iStockPhoto.com / Re: Downloads per month
« on: September 14, 2007, 19:47 »
One of my goals is to have at least 20 images with 10 DL/month. I dipped down to as low as 15 over the summer, but things are looking better now (currently at 22).

I've occasionally had stuff at 100+ DL/month, but successes like that are few and far between. My current top seller is at 88.8 - if I was into numerology I'd be ultrahappy with that number.

...I currently have 5 images at over 50dls/month and 10 at over 100dls/month.
That's fantastic, fotografer ... way to go!

Shutterstock.com / SS programming egg?
« on: September 14, 2007, 18:29 »
I recently began overhauling my SS portfolio, and one of the things I'm doing is appending stuff to the 'Description:' field. One of the words I'm adding is "Shutterstock', and their dictionary doesn't recognize it as a valid word, so it offers up this suggestion:

The word Shutterstock in the 'Description' field may be misspelled. Suggested alternate spellings are Shutterstock, Shutter-stock, Shittiest, Shortest, Headstock, Shortstop, Feedstock, Rootstock, Chattiest, Shadiest. If the spelling is correct, make no changes and click the Save button again.

Try it yourself, I'm not making this up!

...Sounds like IS wasn't always super picky as they are now.
You can say that again - there's just no way that some of their older images would be currently be accepted!

I don't know anything about large scale database/server implementation.
Why is mySQL not a good choice, and what would be better?

... I've probably only got half on my portfolio with them but will definatly be going through the rest when I have time and uploading more images.
You may want to hold off on that until the reviewing gets back to normal and the current backlog is gone.

This seems a borderline call to me.

Most businesses allow purchasers to return goods they aren't satisfied with, the notable exceptions being digital format items (software, games, music, DVDs, ...). Should stock photography allow returns? I can see how a consumer might find a stock agency more attractive if they had a no questions asked money back guarantee. The potential for abuse is very high, and I hope (but doubt) that any agency that has such a return policy also has the staff and tools available to ensure that it isn't being abused.

Way to go with the success, guys, I hope it happens like this everywhere for you!

StockXpert is still near the bottom for me (< 5 $/day), but it's shown a little life in the past week.

« on: September 13, 2007, 22:33 »
Thanks, pixart!

BigStock featured me when I resumed uploading there as a backup plan in case FT completely tanked out. I wish they had done it when I had more than 200 images there, but what can ya do. I garnished a few sales from it, and am hoping that I will do the same from being in this gallery - every little bit helps!

I didn't know BigStock had a gallery like this until I read their email newsletter today. I was happy to see that hatman12 has an image in there (congrats, hatman!), and even happier to see that I have 4!

Kinda strange that they picked two similar images of mine to put in there, huh?

Go here to check out the gallery. I didn't see any other familiar names from this forum - my apologies if I inadvertently left anyone out.

Looking at it another way, I think that all the "good" agencies are experiencing growing pains. If you're going to have problems, ones related to growth are the best kind to have.

Same problem. I use the Flash uploader. I copy/past the keywords in, but it sure is annoying.?
I've been having the same experience lately.
An annoying nuisance, but one that can easily be worked around.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Some thoughts.....
« on: September 10, 2007, 21:44 »
Just like you as well, I haven't had a newly accepted iStock image sell in a very long time.
I'm in that club, too. 56 sales for 84 images uploaded in August. Not an encouraging success rate, especially when 30 of the sales came from just three images.

On the flipside, I've had Shutterstock accept images, put them up online and they've sold within hours of being posted.   argh.
I'm not so sure you can compare IS and SS in that way - their business models are completely different. Images on SS sell faster and in greater quantity, but IS images have a much longer life span. Either that or no life at all.

I love hearing good news like this - someone should start a sticky thread where people can post their accomplishments.

...  Shutterstock has low payouts but I almost immediately started selling shots, and even though my portfolio there is very small (under 100 images) I've already had a couple of enhanced license sales at $20 each!  So I think my focus will now be there, ...
Just be aware that you'll have to constantly upload to SS in order to keep your portfolio "alive" - sales will dramatically decline if you don't upload on at least a semi-regular basis.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: camera upgrade
« on: September 10, 2007, 13:46 »
I strongly suggest you get the IS version of the 70-200mm - especially if you are going to be frequently shooting from your boat.

I think that by and large, the quality of pictures is about equal with consumer and prosumer cameras. Some cameras may be marginally better or worse than others, but there's nothing about any of them that make them "bad" cameras. The best reason to upgrade is functionality - more expensive camera bodies perform faster and are easier to use.

I used to have a spare camera that I absolutely never used, so I sold it. Did the same thing with a bunch of my lenses, too.

Does the IS search engine look at Title and Description, or just at the Keword and Category fields?

Lighting / Re: Do you use the lens hood for isolations?
« on: September 09, 2007, 04:57 »
I'll second the comments protecting the lens.  You don't even have to drop a camera to appreciate that.  When you're moving around in a crowded room, or at a sports event I'd always rather bump the plastic lens hood than the filter/front element on something!
I'll third that - I just bought my 3rd lens hood for my 70-200mm!

Lighting / Re: What do you use for backing?
« on: September 09, 2007, 04:51 »
I use white formica,or nevermar, it is relatively cheap and very durable. If you spill on it it cleans easily. It can be had at any home improvement store. You can lay it flat, or create a sweep. My costs on seamless paper have dropped dramatically since I purchased this.
Paper rolls are great  for portrait work, but can be a real nuisance for product shots. If you want to shoot a lot of product, consider getting a product photography table - there are some good bargain units to be had. One of the best benefits of such a setup is that the tabletop is made of translucent plastic - you can easily provide bottom lighting and change colours to suit the situation.

Lighting / Re: Hallogen Floodlights for lighting
« on: September 09, 2007, 04:43 »
The bottom line here is that you're always going to be in a compromised situation if you use hot lights. Unless you're shooting video, strobes are the (proven) way to go. You think you're being smart and saavy by getting some cheap hot lamps, but, and to be sure, in the end you'll see the light.

Consider buying used strobes if you want to save money - if you buy hot lamps you will sooner or later regret it.

Does IS search only look at keywords, or title and description too?

I think it looks at the title too but not the description.  Some of my early titles were very poor and I have changed them.
Thanks for the tip, sharphot - I'd better get busy!
