General Stock Discussion / Re: Travel Pics
« on: November 27, 2012, 15:07 »
I put my travel photos in macro only, except for generic shots. I see they sell in Alamy (if not mine, other people's) for the publishing companies, I guess.

But then, I think that locations that are very well covered, such as the Big Ben, it's a matter of luck to have someone pick ours among hundreds of choices.

Hmm, so if they are concerned about competition, images of the same location (as I said, they picked some travel photos from my portfolio) would all be tied to them. I'm not sure I like that, especially because my photos are not generic or iconic or conceptual images that may sell often. Here are some of the ones they picked.  Except maybe for the macaw, all the others would probably sell only for a travel magazine or book, don't you think?

Here are a couple other threads about the subject as well
I had seen those, Leaf, but the newest is one year old and I was looking for more recent feedback.

Araminta, your experience is interesting, very attractive for just 20 images.

Requesting exclusivity is something that doesn't attract me, though. Do they require exclusivity for all images in a series or just the ones they pick?

I like the photos I take with my Nokia E72. It has controls for WB, exposure, contrast.

I don't know about iPhone, but I have an iPod Touch and I don't like its camera, it's all automatic and quality isn't any good for a serious purpose.

I got an email about some of my photos in Flickr (travel photos of Bolivia) had been selected for Getty. I did a search here and didn't find anything recent about this.

Any comments? is it worth? Do they require exclusivity?

No, I haven't read the terms of this deal yet. I am pretty sure however that many of you have already digested all the legal terms.

Is that for the "artistic" Instagram filters (which I personally don't find really artistic) or for photojournalism?

Great! However, US$700 still missing and there is just one day left. I guess the loan will not be funded, but at least the guy has already gotten his loan even without Kiva's support.

mtkang, there are "partners" acting between the people and Kiva. These partners are supposed to be agencies that not only lend the money and receive the payments, but also guide the people in their businesses.

I'm back already, Mantis. :)

I have 3 batteries and 3 cards (2x4GB + 1x8GB).

Great!

$925 to go now... Not very promising. It's curious, because the "partner" has a good record, but then it is also relatively new in Kiva.

Does Zazzle make sense with Images? Or is it only usefull with Illustration?
I've sold posters, postcards and other stuff with travel photos, and used also some stock-images for cards (Xmas, for example) and business cards. In some products, such as t-shirts and stickers, I've had better results with illustrations.

It's interesting that some of you liked Malta so much. A very rich history, no doubt. Valletta and Mdina really offered some interesting photos. I visited Mdina twice, first we didn't see much because of a storm, second I had very little time before going to the airport. Also being with people (I have friends in Malta) who are not into photography is a problem, as I can not just take my time preparing a photo. The other cities were not so interesting, even with a church here and there. Blue Lagoon boats were not leaving because of sea conditions. I spent a day in Gozo, went to see some cliffs and beaches (a very different concept of beach for a Brazilian ;D ) and churches.
I liked the variety of sceneries, both natural and architectural, of Sicily. I was expecting Etna to erupt, but no luck. ;D  But saw some lava in Stromboli.
After two weeks of my return, I have not edited any image yet. :(

I started with one single store. Later I created one just for the photography-based products (posters, postcards, magnets), one for business cards, one for my lovebirds (that would be in portuguese in Zazzle BR, but then I realized this is not a good idea) and one for using NASA photos.

Now, is it worth it? I can not say. Actually I haven't done anything new there maybe in a year. I suppose this is more interesting if you plan to market your store yourself, because I would imagine that a general buyer coming to Zazzle will simply do a search and browse results.

I have no idea if a specialized store has any benefits in search results. Google Analytics does not provide any useful information to me. Sometimes I sell a product from one store and GA doesn't even show a visit.

I stopped tracking this year... Too little money for the time wasted in it.

Anyway, I use an excel spreadsheet. Photo name on the first column, agencies names on each of the other columns. On the crossing cells, I use green background for the accepted images, orange for the rejected ones, white when not submitted (and if not able to submit, due to the minimum size, for instace, a "-" in it). Then I put the number of downloads on each of these cells, and if there are FLs, I add this info as a note.

In a separate tab, I put the monthly earnings with each agency. This is the only info I still update.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: File too similar Rio Olimpics logo 2016
« on: October 29, 2012, 19:59 »
There was a event in, I believe, Mexico, who used a logo very similar to ours and the Brazilian Olympic Commitee protested - they changed it, obviously, because the "inpiration" was very clear.

BTW, the Olympic logo is beautiful, unlike the ugly Wordl Cup logo.

It was a surprise, also because this is a very ordinary image. It appears however in the second row of results in Google Images if one searches for this specific building.
Direct licensing, no Getty - I have'nt even thought about this, do they required exclusivity or any other ties?. My images in Flickr are relatively small (750 to 900 pix max) and watermarked.
They agreed in the negotiations for the second image, what is great. I'm happy I have offered it, and it is a joy and pride to have one of my father's images perpetuated in a book. I'm happier with that than with my own image.

General Stock Discussion / Sold through Flickr
« on: October 28, 2012, 22:35 »
Hi there,

I haven't been much here, but I wanted to share that I licensed an image that the buyer - a local company doing a book project for a corporate client - found in Flickr. And this may lead to another image being licensed, as I have an old image (1940s, taken by my father) that may suit their needs and wasn't online.

I am very pleased, and even surprised as this was a very ordinary image of a building in downtown Rio. I'm glad I have Flickr! :)

« on: September 25, 2012, 05:55 »
Thanks everyone for your help. My friend is getting the 120-300mm. The microadjustment of the focus is a novelty to him as well. Now I wish my 400D had it too!

I have no idea of what adjustments you are talking about. :(
He has a Canon 7D. It's the OS version, though not the one which has just been released. He is probably getting a good price exactly because of this release.
I'll PM you my email address. Thank you!

RT and Ploink,

Have you ever used the 120-300 in low light conditions, like in a stadium or maybe indoors (not studio)?

Thank you all for your replies. Yes, 2.8 is really a must, I guess. When I go to a stadium - on the stands and not on the field, however - the light is a bit low even for a f/1.8 at ISO 1600.

Your comments on the 120-300mm have been quite interesting.

Cameras / Lenses / Sigma 300mm f/2.8 EX DG
« on: September 18, 2012, 21:20 »

A photographer friend of mine needs a fast 300mm lens for sports, basically for football (soccer for you in USA  ;D ). This means shooting at night, with the stadium lighting, therefore the need for a f/2.8.

The Canon 300 IS f/2.8 costs US$7250 in USA and a Sigma 300mm f/2.8 EX DG costs US$3400 - a huge difference. Given also the cost to purchase it in Brazil, the difference gets much larger.

Does anyone here have some experience with this particular Sigma lens? Can you share your opinion about it?

Rentals are not available here.
