Veer / Re: The Veer Puzzle
« on: September 18, 2010, 08:47 »
This indeed is a problem.
It has been brought to Veer attention already.
We can only hope they'll act on it, sooner rather than later.

Come on Thomas, more! Upload more :)
For now do it for the collection alone, upload your port, help Veer climb up the ladder. Sales will come in time (hopefully).
We have to try to stop IStock's 15% horror from spreading around.
It's in our hands. One step at a time.
Give Veer a chance, if you can :)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Agency Collection Now Showing up on IStock
« on: September 16, 2010, 10:26 »
This is not about the Agency or even about their latest royalty changes.
This is about IStock disintegrating right before our eyes.
Everything is spinning out of control - forums, trust, standards, inspections, collections, rules and agreements.
IStock admins - deleting posts and locking / deleting threads is not going to work anymore. This is out of control and is not going away.
Your best move would probably be to get someone from IStock (someone trusted by contributors) to open a new thread and start a dialogue. A real dialogue, questions, answers, facts.
You need to do it fast.
The longer you avoid it, the more damage.

« on: September 15, 2010, 08:33 »
I cannot bring myself to upload to a site that pays 15% commission.
I gave it a lot of thought, but it's impossible.
I just can't do it, something inside me breaks.

I will not sell a single image for anything lower than 20%.
Stopped uploading.
Delete port before the change takes place.
Do my best to let designers know what's happening and divert them away from IStock. Today, tomorrow, long term.

Buying from IStock is not cool anymore.

Veer / Re: Veer? what are they doing??
« on: September 14, 2010, 09:02 »
Dark Angel,
I think I know the answer - yes, you can. There's no image lock-in at Veer. You're free to delete your port anytime you want to.
But just to make sure, will you wait a couple of hours for an official reply?
I don't want to give you the wrong information :)

Don't overlook Veer, give them a try. If you can :)
It's a special agency with generous commissions and increasing sales.
They're part of Corbis, giants of the industry, but unlike Getty, they're fair.
Well worth the effort.

But there's a problem that you should know of. Right now inspection times can be very long. Veer is aware of this, they're training new inspectors and working to improve it.
It will get better, I'm sure :)

Veer / Re: Dash for Cash Editing and Payment Update
« on: September 14, 2010, 08:35 »
Veer is a special agency.
Not a newcomer, but a well known and well respected brand.
They're now part of Corbis, huge, a giant, but unlike Getty, they're generous. Very.
'Dash for Cash' was the best uploading offer I've ever heard of.
Artist commissions are some of the highest in the industry and sales are increasing.
Customer support is fast, polite and professional.
Uploading system - easy.
Rejections - hopefully getting there.
Veer web site - the only microstock site I've seen so far that shows designer talent at work. Not quite flawless, but the best in my books. Beautiful.
There's nothing stopping Veer from climbing up there.
Nothing, they've got everything they need. And now they trained more inspectors.
Good news Veer, step on it, we wish you all the best!

I can't see a thing!
Tell us please how to find the new feature :)
Must be fun :)

BlueFish,
thank you for doing your best to help us, and the industry :)
I've already sent emails, called my friends, everyone I know, printers and designers.
That's done. I'll be sure to do it again in a week or so.
I'm working on a list of all creative agencies in Ireland.

Can someone draft a well-thought, standard email for us to send / post on web sites? Can I have a look pleaese? (PM).

Me too!
Write my name down please, I want to help.

134
Hi there Kat,
thanks for taking the time to post here :)
(This is not about my images, I don't matter, you won't be looking for me. This is about Fair-Trade and respect for contributing artists).
Could you please give us a hand and have a look at the agencies that pay us a fairer commission? Whenever you can, from time to time ...
I would recommend supporting sites like Dreamstime, Veer, Shutterstock and possibly a new comer, by designers for designers, GraphicLeftovers (unfortunately no model releases there yet)?

They're easy to deal with, prices are fair, solid collections, top Customer Support and unlike Getty, they treat artists with more respect.
Give them a chance, if you can :) It can make a difference :)
Thank you!

iStockPhoto.com / Re: So what are we all going to do?

We need a leader because it motivates people.
It's guidance and a sense of belonging. To a group, to something bigger, stronger.
We follow precise steps and we act together, united.
On day X we sign a petition and post it on a web site.
On day Y we stop uploading.
On day Z we start deleting images. One at a time.
We contact legal help.
We list creative houses in Canada - we draft an email and send it to them.

We can do all of the above, and more, independently of course. But the impact is not the same, it's half-baked.

Unfortunately you're probably right. This is a lost battle.

Getty is bringing in their own professional photographers. What goes round, comes round. They're going to pay them 20% (proabably).
No independent will ever reach the target.
IStock is becoming something else, not a micro site anymore, but something else.
And there's nothing we can do about it. We can all leave, Getty doesn't care.
I don't even think they want us there anymore (except for the top few, of course).
We, the 'regulars', are forcing our way in and it doesn't feel right.
They don't need us, why push it?
There will be new, exciting opportunities for some. Most will feel left aside.

And since IStock is not a micro-agency anymore, maybe 15% is less of an insult?
Who knows, we'll have to wait and see.
They're changing alright.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: So what are we all going to do?
« on: September 11, 2010, 21:57 »
I agree. I've had enough.
15 % commission is an insult, (to us and to the other sites). And so is their 1.400.000 credits target.
But enough about that already.
Let's move.

First thing first.
We need to keep this thread alive and focused.
There are too many idle threads already, it's confusing.

Louis, please bump this thread from time to time.

We need to contact other contributors. Send them here. For now, this thread - meeting place.
We need to know who is willing to participate.
We need ideas.
We need a leader.
We need organization.

I'm in, just tell me what to do and when to do it.

We may well fail. But at least we TRIED.

« on: September 11, 2010, 20:52 »
Note to add to my previous post :

I will make sure that no file of mine ever sells for anything less than 20%.
Especially at IStock.
That's where I draw the line. 20%.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: So what are we all going to do?
« on: September 11, 2010, 19:51 »
Blammo,
I don't want to hear that. Other agencies, in the past ... water under the bridge.
I don't want to hear about that anymore.

This is about now.
This is about 15% commission.
If we do nothing but moan, we deserve to be treated this way. It's our fault.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: So what are we all going to do?
« on: September 11, 2010, 19:48 »
I'm still in shock.
I can't believe it's happening.

I'm in.
Let's organize ourselves. We need a leader, we need a group, we need clear instructions.
I'll do everything I possibly can to help.

If we accept IStock's 15% now we create a precedent.
I'm not even sure their changes are legal (lock-in canister agreement), we need professional advice.

Is there nothing we can do to stop this from happening?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock Independents Only Poll
« on: September 11, 2010, 19:34 »
I don't know about cutting my nose ...
One thing for sure - accepting ANY offer, no matter how low, how insulting, it's not doing any good to my nose, and, most importantly, my future.
I have a hard time believing that IStock can't survive unless they cut my commission to 15%.
The same holds true for microstock contributors.
I have a hard time believing some microstock contributors really can't afford to withdraw ports at IS. They can. In most cases there's no real danger. Some can.
It's not so much about bills, food on the table and growing families.
It's about personality, nose if you will, and more, but I'll leave it at that.
To each its own.

In my case, I'm still in shock and I need a few more days to think this over.
I'm faced with a task that right now seems impossible to me. I can't bring myself to upload to a site that offers 15% commission. It's so low, it's unreal. IStock of all places!

Have a look at those targets. They're funny. Contributors who diversified by producing more than one media type - in my case vectors and photos - are being hit twice as hard.
To diversify your port is not a good thing anymore. At least at IStock it isn't.

Well, by myself I don't matter.
Unfortuntately we seem to be incapable of organizing ourselves  - there's no group or union that I can join or try to help.
IStock will go ahead, targets will be yearly adjusted and no independent contributor will ever make it to 20%. That's for sure.

Impaler,

Thing is, there's something wrong with your memory. It got wiped out. Aliens did it!
IStock the bestest. Yeah, but not really.
Not so long ago you were complaining about their poor sales, biased best match and crappy management. Right here, on this forum. You were asking for advice and looking to go independent.
What happened? You got a badge? All is well now?
Well done, we wish you continued success.
Now go impale a goat and stop spamming.

CClapper,
this is the real problem. I'm willing to do everything I can to stop this from ever happening again. IStock's changes might not even be legal, (canister lock-in agreement), but we're weak and incapable of organizing ourselves.
What's to do ?

They're SEXY!
Now relax, move on ...

'Back in 2004 ... '
this guy can't stop himself.
There he goes again telling us his life story. While Rome is burning.
I feel like sending him a romance novel, red roses, a box of chocolate.

Well, this is it.
15% commission for me, 85% for Getty.
It seems incredible, unreal.
Is this legal?

you're young, talented and intelligent.
I have always agreed with you.

You have my support. If anything at all can be done to stop this kind of behaviour, I'm in.

@Jamirae,
I don't hate you. I like you actually :)
And I wish you best of luck. I mean it.

And if indeed there are many IStock Exclusives who think independents have been treated unfairly over the years, well, they should have been more vocal.
I'm not going to go into all that now; let's just wait for the announcement and hope for the best.
For all of us.

147
Good move Achilles :)

Dreamstime is a great agency and unlike Getty, Achilles still cares for his baby.
It's the best guarantee for the future that I can think of.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock changing royalty structure

@Loop,
Oh, please. Baldrick is right.
There are a lot of exclusives who don't give a  d*** about what happens to independents. Not only that, but deep down they harbour this lovely hope that independents get crushed further and further - commissions, best match - search position, exposure, collections access - , give nothing to independents, let them rot.
This is OUR site, We built it, We deserve every perk, it's US, the Exclusives who should get all the rewards. Independents are kindly invited to bear the blows and rot in hell.
It's a common attitude and one of the main reasons I never wanted to be part of the 'crowned' group. Not cool. At all.
Of course Baldrick is right. And don't ask me to cut and paste, it's stupid, but I might well do it.
That doesn't mean that every exclusive is guilty.
And it's definitely not a subject we should be discussing right now.

What bothers me right now is this - how far is too far?
How many independents are willing to take the cut and submit their images for 15 % commission? Probably most of them.
I strongly belive that there's no such thing as 'going too far' in the world of microstock photographers.  10% commission is fine, and so is 5.
0.25 cents is better than nothing and the race is on.

Helix 7,  CClapper
I agree. 100%. I'll do everything I possibly can to help make that happen.
Designers, printers, friends, everyone I know.
I too have had enough of IStock / Getty. Pompous nonsense.
By myself I don't matter. Standing by your side I might be able to help.

I picked Dreamstime.
It's very easy to deal with, both buyers and contributors.
But I do like Shutterstock very much, Disorderly is right. It's a great agency.
I like Veer as well. But they're not quite there yet.
