the effort to shoot creative content. I have not set up my studio for still work for two years. I have zip motivation. I've been thinking of shooting more in the RM area but that kind of work takes a long time to sell and is not consistent income. So I have been focusing on video and animations. Even still, that is hard to make up for the losses from images if you aren't edging on pro-level content or niche.
