Took me a little while to realize that this is a thread mostly from 2010 so much of the data may be out of date. SS, FT, VE, and DP have sent me 1099s.

This seems to be a pretty stupid ruling. As far as I know, the registration process, though slow, is more or less automatic. No human actually looks at the image and decides this is a unique work and rejects an application. If that is the case, why force the person whose work has been infringed to wait a year before filing a suit for an automatic administrative process to grind away?

I'm sure this and the change to the SS referral program are the direct result of being publically traded and the need to improve the bottom line every quarter. I'm sure every six months or so from now until SS is no longer worth it, there will be some new policy that cuts total income from contributors in some way.

----------------------- Partner to which microstock agency? I'm trying to keep the list focused on just microstock, but if there is a link, I'm happy to post it. Can you provide more information?

I can't get in either. What is the point of a website that you can't register for? Somebody should ask DP what the deal is.
I'll add them to the partner list.

I also use Backblaze for my 1.8 TB of stock files and find them to be inexpensive and reliable. Initial uploading takes a long time, but maintenance uploading happens in the background, so it requires no additional effort on my part. I also have everything backed up to external drives and also DVDs that I store off-site, so I have triplicates of everything stock related.

Just found these two:
Fotolia - www.parangaimages.com my whole Fotolio port is here. Fotolia - www.awallfactory.com this one shows my images in 960px without watermark. Is this a partner?
---------------------------------- Awallfactory.com seems to only have a handful of images total, none of mine from FT or otherwise. I'll add parangaimages.com when I do the next update.

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?". The operator says "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says "OK, now what?"

My all time favorite
"A guy goes into a bar with his pet octopus and says "I bet $50 that no one here has a musical instrument that this octopus can't play."
The people in the bar look around and someone fetches an old guitar.
The octopus has a look, picks it up, tunes up the strings and starts playing the guitar. The octopus's owner pockets the fifty bucks.
Next guy comes up with a trumpet, octopus takes the horn, loosens up the keys, licks its lips and starts playing a jazz solo. The guy hands over another fifty bucks to the octopus's owner.
The bar owner has been watching all this and disappears out back, coming back in a few moments later with a set of bagpipes under his arm. He puts them on the bar and says to the guy and his octopus, "Now, if your octopus can play that I'll give you a hundred dollars."
The octopus takes a look at the bagpipes, lifts it up, turns it over, has another look from another angle. Puzzled, the octopus's owner comes up and says "What are you fooling around for? Hurry up and play the * thing!"
The octopus says "Play it? If I can figure out how to get its pyjamas off I'm gonna F@ck it!"

I think things should be fixed now.. but it might take an hour or two for everything to look normal. The problem is on my end not yours.
--- technical answer: I have had the site traffic running through cloudflare but just stopped using that service today - mostly because cloudflare also blocks the IP address of the user which makes it very hard to keep ahead of the trolls / spammers. ... so instead of cloudflare resolving the DNS's, my server host is now resolving them. I had to make a few updates to the server host settings and messed up. I think it is fixed now though but might take time for the proper settings to be propagated everywhere.
Let me know if things don't look better by tomorrow.
Here I was thinking Istock sent a DMCA notice on the icons

I've deactivated my best 100. Don't see much point in deactivating the low sellers first, as that helps istock.
Indeed, people with thousands of images deleting their bottom 10% makes no sense at all, it doesn't hurt them, you actually make them a favour since you're taking the garbage out. Now deleting all your flamed images, that would send a message.
Sean made this nice script, but did he, in fact, deleted any files himself? I hope he did or at least plans to, making a script and using it, would really send a strong message, especially since he's #4 at IS
--------------------- I imagine he's considering it, given that he created the script. (unless this has been around awhile and I never heard about it.)

Useful info for those affected...
http://www.dpreview.com/articles/1999431312/two-easy-steps-for-using-a-dmca-takedown-notice-to-battle-copyright-infringement
Its useful but what I read there has me thinking.
The same provision of copyright law that allows for the takedown notice also allows the alleged infringer to file a counter notice. After sending your takedown notice to the ISP, the ISP will notify the alleged infringer of the notice. The infringer then can send a counter notice to the ISP declaring that the infringer has a good faith belief that the material was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or misidentification of the material to be removed or disabled and other requirements of Section 512 (g). At that point, the ISP is caught in the middle. By law, the ISP must repost the infringing material to its original location.
Unfortunately, the only option then to stop the infringement is to file a lawsuit asking the court to enter an injunction stopping the use of the copyright material. Since the infringer can easily move the use of the copyrighted material to another ISP, its best to include a copyright infringement claim in the lawsuit. Such lawsuits are expensive and significant damages usually can only be recovered if your image is registered. Fortunately, most infringers dont take the time to file a counter notice. But be sure to register the copyrights to your photos so that you have all of the tools necessary to fight copyright infringement.
That will give all power to Google, and they will probably put a team of agents on the case and send out counter notifications to the ISPs in a much faster rate and larger scale then all the affected photographers can do.
Also, I do not get why an image needs to be registered. Copyright is copyright in my opinion, registered or not.
Google is not infringing anybody's copyright in this, so the whole idea is nonsense. You authorised iStock to license it and iStock licensed it via Getty to Google, which is - apparently - complying with whatever terms there were in the special unrevealed license. So any dispute would be with the distributors - iStock and Getty - over whether they have violated the terms of the distrubution agreement you have with them. Until you prove that they have violated the terms, Google is in the clear.
At least, that is how I see it.
----------------------------------------------- Not sure that I agree that Google is off the hook. Think of this 1) Contributor sends Google a DCMA notice asserting that Google does not have the right to use the image the way Google is using it. 2) Google refuses to take it down saying they have a valid license. 3) Istock/Getty lose a court case brought by the contributor and are found to have licensed content outside the scope of the contributor agreement, meaning in part they infringed the copyright of the contributor. 4) Google can say "well we thought we had a valid license", but they A) still failed to comply with a legitimate DCMA notice and are still on the hook for that failure and B) distributed infringing material after being told by the owner that Google did not have a valid license. Google's recourse is to go after Istock/Getty for misrepresenting their ability to license the images the way they did.
