What if... you signed up under a different account, uploaded a couple of low-sale disposable shots... and then started commenting on your main own images, just in time to get them on the front page when the buyers on the East and West Coast come in the office and had their first coffee?  ::)

Wicked, but feasable.

I can see the corporate buying pattern over time of day very well on ShutterStock where you have many downloads per day. On the West Coast are the most voracious buyers, and in Europe (CET) just 10%.

I wait till they have FTP. I can't imagine that almost 160K images were already uploaded by hand. It's beyond my understanding how a garage operation like Geckostock can come up with FTP in a couple of weeks and SV can't.  :o

I don't know anything about business but I guess you have to take a volatile market like microstock with shock and awe, not with a series of press releases how good it all will be... 6 months from now. They missed their take off slot and many mice got the first cheese already.

For you it's free of course. Let's call it fairy use  ;D

Hi folks, I'm a hellper dude on Canstock....
I believe FlemishDreams has asked about the order of keywords on the CanStockPhoto forum
Hey Bennym.  ;)
Yap it was me but I can't change my nick on CanStockPhoto.
Let's leave the sales issue aside; I think Duncan can read Alexa too.

The 15 keyword thing, or keyword relevance is really a bold move that will benefit search efficiency. CanStockPhoto is now the second, after Fotolia. I have been hammering on this for almost 2 years. In a database of 3-5 million you end up with tens of result pages for most searches. CanStockPhoto is in the advantage here with a lean portfolio; so it can start from scratch.

I guess we'd better continue this at the CanStockPhoto forum.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Inspector's monitor choice
« on: February 26, 2008, 07:50 »
The CRT is so much more accurate with color, than the LCD.  I notice that with some images, noise levels show up a lot more on the LCD as well - then when I view the same image on the CRT it looks perfect.

Well that's because an LCD has a higher contrast than a CRT. I always process my own shots on an LCD, also to see banding. If it's OK there, it will be very OK on CRT. Anyways, for web use, most customers will use LCD, so what's the point of doing postprocessing on CRT?

This message might be helpful. What do you guys use to calibrate an LCD?

I'm confident this is the same across all agencies.
It's like that on BigStock too. Although I like to look on my LCD for banding since it has higher contrast.

Wen I shoot in the studio, I use Nikon Capture which bypasses the card altogether and the image goes streight to the laptop.
How? Does your D200 has wireless?

« on: February 26, 2008, 07:29 »
Two of the pins on my D200 disapeared into the camera body. It took Nikon 3 weeks to fix it under warrenty.
When it happened I googled it and found hundreds of people have had problems with bent or missing pins on both Nikon and Cannon.
Well you must live in the US and that's fast. I have a D200 too and I read horror stories on the main Belgian forum about people having to wait 3 months for repair since European support is done in Thailand. I just hate to take the card out the cam. I can live with a 30 min wait for the USB transfer but a 3 month wait for a cam repair would kill me.

Nah, there are many budget carriers in Europe now. The real problem are hotel prices in Moscow and safety concerns.

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT subs model
« on: February 26, 2008, 04:47 »
I will guess that it will be locked once DT gets up in the morning.
Yes, they closed it around 10am CET. What we can conclude from this is that Nikutu is not an early riser.  ;)

On topic: the subs might take your average per image down, but make your total rise. As Serban argued in another thread, subs are a different market and there is no indication at all an image on sub would be bought on per image sale for a higher price. Since sub images seem to be downloaded for comps and most aren't actually used, it's a good suggestion to exclude the larger sizes from sub sales.

The pins in the slot are the weak point and like all mechanical things, they are only designed for a certain numbers of operations. My very first digicam (Minolta) had it; the eject button broke too, then a pin bended. The repair would cost much more than the residual value of the cam, so I just left it with the shop.

For now, I leave my 4G card just in the cam as much as possible. Better safe than sorry. Transfer might be slow, but waiting for a Nikon to be repaired in the Thailand factory will take longer.

the lower performing sites like craphamlet and the like

Since I was the first to creatively craft the word CrapHamlet, it's copyrighted. You can buy a license on the word for 0.25cents per forum post but in your case I would suggest an extended license  ;D

Caveat - joke  ;)

The 15-keyword limit is certainly innovative. Great move. Making the site buyer-oriented is great too. Forum links shouldn't be on the frontpage.

With exceptional image requirements, CanStockPhoto seems to do a remake of the Crestock strategy. You can, alas, not find enough people that want to sell their top work for 25 dollarcents. At least I won't anymore.

CanStockPhoto is heading for disaster; see this this blog article, especially the Alexa ratings tending to zero after begin 2006. The rather unwelcoming attitude of Duncan towards contributors doesn't help too. I still remember his warning on the CanStockPhoto forum that the accounts of critical forum posters would vanish suddenly.

In short, you can't set forth rules like a market leader if you're a market trailer.

One month without any sale on FP now, quite unusual. I normally have 2,3,4 per month. It isn't the season because DT did very well for me the past month. The Alexa ratings show a down trend too. Anybody else with the same impression?

Same thing in Lightroom but I do reorder them manually in FT. It's worth it! Just good business.  :)
OMG, that Fotolia interface is sooo slow, and it will order your tags only on the site, not in your IPTC. I got so tired end 2006 to sort them on the site I wrote a script just for that, and save the sorted tags into my IPTC.

FlemishDreams
Can you elaborate on how to best use that link in ur post?
Looks interesting.
The MIZ

Apparently many people use FlemishTagger looking into my bandwidth logs. Well, there must be many lurkers around on forums ;-)

I wrote the script for myself actually, 1.5 years ago after finding out the 7-keyword Fotolia thing. It seemed to me that more sites would adopt this priority scheme sooner or later, and anyways it's only 10 sec extra work clicking the keywords in the right order.

The whole thing actually started with LO end of 2006 when they had problems with inter-keyword separators. I first wrote the script to easily output the list comma, comma-space, semicolon, or newline separated. You can do that with notepad or MSWord too of course, but you can make typos and you have to type. I'm very lazy by nature and just like to click ;-)

Then I added sorting, and finally spell check plus templates. There is also a high-watermark when you exceed 50 (or whatever) keywords.

The help files probably reflect those "organic" changes over time and aren't that clear any more. If anybody is really interested, I would streamline the help.
It has some hidden Easter eggs, like highlighting incompatible keywords for ShutterStock. Once got a warning for that.

I'm currently looking into the Princeton lexical database of synonyms and  more/less general terms to suggest extra keywords and maybe disambiguation. I think Duncan's heuristic method on CanStockPhoto is basically flawed. But for now, I'm just concentrating on my port for a while ;-)

There's a thread here somewhere about microstockwatcher - look that up - that guy's about 1 year ahead of you

That guy quit, after having enough sales:

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

As of 1 January 2008, we regrettably can no longer provide support for or sell MicroStock Watcher.

We sincerely thank all those who expressed interest in the project, and -- more importantly -- those of you who purchased a copy.  If you are interested in taking over the project, please email marc {at} bedouinventures {dot} com.

I'm always worried about those sites that ask $$, like CushyStock... then abandon the project and leave you there with less $$ and an outdated database.

If it's any consolation, I love this shot.  I had the chance to go to Slovinia this year but had to pass it over due to lack of money!  I'm going to have to go back, to add exactly this sort of iconic shot to my portfolio!

The location and framing is great, but the shot totally lacks pop-up and a dramatic sky. I know it's stupid, but buyers buy on thumbnails and they should be overdone a bit.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Database to manage photos

But I reckon I could start with a little widget...  I'm so annoyed with the iStock one that just doesn't work.  It would be nice to have all the sites earnings displayed on my dashboard all the time.
Me thinks that's the way to go. It would suffice that people logged in on all sites, then let the widget do the parsing, reporting to the database, and the presentation.
The only bad thing for you as a programmer is to keep track of the parsing, as a few sites tend to change layout now and then.

Please keep us posted about all this! And don't forget to take photos too  ::)

Of course it does.  But then so is giving our credit card over the bar when we're on holiday - but we all do that.  Life is all about risks.
And sometimes the sh*t hits the fan, like that day of infamy in 2005 when my Visa was copied in a prestigious mall in the Philippines. When I got home months later, about 10,000$ was gone. Visa didn't want to repay since it was more than 3 months ago.

Pardon me now, but I walk around with cash. Thousands of it in my ripped jeans. I just got allergic and paranoid about plastic and online transactions. It took me 1,5 year before I finally took that Paypal.

By the way, you tend to downplay it but the scripts on your site are just fantastic. As a php-contributor to CPG with karma 5, I can really appreciate the great job you did, both the implementation and the creative idea behind it.

Adobe Stock / Re: ID requested?
« on: February 22, 2008, 16:39 »
What Phishing or fraud on a contributor's part are they addressing with this requirement?
Somebody that hacked your Paypall email won't probably know your address. If he does... of course he can always Photoshop an ID. That's why basically scanned MRFs and IDs are useless. Anybody can easily fake a scan in PS. If you have over 1-2000$ on an account, it's worthwhile. For 100$, they won't do it, so in these cases, an ID might still be a good idea.

Software - General / Re: Jpeg and isolation?
« on: February 22, 2008, 16:31 »
I just discover that some of my isolation whit the pen tool was correct just before saving them.

But after saving them at the maximum quality ... I open the saved file reselect the 255 background (select tool always at 0) and then I see several areas who aren't properly isolated.

Yap, I posted about it here and on the SS forum. I had examples but can't show them any more because I was banned on Flickr. Basically, it's a jpg artifact. Select the white with the Magic Wand Tool: tolerance 0, ant-alias and contiguous off. On the TIF you will see a nice isolation.

Save it as JPG maximal quality. Load that JPG and do the same. You will see small non-white (254,255,254 or so) dithers around the edge.

On SS I was advised to do clipping paths.
