I still watch their briefs each day and sometimes submit, and I still find it a source of ideas. Me too but have never been selected. I just submitted 10 images to the brief 'Desert near Jerusalem' as I was there in February. Wish me luck!

Meanwhile there are countries like india where it's straight up illegal to fly a drone They also have 1 billion population. I'm looking at taking it to some remote parts of Brazil where there's few people and stunning landscapes. Worst case scenario just bribe a cop (50 reais or $25 is the usual price these days)!

Good luck with the Drone! Too many restrictions in the U.S. to even bother with them now. All Federal parks off-limit and most State and City parks off limits. I wanna take it up to Lake Como and some vistas on the mountains

Well, here we are in August and my downloads are still completely horrible. I'm talking single dollars a day with almost 5,000 assets. Yesterday: $7. Nothing for me is recovering, so whatever they did to the search seems to be permanent. Third straight month of significant loss with SS. Yeah, I can relate. I had a great May / June and horrible July with August improving slightly. Anyway, as Steve Heap has commented lately on his blog: Whereas in the past you could have argued that your portfolio would continue to earn money year after year, and new images would add to that income, the new normal now seems to be that you work each year to add new images just to keep your income about the same. For the effort involved, it is still nice money especially if you like photographing things and places but the business model does seem to have changed along the way. I can see soon when it will new material so you will only earn a little bit less each month! I'm looking for opportunities elsewhere in Midstock and fine art, also learning footage, including getting a new drone soon.

Sorry, No sales in Eight Days Now. How many images do you have in your portfolio? If you could provide us with a link perhaps we could have a better idea where you could improve.

For whoever may be interested, I just wrote a blog post on turning the right editorial images into commercial images, which tend to be generally much more valuable.

Are you saying this as a general for editorials with people in or just these surf ones? Here's one I submitted recently as commercial.

But i also think I took on board what was said during my last 2 weeks in Bangkok and I think i got some different results. Thanks again. Good luck! You'll be back travelling soon enough

Funny how people don't think when they have high sales that SS is manipulating the system....thats down to their brilliant photography of course ;-) This is also known as the 'Headwinds Paradox', interesting paper on the subject: http://psycnet.apa.org/record/2016-56495-001Synopsis: Barriers and hindrances command attention because they have to be overcome; benefits and resources can often be simply enjoyed and largely ignored. As a result of this headwind/tailwind asymmetry, Democrats and Republicans both claim that the electoral map works against them (Study 1), football fans take disproportionate note of the challenging games on their teams schedules (Study 2), people tend to believe that their parents have been harder on them than their siblings are willing to grant (Study 3), and academics think that they have a harder time with journal reviewers, grant panels, and tenure committees than members of other subdisciplines (Study 7). We show that these effects are the result of the enhanced availability of peoples challenges and difficulties (Studies 4 and 5) and are not simply the result of self-serving attribution management (Studies 6 and 7). We also show that the greater salience of a persons headwinds can lead people to believe they have been treated unfairly and, as a consequence, more inclined to endorse morally questionable behavior

I averaged 10 a day in July (slow month), usually it's 12/13 a day.
So 0 in any given day is unlikely but statistically possible. Kinda reminds me of the martingale system in roulette where you put a minimum stake on black/red and double everytime you lose until reaching the table limits. The probability of the same colour showing up 4 times in a row is 5.6%.

This amount of public scrutiny is precisely why some companies prefer to stay as private instead of going public!

the inside of an airport terminal would be considered private property. Absolutely, it's private property. As for whether commercial photography is permitted, they make it quite clear on their website that commercial photography requires a fee + permit. Is editorial photography considered 'commercial'? Yes, I think so but some may interpret it different. Here's the key paragraph: An applicable fee will be charged for all commercial filming and photography - excluding accredited news media and any filming or photography being done on behalf of Heathrow's business partners. Public liability insurance is required for any filming or photography at Heathrow. Whilst we consider each request received, there will be times when we will be unable to accommodate your request due to security or operational considerations. If your request is authorised, you will receive a permit via email which must be shown to any member of Heathrow staff or the Police who request to see it while you are at the airport. If you fail to present the relevant permit, you will be asked to leave the airport. http://mediacentre.heathrow.com/filming_permits Therefore, I'm in clear breach of Heathrow's regulations by licensing the images commercially. At the time I'm shooting they may ask whether it's for commercial purposes and I can simply state that it's for personal use, which is suspicious given the full-frame camera + professional lens. As for Shutterstock, they have covered themselves as it appears that Heathrow has not expressly requested to be included in that list of places that won't allow for either commercial or editorial photographs. Heathrow likely cannot go after Shutterstock for this breach due to privity of contract at common law but they may go after me but highly doubt they'll ever bother considering there's 1000s of stock photos of London airports.

Customers are not going anywhere. They're canceling their subscriptions or stopped downloading on demand images. Would you also say that it's a factor that since the images are RF, some clients choose to re-use some images for different projects and eventually they already have a large selection of images at their disposal that there's no real business need to purchase new licenses? Perhaps if they need a new type of image not found anywhere then they'll search but otherwise just look through their archives.

After that you will see how RPI (return per image) decreasing.. and decreasing It doesn't matter, you'll be sipping cocktails on the beach watching those 38cent subs roll in

. Very nice image. Though I'm curious how you can get away submitting photos like that for stock, even as editorial. One of the very few restrictions on editorial images is that you can't photograph on private property. And I would think that the interior of an airport terminal would be considered private property. Did you manage to get a signed property release? I took a few photos inside some overseas airport terminals myself recently but I doubt I can use them for stock (well not legally.) No, I didn't obtain any permission. I just consulted Shutterstock's known restriction list (link below) and Heathrow airport doesn't feature, therefore editorial submissions appear to be OK. https://www.shutterstock.com/blog/contributor-resources/legal/stock-photo-restrictions/

it would be difficult to guess which languages would work best, unless you have an obvious bias in sales location. That's a great tip as many of my images are in Italy it makes sense translate them to Italian to appeal to the local market
