Do you sell many upsized images... on Alamy, because that's prohibited on microstock ? What I meant about dinosaur habit is the upsizing action, not shooting with a 11mpx camera

prohibited is such strong word. I sell upsized images in ALL markets.

Upsizing was used back when the best cameras were 6mpx. Dinosaur habit

I gotta laugh at this. Vonkara, you age yourself as way young. LOL. You see, upsizing is still going on. It was okay WAY back then (6-8 years), and is still okay now. Mainstream digital shooting didn't really hit until the 1Ds with 11MP, which upsized very nicely. I still sell ( and many others on this board) sell many images a month (upsized of course) from this dinosaur of a camera.

It's been like this for a long time. It was deemed that 50M at 8bits was the optimum size to offer long ago and only recently have cameras exceeded these resolutions plus files used to come from scans and 50M was the standard applied. It should be noted that a great effort was made to get the files clean at this resolution.

I've used 10, seems to to satisfy. Speeds up uploads by quite a bit.

General Macrostock / Re: Macrostock...hows it work for ya?
« on: November 25, 2009, 12:07 »
RM images are generally placed on an image exclusive basis, that is the whole idea behind RM, exclusivity,...to try and place those same, or similar, images on a micro site is not only irresponsible but also a potential breach of contract with the rm agency.

* sigh

If you upload the same stuff to an RM site, that you have on istock for 1/10th the price then no, it won't work for you, and you're also giving company 2 a bad name, since a client really doesn't want to pay out all that money, and then come across the same image on an rf site at a much cheaper price..

Pick a price for your individual and unique image, then go find the sites that reflect that price..

I would hope so, but then there are pricing discrepancies across the board for the same image, but the guys head is turned slightly to the left or whatever (it doesn't break the rules, but still why is the client paying extra $$ for something that is almost identical as another image in the photogs RF portfolio).. or if you make vectors, you would make a new one for RM, that in reality looks the exact same as what you already have on RF..

The image exclusive standard has been made a lot more flexible on RM in recent years..

A recent survey indicates that many clients want better service and are willing to pay for it. Hard to believe but not everyone has to have everything for a dollar. This alone justifies a much higher price. Usually if there is not a market for something at a particular price things won't sell for that price and no one will buy it. It has nothing to do with some client have bad feelings.

Zymmetrical.com / Re: Forced account termination
« on: November 23, 2009, 13:41 »
some people have been removed from sites in the past because they made comments they probably shouldn't of.

Famous american democracy!  :P

You do understand that it's only the various levels of governments that are democracies, right?  Neither democracy nor absolute (okay, near absolute) freedom of speech apply to corporations.  Which is as it must be if they are to succeed according to their own sets of goals.

A corporation, heck, most every non-governmental body, has to operate in the interests of those it serves: customers, suppliers, employees, stockholders.  And it can't let one group entirely supersede all the others.  It certainly can't let one vocal malcontent damage its operations or its reputation.

If your actions toward Zymm were anything like your comments here, I can see why they'd consider you too high a cost of doing business for too little gain.  I might also suggest that the more you talk, the more of us you convince that we wouldn't want to deal with you either.

What's funny is ,many organizations allow a serious discussion to take place in their midst, that often includes less than flattering comments about that organization or it's products. Often these forums are hosted by the company themselves. In micro though, often due to over inflated and highly sensitive egos, this is not the case.

I have to ask this in all honesty, who is Zymmetrical? And does it matter? They are probably doing you a favour by freeing up some time for you.

Also, are these selling RM or RF?  By those prices mentioned, I assume RM.

The reason there's a shortage, is because Getty is still a closed house.  There's plenty of people in the micros that would love to submit that kind of thing to Getty, and then the sales wouldn't be so sweet.

Also, I'd say the reason Yuri's bright, colorful, fun images get lost on micro is ... because of Yuri.  Constant hype, training blogs, interns, etc., have made a large group of people that duplicate his shots, so his stuff gets lost in the mix.

The image that he points to is an RF and likely the amount is a report of a couple of sales not one.

I found the article interesting. I don't see a lot of Yuri's images in the macro market, only some on Getty. Perhaps he has other names he goes by.

More like a week for me. Yes very slow everywhere.

What you said is right on Zenus. I have come to the same conclusion . Most of the aerials I have put up on mircostock have been photos left over from postcards, real estate and engineering planning  assignments. Although i have some advantages most pilots don't have-still doubt that i could make a profit shooting just for microstock.
My advantages are: 1-I  own the plane I use. It is a 1946 Taylorcraft which is very simple and relative inexpensive. 2-I live and take photos in a very rural area with lots of uncontrolled airspace. 3-I have and A&P licence so I can do my own aircraft maintenance.
But still I guess you would say I am a part time microstock photographerand probably stay that way.

Smiling Jack. Hard to argue with that formula.

In general landscapes don't sell well but really good quality ones do, some people have great success with just outdoor photos.  I would think aerial photos are a good niche, as most of us don't have many opportunities to do those, so there isn't much competition.

Aerials, if taken as part of some other exercise, may yield a profit in time. But if taken only for micro would require too much up front costs to make it worth while. Sure it's a niche but micro requires a tight control of costs and high probability of many sales and at the low end of about $150 per hour for a plane that's a lot of DLs. You can argue, well I have a pilot's license and I'd be out flying anyway. But everything we do has a cost associated with it. Eventually every one has to come to terms whether they are making any money at micro. Telling me you bought a new lens with the DLs is meaningless. Likely it would have been better to go off and get a part time job to buy a new lens with. The older you get the more expensive life becomes. It's a good idea to learn to make as much as possible as early as possible.

Does this mean we will gett a whopping 12.5 cents per DL?

I would think the easiest way to make money on new sites is to use the time you would use uploading and checking for wishful downloads to flip burgers somewhere. Think of it, guaranteed money. Easily more than you would make on most new sites. I should get a finders fee just for coming up with the idea.   ;D

The thing I'm seeing - if there is any trend yet at all - is stronger sales on SS and almost nothing changing on BigStock. It wouldn't really make sense to try to move volume away from your flagship site to a newly acquired competitor - more logical would be to do things the other way around - kinda like IS are doing with StockXpert. Personally I'm not expecting to see a big move to BigStock, more the opposite.

Yes this is what I would think is more sensible.

I can't see how anything will change. Will SS buyers migrate to BigStock? I doubt it.

Who said anything about buyers migrating from ss?
How about NEW buyers coming from the advertising and promotion from SS?
SS is putting up the cash!

Why must nearly everyone think negative about nearly every site ever mentioned on this forum?

-Larry

No but with the current "TEST" at SS of shutting off OD sales availability and sending customers to BigStock we could see  customers forced to BigStock to buy one ups and a few images.. Time will tell but this is not a good sign for SS submitters.

In all likelihood this move will completely backfire as some buyers will migrate to other sites. Start adding clicks to anyone's day and they get annoyed and leave. I still can't see a good reason to buy BigStock. They are way down the list of sales volumes for agencies especially compared to SS. Someone's ego has once again moved faster than it should have. The world of corporate insanity is rife with useless company purchases and mergers. That's what we have here. The idea that somehow BigStock will become a powerhouse is wishful thinking at best. Even with a gigantic advertising budget I doubt that BigStock could attract that many new buyers. So much of the design worlds daily routine of where to buy has long since been established. Those with a need for subscriptions wouldn't move and those that need single images would be forced to try a new site which they may not like,  leaving the buyer vulnerable to move elsewhere. But does it matter. They may go to iStock  or Dreamstime or whatever. Chances are you have your images there anyway. Are there any SS only contributors? If we all want more money at this stage the prices need to be jacked up, for which there is plenty of room. Those complaining of high micro prices need a lesson in reality.

is that with paypal or moneybookers?

Paypal.

Lisa,  Hello, is this still true? I mean if it is the case I see no reason to keep my portfolio there. I get so few sales and then not to get paid, that's too much.

New Sites - General / Re: Vivozoom anyone?
« on: November 06, 2009, 11:32 »
I had great hopes for this site. They had a good idea with the guaranteed photos but of course being a good idea iStock and others have decided to follow suit. As it stands Vivozoom will go down the road of obscurity soon enough. They may have been there all along.

Interesting read, the thing I find most telling are the complaints about the costs. Seriously? Microstock expensive? Scandalous indeed.

1175
Hopefully this will also help educate designers over there about copyright issues. Though with the lack of stigma attached to using nicked images in Turkey and the Middle East I doubt it. Can't see a lot of sales coming from this.

Most of the big markets in micro mirror those of the macro market and I don't recall seeing Turkey too many times as a sales location.
