.. This month they have died completely - only one sale for $.25. ..

Alas, you are not alone. Rather interesting sales graphs and stats have been posted at http://www.canstockphoto.com/forum_read.php?id=6054

I had not seen that - thanks for posting.  My graph would be very similar - steady for the past few months with a huge drop this month.

My RPD at iS last month ended up at $0.51, not much higher than SS ($0.45), 123 ($0.47) and FT ($0.48).  April was the first time for PP sales to be more than regular iS sales ever.  This month iS has tanked further so it probably will be the norm from here on out.  Too bad.  I liked the days when iS was at the top and paid well.

Every batch I've submitted there all year has been reviewed within a day, including a batch submitted yesterday that is online this morning.  For you it must be a release thing as suggested by Poncke?

The problem I'm having there is that sales have dried up almost completely - one sale this month for 25c.  They have always had a large variance but not this low - this is the worst in more than 3 years since I started with them.  Hope it is just a statistical anomaly and not a long-term trend.

For anyone who has a similar port size on the other top 4 sites, 123 is unlikely to compare well given the low prices and where there is not volume or occasional SOD / EL type sale to bring them up.  Possibly viable for those with several thousand images who get 50% commissions or those with lots of rejections on top 4 and benefit because even a bad market is better than no market.

Excellent summation.

DT also is very variable in sales with huge swings from month to month, presumably due to changes in best match placement.  Last month I had a BME there, this month is looking to be the worst in about a year at about one-tenth of last month's earnings.  I'm sure others who were low last month are now having BMEs.  You need a few months at least to gauge sales there.

I used to really like 123 and they had a lot of positive buzz before the commission cuts.  They were my #4 for total earnings.  So far this year I have made less every month than the month before and this month is abysmal.  Almost all subs sales and not a ton of those.  For this year so far they are #5 for total earnings and may drop to #6 behind CanStock (although CS has died this month as well).  I'm glad you're doing well but for me they have dropped a lot and I can't get enthusiastic about continued uploading with the low prices and low royalty rates.

For me so far this year I have been getting an OD about every 11-20 DLs, depending on the month.  This month it is the slowest at one OD per every 25 DLs.  So 80 DLs with no ODs is very unusual in my experience.  However, it is probably just statistical variation in a small port - just keep uploading and the ODs will come.

Wow, that is incredible!  Must be HDR time lapse- wonder how many individual images were involved?

General Photography Discussion / Re: Stacked Macro Images
« on: May 15, 2013, 22:41 »
I use Helicon for the same reason mentioned above - it will take raws but Zerene does not AFAIK.  Helicon also is quite fast while Zerene took forever on my Mac - might work better with a PC.  Helicon does make mistakes that have to be cleaned up but basically eliminates focus rejections, although it can take a lot of time.  I use PS CS4 and Helicon is better - might not need it with CS6.  I don't usually stack a ton of images - not worth it for microstock.  From the example you posted, it looks like you know what you are doing already.

Has anybody used the Stackshot system (http://www.cognisys-inc.com/stackshot/stackshot.php)?  It looks like a cool toy and I really want one but can't justify the price for microstock.  If it will make a great improvement I'll try to talk myself into spending the money so if anyone has used it and thinks it's a good investment please let me know.

They've been a decent seller for me.  Lifetime RPDL is $1.41.  I love those $19.80 distribution sales and the occasional $25 EL.  But they are very inconsistent with the largest variance in sales.  This month they have died completely - only one sale for $.25.  In the past I have had several months of low sales followed by several months when it picks up.  Not sure if it is changes in their search algorithm or just statistical variation in a low-earning site, but I hope this month's trend doesn't last long.  Their easy, fast review process coupled with a high AR keeps them in the rotation through the low-selling times.

There have been a couple of negative comments but nothing backed up with actual statistics.  I have the 10-22 and the 17-55 S series lenses and both are quite sharp, particularly the 17-55.  In an independent review it was rated better than the two lenses you mentioned in the OP.  See here (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-17-55mm-f-2.8-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx) for a review plus additional links to the other lenses.  Unfortunately he doesn't compare them to other manufacturers such as Tokina or Sigma.  The problem I have had with the 17-55 is that CA is often pretty bad so it takes another step or two to clean it up in PS, but it is very sharp.  Good luck with your decision!

General Stock Discussion / Re: What happened?
« on: May 09, 2013, 10:45 »
I don't know but sales seem to be off across all sites this month and beginning the last few days of April.  Whatever happened it's wiping me out - I'm on pace to have my worst month in over a year.  Even SS is down, iS and CS are very slow and so far nothing on DT - can't remember ever going so long on DT without a sale.  Whatever happened I hope it is corrected soon.

I agree with the others about the lighting and I also thought the composition could be improved.  Here's my version - tried to tone down the differences in lighting and cropped it so the subject is more prominent.

Over the past year my submissions to Alamy have taken 1-6 days to go through QC.  I didn't know the 30-day wait for failures, but just checked and the one time I had a rejection it was 30 days after the initial submission.  Unfortunately I submitted a couple more batches while waiting and of course they were failed too.  So I think if it goes more than a week then you'd better wait.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Wideangle for canon
« on: May 09, 2013, 09:29 »
How wide angle do you need?  With that camera you also can use EF-S lenses so you have a couple more options.  If you want super wide angle, you could get the EF-S 10-22 mm lens.  It's pretty sharp and is small and light weight if you need to carry it around.  Perfectly fine for stock - I use mine all the time.  That one gives a focal length equivalent to 16-35 mm on a full-frame camera and it's about the same price as the 17-40.  If you're shooting large subjects in tight spaces it's very helpful.  The other lenses you mentioned are equivalent to around 25 or 27 mm so not nearly as wide.  There also is the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 lens.  It is very sharp but has a problem with CA in my experience.  I use that one a lot too but have to pay special attention to remove fringing in PS.

I think the choice will depend on how it will be used.  If for travel then small and light weight may be issues - those are very important to me.  If you think you'll be doing a lot of hand-held shots in low light then f2.8 might be important.  For me I almost never shoot wide open so it is not such a big issue.  Good luck with your decision!

I suspect raises to contributors are a thing of the past (hope I'm wrong).  If you had bought shares when they first came out you would have more than doubled your money - it closed over $45 a share today, and you could have bought in at $21 or $22.  Raises to us would only lower profits and decrease the stock price.  Too bad they don't give contributors stock options...

1142
That is hilarious!

Yes, and the shareholders are getting it.

I've also sometimes had them take a couple of weeks to go through QC.  I submitted a batch on Monday and am still waiting so maybe they are just a little slower than usual.  Process some more while you're waiting - that's what I'm doing.

Might be a rogue reviewer.  My last batch was 100% accepted yesterday.  Maybe try resubmitting some of them and see what happens.

Thanks - I did not know about this.  Very few keywords seem to be important - 2 or 3 per image.  Very interesting and helpful.

CS2 works fine for me. I dont need fancy filters in new versions.

It all depends on your workflow, I suppose.   For me, Adobe always wins when I buy a new camera body and my older version of Camera RAW doesn't support the new RAW file.   Then I shake my fist in the air and yell "Adoooooobeeeeee!" in my best Captain Kirk.

(And, yes, I know I can use the software the comes in the camera to process RAW files, and that might even produce better results, but I don't want to add another step or more file types to my current process)
Why not just use the free Adobe DNG Converter?  It's easy to convert a folder of images.

That's what I do - put all new raws in a To Be Converted folder, open DNG Converter and convert them all with one click, then move them to my current work folder.  Fast and easy.  After that they will open up in ACR for white balance adjustments, etc.

That's a bummer.  I'm still using CS4 and was thinking of going to CS6.  Guess I'd better do it while I can - I don't do subscription programs.  Their pricing will make it a non-issue for me - 600 bucks a year, every year for PS?  I will have to find another program.  Too bad.

BME at DT - came in at #2, but might drop to #3 after iS PP sales come in next month.  Above average at CanStock and Veer.  All others below average.

SS still #1 but off for $$$ due to no ELs - worst month there since last August, although # of DLs was good.  iS had the worst month in a year for regular sales, but a BME for PP sales in March, many at higher values - none at $6 or $12 though, whew.  RPD at BS and 123 dropping with the introduction of subs and royalty cuts, respectively.

April has usually been a slow month and last year was the worst.  This year overall was up 78% over last April - hope it is the worst month this year as well.

BME. First time to clear over $1000.00. 516 files in portfolio.
I am shooting the wrong stuff.

DITTO Poncke! In total agreement!  ;)

I don't think it's the stuff he shoots but how he shoots it - have you taken a look at rimglow's portfolio?  Very simple isolations but beautifully executed - I'm not surprised he has such a high return.  Wish I knew how to make isolations like those - they are amazing.
