Certainly time consuming but if it improves sales by even 10% I think it's worth it. I did key word some in a rush the first time round.

I think that it may even be more profitable for you to clone out some logos from some of the images and try submitting as commercial. Most editorials have a really short shelf life. I can't comment on still product photography as it's really not my area, but perhaps someone else in the forum would be happy to. Abs e boa sorte com as suas fotos, qualquer dvida fique a vontade em entrar em contato. 1279
Photo Critique / Re: Shutterstock Portfolio critique needed. Thanks in advance.« on: July 30, 2017, 07:17 »Quote You have a nice portfolio, i am a noob to send you the right way, but im guessing that you are doing something right in order to sell editorials I speak on my blog quite a bit about selling editorials, I trust you'll find the information useful. The key is that if you don't have a model or property release it's not so easy to turn it into an editorial and submit...it needs to tell a story. Like most of my images, a small percentage make a large percentage of revenue (20:80). I travel quite a bit and I'm often shooting at airports (careful that security don't harass me)...these tend to do quite well. Here's an example from Heathrow Terminal 5. Otherwise look out for what's happening in town. If you're in London you would do well to photograph London's biggest Asian food hall, which opened on July 10th - http://www.bangbangoriental.com/ http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/first-look-at-londons-biggest-asian-food-hall-a7854461.html I'll probably be in London soon and will check it out but probably too late! ![]() 1280
Photo Critique / Re: Shutterstock Portfolio critique needed. Thanks in advance.« on: July 30, 2017, 07:13 »Quote When you said that the sailing and concert photos are quite niche but technically seems OK, what do you really want to mean? Can you explain me? It means that you're appealing to a very small demographic of buyers. Sometimes that's great because if the images are rare then your image is more likely to be selected. However, for both events perhaps there were press photographers already at the events with better angles. Technically OK means you did a good job with the composition, lighting, focus which isn't easy in low-light conditions at the concert and on a moving boat. 1281

Hi Cicero,
Welcome to the forum. Quote I sold 80 just in Shutterstock, earned about 25 dollars and so far I'm happy about the results. They say that 'the secret to happiness is low expectations' Quote Feel free to see it and to give me your feedback. Will do! Well, some of your editorial stuff is interesting. I particularly like the EU flags on the foreground with Big Ben on the background. I've been trying to capture similar images for ages. That's very much in the news and will continue to be for some time to come. Some of your protest stuff is OK but awful captions and key words: "Manisfestation against Brexit and Trump." The word 'manifestation' means something completely different in English. As for keywords, you need to really think harder about what buyers will be searching and "donald", "life" "up" is just spamming. The sailing and concert are quite niche but technically seem OK. The fact that you failed to put the full name of the singer as a keyword is quite disappointing but you can still go back and insert, if you wish. Good luck and you'll hopefully be earning $25 a day soon! Alex 1285

Hi Xenupy,
I always say, don't take pics of pets unless done extraordinarily and I must admit that you've done a great job with those. You've also nailed the composition on many of these, so good work. As for the cityscapes, I like how you incorporated your own style...but they may just a bit too unique for buyers in terms of your post-processing. Makes me think that they belong more in the fine art collection of another agency than microstock (and I say that as a compliment). Keep going and producing more...170 images is a drop in the ocean but with 180 downloads and $70 that's a nice RPI, so producing more "stocky" work at higher volumes will certainly yield some nice profits. I think it's great that you're trying everything but sooner or later you'll want to focus more on one or two subject matters. I also have issues that I shoot too many different things because I find it more interesting. Good luck Alex 1286

I'm making a huge effort to turn almost 3000 images from poor discoverability to good without spamming. Not easy.
Anybody else had more success after doing so? I'm using the following keywording tool which seems excellent: https://www.keyword.io/tool/stock-photo-research 1287
Photo Critique / Re: Just another SS Portfolio Critique Wanted :)« on: July 28, 2017, 07:40 »Quote Thank you. Do you think, uploading more shots with people (mostly editorial), for instance in cities would make a difference? It depends on the shots. I find that illustrative editorials can be highly profitable for years to come, but you must research ahead of time what stands out in a certain city then work around that. For example, I was in Cannes last summer and took some shots of the neighborhood around where the film festivals takes place, including the marine. Does do OK. I saw you have some editorials of lisbon with the typical trams, probably too many of those around and better quality. The best editorials are news, so try to find an angle when u do travel. I was in Israel in feb and shot tons of pics of security forces around holy places and now that things are kicking off in that crazy part of the world, these images are selling regularly. Good luck Alex 1288
Photo Critique / Re: Just another SS Portfolio Critique Wanted :)« on: July 28, 2017, 06:09 »Quote So far I have about 30 downloads a month, making 10$. I'm also a travel photographer so I hope I can help. Good news: Your images are bright and vibrant which is good...they show up nicely on thumbnails. You have some nice tilt shift aerial stuff. keep shooting more of those and try to find new angles on already popular places - not easy to do but if done well you should be able to rank highly for some important keywords. I see you have a drone and it's still a new market so exploit as much as you can (and legally) these types of images. Bad news: Flowers, your dog (it's beautiful by the way), snapshots of beach...pretty ordinary stuff and difficult to make money with those as there's just too many of these - except for the beautiful waves at Algarve. You were also shooting some of the beach at harsh midnight sunlight thus diminishing its value. I like your style, keep going! Hopefully you will get a $50+ license soon, probably on your aerial stuff. This should help you stay motivated to keep submitting 100 images a month for the next 2 years or so. By then you should be making $200-400 a month, but who knows how profitable micros is going to be in a few years... 1289

General Stock Discussion / Re: Market research« on: July 27, 2017, 10:43 »
These days I just watch/read the local and national news to see what's going on and plan my shoots around that, here's some themes I've picked up lately:
- Higher security around landmarks + transport hubs - Protesting at austerity / right-wing policies (see the latest LGTB news from the US). - Troubles in Jerusalem (lucky I was there in Feb and have some pics I overlooked and submitted recently) - Refugee crisis (in Europe) - Young people taking selfies at landmarks - Latest pieces of technology (illustrative editorials) The above are editorials on their own right and can be turned into commercial with some effort. The above aren't a recipe for making money but a good start instead of shooting in the dark or worse, taking snapshots of beaches, pets, flags and flowers. I do read what the sites publish but if the top contributors are also reading it then surely after a few weeks will be a 'fad'? 1293

Adobe Stock / Re: What's up with Adobe / Fotolia?« on: July 25, 2017, 03:54 »Quote With Adobe and SS that dont mean anything nowadays! the keep uploading and uploading concept used to give results up to a few years ago. Today with millions added every month just forget it. I've had images sell right after being uploaded on Fotolia. It depends on the subject matter...in any case it's really tough and I believe it's only going to get tougher at micros, that's why I'm looking to diversify into footage, midstock (RF/RM), fine art. Shutterstock.com / Re: When sales have totally tanked on SS« on: July 23, 2017, 08:43 »Quote This is a good point. When the critical mass is spiraling down it is next to impossible beat it in its own bubble. Looking for alternatives is certainly what I am doing as well. I have little technical knowledge (web design, shopping carts, etc.) which is keeping me at bay until I figure out how to move forward with alternative strategies. RM is but one avenue but I am getting into motion graphics with sliders and holy grail type time lapses, but it's expensive and time consuming. I enjoy it but have a day job too. How about footage? |
