General Macrostock / Re: Macro/Midstock site and exclusivitiy
« on: March 26, 2019, 11:58 »
Alamy

Thank you for your reply! Unforunately I never had any sales on alamy, and I'm not sure why.
Read the "How was your (month)" thread every month on their forum and you'll get a clue. Many of the people who have good months there are supplying Live News. Other than that, most of the big value sales are to the US, often of the US.
But if you compare the number of files people have with their number of sales, you'll see how low it is. And often the ports are good, though usually not the 'micro' type of files.

1152
I guess if we keep training the computer by fixing what it comes up with eventually it will get better?

Yes, of course :-)
That's how AI works.

Call me when it can positively identify Greenbuls.
Other than that, it's easier and quicker to do it myself. But then English is near enough my native language; it would be different if I were trying to keyword in a different language. But even then, I'd need to know enough of the language to be able to delete false suggestions, so not that much of a help.

I think exclusive numbers only count if that's the only entry.  If you have RM at Alamy or video anywhere else your earnings get reported as nonexclusive.
That's true, I don't report Alamy for that reason, but I believe others do.
Which make the iS indie score all the more shocking, as that presumably includes some exclusive reports.

1154
Not a good month here..

Not here either. I see the poll here SS has been dropping but is higher then IS exclusive now. Are more leaving or did the Exclusive income drop?

I suspect very few exclusives (probably fewer than 5) report now, and I'm pretty much a bottom feeder these days (since subs, PA etc.)

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy commission
« on: March 24, 2019, 06:46 »
Hi everyone, may I know how's alamy count the commission? The sales for the images is $ 21.71, but why there are "Alamy distribution commission and distributor commission and total is 70% charge fr Alamy? I thought they only charge 60% only? Thanks
Yes, you may know, and that's because Alamy is more transparent than most (all?) of the other micros, who either give you a flat rate for most (sub) sales, or you get a variable price per sale, but in neither case do you have a clue what your actual percentage of each individual sale is.
With Alamy, like it or not, it's broken down for you to see (as you don't see the value of the sale).
OK, on iStock you do see the value of the sale, but with PA, I'm not fully convinced that we get a percentage of the premium - that scheme is totally opaque.

1156
Also like in FAA you dont have to sell your pictures for pennies like in stock sites.so that is  a must regardless of low or zero sales
Because zero sales of files of $XXX is better than 1000 sales of $X.

General Stock Discussion / Re: The Getty debt
« on: March 22, 2019, 18:31 »
i hope they go bankrupt...lot of possibility of sales out there without those bigh sucker company...the problem is that if they go bankrupt imagine 00 millions file and more coming toward ss and fotolia...o better they stay there selling for penny to contributor...the problem is already there lot of exclusive seeing there rperd falling down and thinking to leave their exclusive status.

They wont go bankrupt but they might sellout to someone like Visual China Group... like Corbis did.

iStock has already been sold as part of a deal with Visual China Group. All istock uploads and older files are mirrored to veer and vcg.

Have you got a link for that?
The official word was that "VCG is a trusted business partner for Getty Images in China" meaning to get Getty images into the Chinese market.
Which of course led to low prices, mass copying and even them giving images away for free, though after many complaints that was said to have been stopped.
Whatever, it's not the same as being "sold".

1158
So, my existing files will be sold at 1$, with 0.75$ minimum sub royalty like Signature?
No, looking at my sales, the minimum sub sale seems to nowadays be 75c, whether the actual files are Signature or Essential, and I get 30% of that, which is 22.5c.

I think the big thing is, like Jo Anne said, nothing is predictable in this industry, and with iS in particular. I'm exclusive because it made sense at the time (2007) to become exclusive and I never wanted to participate in subscriptions. A prime example of things changing, as iS suddenly decided to offer subs. They change policies almost as fast as the rest of us change underwear.

It's a hard call. But you can always become indie again, after 30 days' notice, if things get even worse there.

Thanks for answers. And what about PP sales and Premium Access Time Limited?  On those sales I got 15%. If I go exclusive, will those sales also be at exclusive rate of 30%?
All sales via Getty, including Premium Access are at a flat rate of 20% for all exclusives, so obviously they're pushing buyers towards PA (I think my lowest so far is 6c). Also a lot of single image sales for me seem to come from Getty at 20% (mostly low value, unless I get lucky); but I don't know which illustrations get mirrored over there, whereas all exclusive editorial photos get mirrored onto Getty, also those which get 'plussed' - which seems to be quite a random process, from what I've read.

I have no idea about PP, but it shouldn't be an issue for long as they're closing Thinkstock rsn ("mid-2019")

1159
Keep in mind that iStock only requires exclusivity on commercial photos, so you can still upload editorial and RM to other agencies.
It can be worth it.

''Being Exclusive means that, for the file type(s) that you are Exclusive for, you agree that you cannot license any of that type of content in a royalty-free model elsewhere. So, for example, if you are Exclusive for Photos, you cant license any Photos with a competitor under the royalty free model, even images that youve never submitted to iStock.

You can still produce content in a work for hire or rights-managed manner. For more details, please see the Exclusive Artist Supply Agreement.''

For clarity, this has nothing at all to do with commercial or editorial.
It only has to do with RF. All your RF content has to go to iStock, whether it's editorial or commercial.
You can supply commercial and editorial content RF to iStock, and different commercial and editorial content RM elsewhere.
Not sure how relevant that is to the OP, but as I'm not an illustrator, I don't know anything about the world of RM illustrations. Or, indeed, the world of editorial illustrations.

I don't know what to think anymore, I thought that this is just a phase, but no, this a reality. My figures on Istock are even better than 2 year ago.

2 years ago my RPD on Istock was 0.6$ with 50% of my total income in $. Now, 2 years later, my RPD on Istock is 0.74$ with 64% of my total income, and I am non-exclusive. I have vector port on all sites from right column (big 4, middle tier, and few low earners), and on Istock I even have 150 files less than on Shutterstock (I have portfolio of around 1200 vectors)

These numbers make me seriously thinking to going exclusive on Istok, one of the most hated agency. (I dont have a great opinion about them too, but these number are so frustrating :) )

What do you think guys?

Also, is there any exclusive who wants to share their RPD?

Thanks!

You'd be better to ask for figures from illustrators, if that's all or most of what you do, but then again we all have different ports.

Just in case you don't know: if you become exclusive, all your existing files would continue to be sold at 1 credit, though you'll get a higher percentage. Your files after becoming exclusive would be sold for 3 credits.
(This also works in reverse: if someone gives up exclusivity, their existing files are still listed at 3 credits for which they get the lower percentage, and their new files after becoming indie are listed at 1 credit.)

You really have a dilemma: frustrating good numbers aren't generally reported there (see for example the current sales reports for February in their discussion forum), but you're * the trend.
Edited: hahaha I said b-u-c-king, but the auto-censor still cut what I wrote!

Is this kind of usage of our photos allowed by stock agencies?
https://www.amazon.com/Leyiyi-Broadcast-Celebrity-Background-Wallpaper/dp/B07JHY31DD?th=1
It would depend on where they bought the images, but generally yes, it would be a 'item for sale', and would usually need an appropriate extended/enhanced licence.
However, from what I've read here previously, it seems that some of this sort of buyer are on an 'honour' system with some agencies whereby they only have to pay if the product sells.
My interpretation would be until it actually sells only a standard licence would be needed to display on screen etc but  once purchased it becomes an actual product and the enhanced is needed.
Which is almost impossible to police, without buying an item yourself.

One really good sale via Getty (editorial) meant it was only my fourth-worst Feb ever, and better than ten months of last year.
So, for recent years, not too bad, also that sale made my rpd ($2.31) better than for a while.
Compared to Jan: +53%
Compared to Feb 2018: +56%
Compared to my best Feb ever (2013): -61.5%
Oh well, it is what it is. Just hoping for the random lottery large Getty sales.
Without that huge sale, it would have been my new 'worst month since Sept 2007'.

NB, this is the Off-topic forum, before anyone complains!

Last night I was at my choir and 'blue sky' featured in one of our songs, and without thinking my brain disambiguated it to 'clear sky' and I sang it.  :-[ :-[ :-[
Luckily, it was only a practice.
Why does getty have 'clear sky' rather than 'blue sky' (which surely most people say) anyway? Hypothetical question!!!

Have you seen if Getty (for example premium access) and credits are related to more value in comparison with "istock subs"?

Enviado desde mi ALP-L29 mediante Tapatalk

IME, premium access sales are usually, but not quite always, much lower than subs. Often these are 'premium access, time limited' where the time can be really short, I've read as low as four hours, but I can't see that anywhere other than someone saying it on here a while back. I can't find any way to check out the terms for PA other than by signing up for them.

1169
I don't see any content in the OP's post, also February's downloads aren't currently online for me, nor is my Profile page frozen while the update process takes place, nor is there any mention of them being available in their forum, nor in two independent forums I'm on.

Tomorrow is 20.

What are you trying to say? We've been paid numerous times before 20, and also after 20. So this date doesn't actually means anything. Basically, we get results around that date, sometimes before, sometimes after.

As all you  had was a title, it looked like you were complaining because you had downloads but no earnings reported.
Indeed, we have had results before the 20th, and recently we tend to have been paid before the 26th.
Maybe (?) it depends on how the dates relate to the weekend.

A turnaround is not out of the picture yet but it requires a strong telephoto lens to see it.

My English are still in development but this looks like a poor simile to close an article just because dealing with a Photo Company.
Perfectly normal journalese, and quite a clever example of such, IMO.

BTW, that's not a simile. (Being pedantic, but trying to help with your English development)
A simile has to use the format 'as ... as...'
As blind as a bat
As innocent as a lamb
As hot as hell
etc

I can also see number of downloads for February under ESP>my performance>content statistics>downloads>feb 2019
Available on the phone app as well.

twice as many as January, but could end up with less royalties if they all sold for pennies.

Och, that!
Well, yes but I don't see much point in knowing my dls without the royalties, so I ususally disregard that.
Also, it seems to report different sales differently, meaning some files are showing as having multiple sales, but some are shown as having one sale, but several times down the list. That's not very useful, IMO.

But now, having looked, I'm up on Jan for dls, but like you say, who knows? My $$ are shakily dependent on getting large Getty sales, which (for me) don't come every month.

« on: March 19, 2019, 04:06 »
I'm getting sales, but low value. I know people who have had good value sales this month.

At this moment, less than 25% into the year, I have 31% of my sales volume compared to the total sales for last year (I added over 30% to my port in that time, but know that new files usually have to settle in), but only 11% of the $$$.

1174
By the way, does anyone know why have there been rejections for exclusivity applications lately at Istock, I remember that it used to be a matter of pushing the Apply button before. They got selective now?
Yes, apparently they review your port.
There's a recent post by Kelvin stating this in the Discussion forum over there.
