I came across a neat product called CamRanger (http://www.camranger.com) that connects to your camera with the normal USB connection and then creates a WiFi hotspot of its own. Your iPad (or laptop) can then log onto the wifi hotspot and get the live view, capture images, do focus stacking, do time lapse, HDR bracketing etc. It is sold from their site at $299 and I was sorely tempted (just because it was really well constructed and I was impressed by the knowledge of the inventor/CEO when he demo'd it to me.)
If anyone has one, let me know what you think! Steve 1129

I'm a strong proponent of spreading your images around many sites. Although it is hard to spot direct cause and effect, I have continued to grow my revenue at the big sites (and maintain a similar amount of earnings per online file) even though I have added smaller sites during the past 2 years. I publish my earnings each month on my blog and I did a big analysis of 2012 performance in early January. I think that analysis of earnings per file does demonstrate that adding images to new sites doesn't much impact earnings of the initial ones. It is also hard to predict which file sell on which sites - my best seller on Shutterstock, is not a great seller on Dreamstime, say, and vice versa. Steve 1130
Print on Demand Forum / Re: FAA - The Largest Art Site in the World?« on: February 04, 2013, 13:13 »Quote I've been in FAA since August 2011 with a payed account and now have 600+ images there, the best of my microstock portfolio. It's very easy to upload, the system reads iptc metadata, so all keywords and descriptions already in the images are utilized. I have very decent sales and receive monthly payouts of several hundred $$ with no marketing at all, other than post a recent sale in FB every now and then. I'm not active in their forums and I don't comment much on other artists images. Carlos - some great images there - and a very interesting blog - I love the way you composite different parts together to get a striking image! I'm new on FAA with my artist site and I've loaded it up with a collection of my photos - would you mind sharing what sort of images sell as prints from your portfolio? General Stock Discussion / Re: Microstock Earnings Thread Jan. 2013« on: February 01, 2013, 20:06 »Quote steheap Yes, but I choose sites at the bottom of the list that are very low maintenance. I use Lightburner to upload to all sites in parallel, which gets the images there. Most of them either require no action, or maybe a visit to the site to move them from import to acceptance. So I probably spend a total of an hour a month on that set of sites. My view is that each one may earn $10 a month, but over time, that adds up and I do get payouts from them. I also count Zazzle in my earnings, which isn't really a stock site, and PrintBusinessCards where I have stopped uploading, but still get occasional sales. steve 1133

A pretty good month for me - not the best ever, but a big step up from my $1735 in December to $2180 in January. It was a slow start, but then each site seems to have given me some solid sales, with 123RF doing particularly well (although I have a great referral person who must be doing fantastically on that site!) . Here is my normal graph showing the growth over the past 2 years:
![]() As a change this month, I decided to work out the percentage of earnings that came from each site during the past 13 months. Of course SS is the clear winner in consistent sales, but it is interesting to see how some of the smaller sites can add up to a reasonable amount of my monthly income: ![]() As usual, more details on my blog at: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2013/02/earnings-from-stock-photography-january-2013/ Steve 1134
Cameras / Lenses / Re: Searching for a shirt-pocket RAW camera and STOCK quality sensor/lens« on: January 31, 2013, 10:21 »
I use the Canon G1x. It has an APS-C sensor, has Raw, and has a fixed zoom lens that is reasonably wide but isn't as telephoto as I would really like. However, it takes great images and the fixed lens means that you can't get dust into the body and onto the sensor. I always carry it in my car so that if a stock opportunity appears, I can take it with a great camera.

I think you can upsize a little (although I haven't done that yet). As far as I can tell, the sales come because of interest in your images - I had one sale as a free member, but none so far as a paid member.
I think I will have to revisit my pricing though - perhaps too high! Steve 1136
Print on Demand Forum / Re: FAA - The Largest Art Site in the World?« on: January 28, 2013, 13:28 »
Nice image!
Your prices are quite a bit lower than I have set up in my account. Do any of us know the willingness of FineArtAmerica buyers to pay the pricing that we discussed earlier in this thread? I think the idea was to go up to $225 plus the actual cost of the printing. Maybe if I reduced my pricing I would get a sale! Steve 1137

"buy artist prints" seems to be the best one I've found - 3000 impressions and 8 clicks on my ad (which is a lot more specific to what I have on offer.)

An update. My keywords were of very low search volume and so I was not getting many impressions (ie they were rarely coming up) and zero clicks. I added a new set of keywords: "buy artist prints" which is much more popular in searches and so I got 1600 impressions and 4 clicks at 60c each. No purchases, but presumably among the 1600 people who presumably saw my little ad, 4 of them were tempted to buy prints of Kauai (but not mine

It is set automatically to some extent. I have set the maximum I am willing to pay at $1 with a $10 budget per day. Then Google looks at other people with similar keywords and how much they are willing to pay, and through some magic, decide how much my clicks cost based on where I appear in the search results. I'm not an expert, but it seems that as long as I get appropriate clicks (and I get some sales), then I don't need to pay more than my max of $1.

Print on Demand Forum / Re: Google Adwords campaing and Fine Art America« on: January 15, 2013, 09:16 »
No - it is more to do with the popularity of the search - the more popular a search (eg "mortgages") the more people are willing to pay to get an advert on the first page of the search results. With my lowly search terms, I don't have to pay much to be noticed

So far, 50 impressions and 1 click for $0.65 and no sales!
I had it worldwide, but changed this morning to US and Canada. I'm sure you are right about the audience for these prints. I think my ad makes it clear that I am selling prints of Kauai, so I haven't been too restrictive on keywords I don't want. Print on Demand Forum / Re: Google Adwords campaing and Fine Art America« on: January 14, 2013, 18:54 »
I think you need to think about the keywords someone would search on. You need someone who has decided to buy a print of Paris for their wall. Hence, "buy" may be important as a keyword. Not sure about "canvas" - that could narrow it, but it is also specific to a type of print. I've never bought a print so I'm not the best person to ask, but I wonder if "beautiful" may fit in there, or panorama for a specific orientation?
I'll waste some money with Google tonight to see if I can get a sale on Kauai prints! It is sometimes better to get customer when they have had a drink in the evening! ![]() Let you know tomorrow! Steve 1148

I've used Google adwords to promote my eBook about stock, and I can get a reasonable traction for $10 a day - paying maybe 80c per click. Doesn't always convert to a purchase though - sometimes it can be a very low success rate. However, that use is pretty straightforward - I can create an ad that specifically identifies what is on offer - ie a book about stock photography. The issue with FAA is that you don't want generic views from members of the public that see the ad and think - I wonder what that is. You need people who have some level of motivation to buy your specific prints - not any prints, but yours specifically. Hence, your targeting needs to be really tight, and then I'm not sure how well it would find the right people. You could certainly try a very specific set of keywords - such as "buy print grand arche paris" and see what traction you get. I doubt if that sort of detailed ad is very expensive per click, and hence it could be worth trying. I'll think about it as well and maybe try a specific link to one of my galleries. Another idea I thought about was that we could designate a day where the members of this forum (when not consumed by Getty as at present!) would visit one members site and click on/comment on images they like. That may put you higher up the visibility levels among viewers of the site - especially the comments. Steve PS - my FAA is http://steven-heap.artistwebsites.com/index.html 1149
Adobe Stock / Re: Is FT rejecting everything?« on: January 14, 2013, 12:19 »
I've just submitted 171 images (admittedly I had waited a bit to get round to their keywording and category input) and I got 31 accepted (16%). That is pretty good for me! They seem to reject almost all travel and location shots and accept studio/isolation shots, but, funnily enough, my sales on Fotolia are generally in the travel category!
I sometimes wonder why I bother with new upload to them! Steve 1150
