123RF / Re: How is everyone doing on 123RF
« on: August 01, 2012, 12:13 »
Down 31% from June 2012, but up 89% from July 2011 so at least the long-term trend is in the right direction (with increased uploads).

No BMEs, but BMYs for $$$ at BS and iS (best there in 18 months).  Way up over July 2011 (+68%), roughly in accordance with portfolio growth (+64%).  ELs at iS and SS, and even a small sale at Alamy with a very small port.  Most sites holding steady, except for CS, which was way down, and Veer, which was 0.  Have made more so far this year than all of last year so no complaints.

Veer / Re: Changes to Keywords
« on: July 31, 2012, 09:04 »
it's a wonder they are still alive and kicking

I'm not sure that they are.  I had a BME there last month but this month nothing - neither alive nor kicking.

I guess it's time to reconsider uploading there.

I stopped uploading there a while ago.  Reviews are too slow and bad when they come in.  They rejected 80% of my last two batches, all for the same reason - just didn't appeal to them.  The only ones they accepted were landscapes, which in my experience never sell there.  Weird.  No need to reconsider - just stop until things change.

As for the keywords, I haven't checked on mine.  I'm now trying to front-load my keywords for those agencies that accept fewer and truncate them.  Not bothering with Veer any more.

Veer / Re: Veer Submission Limits
« on: July 30, 2012, 14:52 »
Mine was 50 a week but went to 10 a few weeks ago with no explanation or warning.  Interestingly, about the same time Crestock went from 10 a week to 50.  Review times for my last batches to Veer were around 6-8 weeks so they clearly have issues.  I stopped uploading to both a while ago due to:
1. Too long review times
2. Inconsistent and sometimes weird review results, and
3. Mainly lack of sales, especially for Crestock.  I had a BME at Veer in June but haven't had a single DL there this month - probably won't bother uploading there again until they show some signs of life.  They have one of the highest RPDL numbers for me so I hope things pick up, but right now their summer slowdown has become the summer stop.

A quick Google search found a page for camera blimps - http://www.aerialproducts.com/blimps/camera-blimps.html .  Who knew?  Looks like they mostly are used for security but obviously could be adapted for stock.  Not cheap but not too expensive for a small one.

Alamy.com / Re: Large description area?
« on: July 21, 2012, 08:49 »
I use it if I've digitally modified an image - I put what the modification is in the description so any changes made will be known to a buyer.  I doubt if it helps with sales but covers me in case someone buys it and wants to know whether and how it has been changed.

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT's official policy on 'similars'?
« on: July 09, 2012, 12:58 »
As discussed earlier in the thread, I'm convinced it's an algorithm that is comparing shapes, composition, colors, keywords, etc.  Spacing "similars" out over time, won't help.  The computer -- not the reviewer, whether newbie or veteran -- will catch them and kick them out.

I'm going to test that hypothesis with my next batch and will see what happens...

General Stock Discussion / Re: Fotolia Rejections
« on: July 09, 2012, 12:56 »
Lately I find them easier than SS.  Out of my last 100 images submitted there 87 were accepted, almost all for technical problems, and usually the weakest of the batch so no complaints.  For comparison, SS accepted only 67 of the same images and only 2 out of my last ten (ouch!), the worst there in about the past 2.5 years.  I don't think it's anything general just the luck of the draw on reviewers.

123RF / Re: Missing Funds
« on: July 06, 2012, 19:41 »
My balance decreased by a few dollars for no reason a few days ago.  I couldn't find any refunds, the amount just decreased.  At least it wasn't as much as yours!  I hope it's just a server issue that will be restored soon.  If it's happened to two of us there are probably a lot of others...

I send RF images to all sites including Alamy.  RF editorial images go to the micros that accept them but not Alamy (hardy ever do those due to the newsworthy requirement at SS). RM images to Alamy only.

General Stock Discussion / Re: June Microstock Earnings
« on: July 01, 2012, 09:51 »
No BMEs for $$$ but steady at most sites.  Just missed a BME at DT.  BME for DLs at FT and tied my BME for DLs at CS, but $$$ way down at both due to low RPD.  Overall about 10% down from last month, but up 71% from June 2011 so no complaints.

#1: SS
#2: iS  (~51% of SS with estimated PP earnings)
#3: DT  (43% of SS)
#4: 123  (33% of SS)
all others 11% of SS or less.

DepositPhotos / Re: Depositphotos breaks 8 million milestone
« on: June 22, 2012, 08:54 »
The subs percentage is an interesting question, so I just checked.  For me, 81% subs.  Don't know how many were free.  I didn't add up the percentage for revenue, but it would be quite different.  I've had some decent credit sales there and even an EL.  It's ahead of BigStock for me and I've been with BS longer.  Easy uploading and fast, reasonable reviews.  Like everyone else of course would prefer higher prices and more sales but they do seem to be up and coming.

BTW, for comparison this month for me SS has been 95% subs in terms of DLs so DP actually is much better for subs percentage even though it lags in total revenue.

CanStockPhoto.com / Re: CS Categories - Worth it or not?
« on: June 22, 2012, 08:35 »
Thanks for weighing in , Duncan.  I routinely associate photos with series as appropriate, and it takes very little time.  In order to facilitate the assignment of categories, it would help tremendously if we could select a number of photos - presumably with a check box - and assign categories to the selected photos in one operation, much like the assignment of photos to a series.  In fact, maybe you can look at combining the two functionalities.  It might be a good idea to keep the option of assigning categories to individual photos, but having to select categories for one photo at a time in a newly-uploaded batch is cumbersome and time-consuming.

+1
We don't mind extra work if it results in more sales.  I wasn't aware of the series but now am making some - we will see if it helps.  Thanks for starting this thread - it was very useful.

CanStockPhoto.com / Re: CS Categories - Worth it or not?
« on: June 19, 2012, 23:04 »
I always liked CanStock because it doesn't bother about categories - I didn't realize you could assign them.  I never have.  My sales there are about 12% what I do on Shutterstock - about the same as the poll.  My guess is it doesn't matter.

Yes. The button is tied to the search terms, which is part of the problem. If you search for a red apple and hit the flag button instead of the add to lightbox button it is flagged for the words red and apple.

That explains a lot - thanks.  I've had images flagged for keywords twice and both times the "offending" keyword was fine.  One was an underwater picture taken at the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, flagged for the keyword "Australia".  I forget the other one.  Both times the flagger had no images in their portfolio, so I thought they were someone out to get a keyword-reporting bonus.  However, with your information it seems more likely they were a buyer who just hit the wrong button - makes more sense.  I responded with a note both times and never heard anything back.  I try to be careful with my keywords but occasionally get a bad one in there, especially if copying from a similar image, but so far haven't been flagged for one that really was bad.

1291
You'll have to check with each agency individually.  Most of them mail out a tax form in January, at least in the U.S. - not sure about other countries.  If not, they usually have a tax center on their web site where you and view or request a copy for tax purposes.  DT doesn't seem very good about this and doesn't mail anything out unless you are over a certain amount.  If you haven't received anything, I would go to each site and look for their tax page, then send them a message if necessary.  The backup plan (for me at least) is to use Paypal receipts - provides a summary of what was paid out.  Good luck!

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT still messed up?
« on: June 13, 2012, 07:35 »
They are holding steady for me.  So far this year every month has been higher than the monthly average for last year and last month was a BME.  The higher RPD is keeping revenue higher even though number of sales is down.  This year they have made up a little under 9% of all earnings, in 4th place overall.  But I agree that inconsistency is the key word - DT and CS have the highest variance in earnings for me.  Over the past six months my earnings at DT have varied more than 7 fold.  I just hope their business model is sustainable and the decent earnings continue.

New UK rules for website owners regarding troll identification:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18404621

This is interesting, and I think it's a good thing.  People should not be able to say negative things about others anonymously.  We need a similar law in the US...

1294
Thanks, that's good to know.  All these different credit schemes are much too confusing for me...

1295
Had a BME there last month by quite a lot.  So far this month sales are slow but the higher values are keeping total revenue OK.  The thing that worries me is that all of my credit sales lately are from 2010 credits - maybe they expire and people are using them up?  I hope people are buying more because I like the higher returns per DL - DT is usually my number 3 or 4 site.

1296
Had a BME there last month but so far this month only one sub sale...

Featurepics.com / Re: Any Sales Recently?
« on: June 06, 2012, 08:37 »
2010, 4 sales for $10.50
2011, 3 sales for $2.80
2012, 7 sales for $8.50

Sales from $0.35 to $4 at 50% commission
RPDL over all sales $1.48, second highest of all the sites I contribute to after Veer

I stopped uploading for a while because I could only get 2 or 3 to go at a time and ftp didn't work, plus I had no sales for ten months from May 2011 through Feb 2012.  I've had from 1-3 sales per month starting this March and started uploading again with now more than 570 images.  With ftp working, easy uploading, fast and reasonable reviews it doesn't take much additional time to keep them in the workflow.  I like supporting a site with 50% commissions and may get a payout in the next year or so (assuming they last that long).  Not sure if the recent uptick in sales is due to marketing or a small-sample statistical anomaly, but I hope it continues.

1298
I have a BME so far at DT - number of sales is a bit low, but RPDL with the level changes is much higher.  Of course I'd prefer more sales, but fewer DLs for more money is OK too.

Also a BME at DP due to my first-ever EL there, other sites holding steady so no complaints.  Much better than April.

1299
It would be interesting if they had image exclusivity, nominated by the reviewers, allowing us to opt out or in if an image is nominated.  That would keep it highly selected and targeted but still give contributors the option of whether they want to be included.  I would certainly consider specific image exclusivity at SS or BS but am very leery of total exclusivity.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock site mail
« on: May 21, 2012, 10:53 »
Most likely a scam - someone really interested would have written about specific images.

Ask them to send you their e-mail address so you can initiate contact.  I have a hotmail account I use for anything I think might be suspicious - I check it once every couple of months just in case but otherwise don't use it except for spam.  I wouldn't give them an address that you really use, and certainly not a phone number.
