Really? I thought I had read in this forum you contributors could set prices there. So they are the armpit of microstock!

General Stock Discussion / Videohive High Priced Footage« on: January 25, 2017, 13:09 »
I just went to the Videohive site to explore the option of uploading there but keeping my prices high. I'm aware they're known for selling very low priced footage but I was thinking about experimenting. I see some people doing well on Pond5 with video clips at $500 each so I was wondering if there's any of that happening at Videohive, since it's another agency where you can set your own price.
Here's what happened: I did a search for "aerial" with the price range of $100-500... Nothing. Then I left the search bar blank... Nothing! I then dropped with price range to $50-500 and finally some clips started to appear. So even with 4k footage they don't even have 1 clip listed at over $100? Is this place the frickin' armpit of microstock!? I guess my real question is, would it be worth it to upload some clips and list them at... say $200, with hopes that some buyers might see them as higher quality and less populated? I'm just trying to experiment here with agencies that allow us to set our own prices. I'd love to hear thoughts on this. 128

Yes Prores HQ is the way to go. If you're going to take selling stock footage serious, I would think you would wan't to provide the highest quality clips possible. Why do all the work to produce and process the footage only to loose quality in the export just to save a bit of space.

Also I'm not sure if it's better then the Ronin, but I use the Zhiyun Crane. It's a one handed gimbal. Pretty convenient for tight spaces.

I haven't used either, but the Movi M5 has come down in price. I hear it's more stable, especially in vertical movements

Things are starting to pick back up for me. Slow start to January after a slow December and November. October was my best month ever. I've been seeing image sales increase while videos are slowing starting to sell more consistently.

It looks like iStock and Getty get hated on pretty hard here... but doesn't anyone think this might be a change for the better? A one month inconvenience and transition to ESP and they might just be creating a more user friendly interface. Maybe I'm just hoping here...

Nimia! They are structured to be a file storage and marketplace.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Does anyone add grain in camera raw to stock nature images?« on: January 10, 2017, 15:46 »
Thanks for all feedback. I personally like to edit all images as good as possible so the buyer doesn't need to do any editing. As far as grain, I will most likely do some experimenting but only add just a little. I do agree with not adding too much as it cannot be reversed, even if I like the gritty effect it might add to a photo. Thanks again!

I like the way little grain looks on my nature images but haven't added it to any Ive submitted assuming they'll be rejected. Just curious if others bump up the grain a little bit.

I have the same list with the addition of Nimia. I don't get much sales there but they have other benefits for uploading... File storage and website embedding. Considering trying video on 123RF since my photo sales have been increasing there. Anyone successful with video on 123RF?

So for the people sticking with iStock, I guess we can just hope they're making improvements in viewing stats on ESP. Does anyone have success using Stockperformer or any other place to view stats on all microstock??

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / Re: Advice on GH4 setting for stock footage« on: November 07, 2016, 17:56 »
Hey Manuel, I would recommend Cinelike D. That's what I used before spending the $100 for the Vlog L upgrade. Cinelike D is flatter than Standard and might require a few seconds more in post but will get better results. To get the best out of the camera pay the $100 to use Vlog L which will give you 2 extra stops of dynamic range (but will require more time in post). Hope this helps!

General - Stock Video / Re: Best 4K export setting with Premiere CC« on: November 06, 2016, 14:05 »
I'm not a tech but isn't it supposed your camera can shoot raw or ProRes in order to make any further "honest" ProRes files?
[/quote] I'm not all that tech savvy either but I have read in creativecow and other forums where professional editors would much rather have Prores HQ than Proress 422 if they need to make further color/lighting changes. They had explained that it doesn't matter what camera a clip is shot with. They stated that they can't stand it if they have to do further manipulation to a file that has been exported at Prores 422. Apparently Prores HQ shows less grain when stretching highlights and shadows. I shoot raw with my Panasonic GH4 using the Vlog L upgrade providing 2 extra stops of dynamic range. Again I'm no tech either so I'm not sure if I'm still exporting at a higher quality file than needed. But in my opinion, appealing to editors is kinda the name of the game so I'm willing to deal with the bigger file sizes. 142

I use Prores HQ which seems to be the editors choice if they need to do any further color correcting or color grading. I started with Prores 422 and tried Photo-JPEG but want to provide the highest quality for whoever is buying my clips. I've done some research on this and most professional editors want Prores HQ to maintain the highest quality through any further correcting. Anything less gets a more grain when stretching those highlights and shadows. I'm sure there will plenty of people saying this is not necessary and it makes the file size too big, but I feel good about providing the best quality.

General Stock Discussion / Site where a minor can start an account?« on: November 03, 2016, 15:11 »
Hi I'm looking for a site to start an account for my 12 year old son. He's quickly becoming a better photographer than me and I would love to start an account for him to start earning money at a young age. Has anyone had experience with this? Based on some looking around a few months ago it looked like most sites require you to be 18 years old.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Best stock agency to sell high quality videos??« on: September 15, 2016, 17:39 »
Well I appreciate everyones advice and constructive criticism. Upgrading my equipment is for my freelance work just as much as it is for stock. I was just trying to figure out options for the stock footage shot with it. As far as making due with what I have... I've found the gh4 very limiting with low light and no 4k slow motion. The Phantom 3 Professional shoots only decent video and less quality photos. I'm new to this industry, but figuring things out pretty fast based on reading other peoples experiences. I believe to keep growing and taking things to a higher level, more professional equipment is needed. In some ways, a R3D Raven and Inspire 1 Raw are still kinda lower end equipment compared to what a lot of stuff is shot with these days. Thanks again to everyone involved in this discussion, I always like bouncing ideas off other creative people.

Haha, I live in Washington State where it is legal. When I first started selling micro stock over a year ago I had an opportunity to shoot photos at a grow house for medical marijuana dispensaries. My focus is on video, but I can't lie, those pics sell well. I don't actually even smoke weed anymore. I kinda wish I could add links to my video portfolios and not photos.

Hmmm... am I able to sell just those clips exclusive on Getty and still have the rest of my portfolio spread across the other agencies? Do you have experience with exclusive RM clips there? and if so, do you believe that would bring in more money than selling at a high price point on Pond5?

General Stock Discussion / Best stock agency to sell high quality videos??« on: September 14, 2016, 16:10 »
I'm looking for suggestions about the best site to sell high quality videos. I'm currently filming with a Panasonic GH4 and a Phantom 3 Professional, which are great tools for microstock, but I'll soon be upgrading to much higher quality equipment and I just can't see myself throwing those clips in with the rest of my microstock portfolio. My plan is to get a R3D Raven with a Movi and an Inspire 1 Raw. I would prefer to go exclusive with those clips and sell them at a higher price point than my other clips. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience in this area? Maybe sell them for around $400 each on Pond5?
