General Stock Discussion / Re: Sad day for photographers
« on: July 31, 2009, 20:31 »

How much did that shoot on the mountain cost you in time/money and how much should they be sold for?

The two -- time taken and money spent -- have never had much to do with how much a stock image was worth or how much someone was willing to pay for it. The Microsoft splash screen of field and sky was worth $125,000 for the one sale. How long did the photographer spend on it and how much was the expense? Probably not too much on either.

My guess is they have been running for a long time but only reported sales today for some reason.

Some things I have noticed; micro generally likes a very bright image and although yours is in the acceptable range it would likely do better being brighter. Second, many super great images have not place on micro. Learn how and submit them to macro sites. Thirdly, try not to get too caught up on what gets rejected; although I have done my share of bitching as well, it is a real time waster.

Always store the master as a tif. That way it is easier manipulated later for size.

1255
I never found any of my micro portfolio but did find a couple from my macro portfolio. The world is still in a surplus of losers.

1256
Despite a portfolio of around 2000 I pulled all my images off their site for exactly these reasons. Why doesn't everyone do the same?

What's a "tripod'?  :o  ;)
A three legged dog?  ::)

« on: July 24, 2009, 09:32 »
I find most micro reviewers either don't like selective focus or don't understand it. Whatever it is they do like to reject images with it.

The article quotes,

" They did not identify themselves, but demanded that he show them some ID and warned that if he failed to comply, they would summon police officers to deal with him.
This they did, and a PCSO and WPC quickly joined the fray."

who were these guys and what right did they have asking for ID.

1260
Not that I think the police is all innocent, but this guy simply could have shown some more cooperation and I am sure he would not have been arrested.

Come ON!!  You would show your ID to a couple of buffoons, rent-s-cops at best, because they asked you to?? Get serious. This sort of stuff drives me nuts. Say anything at all and you become an instant threat? Everyone loves a police state, right?

For me only the Distribution is worthwhile.

Crestock.com / Lots of sub sales
« on: July 08, 2009, 15:24 »
Is anyone else getting lots of sub sales all of a sudden. A couple times in the last couple days I am getting groups of 20 sub sub sales at a time. Normally Crestock is sooooo sleepy I forget about them. So what's happening here?

Alamy.com / Re: New Alamy QC Policy
« on: July 08, 2009, 12:38 »
Alamy does not sell many images as often as you get in micro, but anyone who has successfully contributed to them will tell you it's not often you get rejected.
So, when I hear this cleanup implemented by Alamy, I applaud them. You really have to be bad (example: upsizing and losing clarity and definition, over processing to make up for the bad upsized image, etc) to repeatedly fail QC.

Like many here, I did not get notice of this . My upload percentage has been consistently 100% and reviewed promptly by Alamy standards. I think it will be the best for all of us.

I totally agree. It should really be straight forward getting good acceptance rates into Alamy.

1265
Generally speaking, I make more off the models I pay than those that work for free. The ones that work for free, far too often often, mess up a shoot with ideas of their own, and since they are working for free, it's harder to tell them what to do. The TFP types are less likely to participate in a multi person shoot and are harder to coordinate. Plus far too often, just plain don't show up. I rarely get no shows from paid models. All that said I still use both paid and unpaid, but am much pickier these days with the free models.

I imagine there is one maybe two places where they are made in the world.

Off Topic / Re: Poll For Photoshop Users
« on: July 01, 2009, 23:03 »
I guess you have to ask yourself, will the people buying my images bother to pay for them or is it okay for the end user to rip off the images free of charge any chance they get?

1268
That's a good question. They seem to have dropped off the map.  There was beta testing of the site happening but can't say where they are at these days.

General Photography Discussion / Motion Picture stills

This off topic but has anyone here done any motion picture stills work?

1270
Also we have found our voices through independent forums such as this one.

I think this is a very good point. For me, unless I am looking for something site specific, participating in site forums is too constricting.

1271
Too many variables to put a simple happy/unhappy label on things.

Happy with iStock/Dreamstime/Veer.
Unhappy with Fotolia, dropped them.
Unhappy with the tedious nature of submitting.
Hate subscriptions. Sites could easily double or triple prices and lose no business.
Unhappy with short lives of so many images.
Unhappy with loss of StockXpert as an independent.

My wish list.

-Lose the ability to see who's selling how much.
-Lose the ability to see which images sell the most.
-Triple subscription rates or at least 1/3 the allowable downloads.
-Double all other prices.
-Develop an industry standard for Metadata and submission standards or at least all sites should review their submission procedures to get rid as many clicks as possible. So many procedures are a total time waster.
-Bury the need to apply categories.
-Police the images they are entrusted with more vigorously.
-Tighten licensing so more EL sales occur.
-Get rid of or increase prices for the smaller size downloads. We get ripped off big time on those sales. They are too useful on the web a prices that are far too cheap.
-Get some contributors to understand that you can't take a magazine cover to the bank to get a loan with it. Income trumps fame.

Many macros do research for image buyers and I don't think they charge for that research. It allows image buyers to easily narrow down to the image they need without having to search droves of images. Paying a hundred or two for an image in many cases doesn't add up to hill of beans.

How would you feel when you pull up in your 40.000$ car and your neighbour says, I had that exact car last week for 50$ a day I remember the plate, when you thought by going to the higher end Dealer you was getting a car that had not been a part of a hire fleet, and the mileage was only the delivery miles, would you say the dealer was un-ethical?

David
David,

The thing is,no one is selling feelings. Look at plane tickets. They drive you mad with price differences, does that stop fliers?

1274
Agencies have been going out of business for many many years. It would obviously be a stupid statement to say that micro is not affecting the macro market. However the economy is a much bigger problem right now. I see my micro sales falling and I see my macro sales falling.

Alamy.com / Re: I got first sale on Alamy
« on: June 23, 2009, 23:09 »

Does that math really work for Alamy? How much in microstock dribbles have you made while you've been waiting for your first $250 Alamy payout?

It can work, but not for the same style of image. Although Alamy makes some good sales of commercial images, the bread and butter tend to be more editorial in nature, at least for me. You know the ones, "not suitable for stock".
