Alamy.com / Re: Capitalized Keywords in Alamy (and Deepmeta)
« on: February 11, 2012, 15:45 »
Wow - thanks Les. That is a neat way of achieving the same end. I did have an export of my keywords, but the problem ones were some way down the list and so I didn't see the square brackets. I should have held back on all my typing!

So if you want to really look into the inner workings of the Lightroom catalog, then my blog tells you how to do it. Your way is a much simpler way of solving my particular issue!

Thanks

Alamy.com / Lightroom doesn't export all keywords
« on: February 11, 2012, 15:17 »
OK, much research later, I think I have got to the bottom of this. I was an early Lightroom user in version 1. In those days I added many of the basic keywords that we all start with - tree, flower, cat, washington, virginia, cloud, arizona etc. As Lightroom was enhanced through the versions, I upgraded and the database was converted as new functions were added. Somewhere along the way (I suspect between V1 and V2) Adobe must have enhanced the keyword tables to allow you to choose which keywords are exported. The initial ones in the database were set to "No." All new keywords appear to have the default of being exported. End result for me is that 3000 files are online with some of the most obvious keywords missing  :'(

Luckily, some sites pick up the words in the description and I probably put the obvious keywords there as well, but it is a bit of a bummer.

I've found a way to look at the underlying database in the Lightroom catalog and find which keywords are in this state. I've written a detailed post about how to do this if anyone thinks they have a similar issue:

http://www.backyardsilver.com/2012/02/strange-behavior-with-capitalized-keywords/

If you were a user of Lightroom 1, it may be worth checking this out.

Thanks Les. I'm struggling to find that magic bullet that tells me which other keywords are in this state. It is strange that of the four or five I have found, most of them had a capital first letter. I don't know what that is, and I'm at a loss to see how some really important keywords like "washington" were being ignored, but I'll have to live with the results and improve going forward.

If anyone knows of a way to look at the settings of all the keywords and identify those that are not being exported, please let me know!

Hi David

I did my test with one image. It appears that almost all issues are fixed. Graphic Leftovers failed because their FTP is down, same with Clipdealer.

The only one that appears to be set up correctly, but didn't distribute is Veer.

Thanks David

I've changed my channels for the sites you now use FTP for, and I noticed that I didn't have the "automatically submit on upload" button checked for Scanstock and Stockfresh - my mistake!

I'll test again now that I have hopefully fixed the issues.

Wow - I've found the problem, but have no idea what the underlying cause was. If you double click on a keyword in the Keyword list in Lightroom there is a check box called "Include on Export." If this is not checked, then the particular keyword does not get exported when you save to metadata or export to a JPEG. Amazing thing is that the two I have found so far - Kauai and Washington make up a big set of my images...

I think I have a lot of work to do...

Ahh, I think there is something else going on here. I see the keyword in Lightroom (it was Kauai as I just came back from there), but I don't see it in Shutterstock or Bigstock, and when I look at the JPEG itself in a file manager, I don't see it there either. So I need to work out why the "save metadata" and export functions in Lightroom aren't pushing a particular keyword into the JPEG file. Time to put my detective hat on and sorry for causing confusion.

The working ones are:

SS, DT, BS, Canstock, Yay, Panther, Cutcaster, iSign, Zoonar, Most, Photodune

The ones that don't work are:

Crestock, Veer, Clipdealer, Fotolia, Scanstock, Deposit, 123, Stockfresh

Some of these I set up as FTP, but appear to be connecting fine in the Channels section, except for 123 that never seems to connect at all.

Graphic Leftovers didn't work but I think their FTP is down.

Alamy.com / Capitalized Keywords in Alamy (and Deepmeta)
« on: February 10, 2012, 17:01 »
I came across a strange behavior today. I was always a bit bemused why some important keyword didn't get imported into Alamy when all the other ones were there. It turns out that if you have a Capitalized keyword like "Moon" it is ignored in the upload process. As I researched a bit more, I found that Deepmeta does the same thing - when you add files to Deepmeta and then go to the editor to convert to Istock defined vocabulary, the capitalized keywords are absent. Just why this is (and if it is just my computer I apologize!), I don't know, but I have posted a question on the Alamy forum to see if it is a known issue.

The core issue is that Lightroom only can store one version of a word, so if you already have a keyword called "Moon" and you type "moon" into a new file, it magically gets converted to "Moon" and so the problem continues. I haven't found a way to find all my images online with missing keywords (that would be a great program for someone to develop!), but I did research and find a way to get rid of the issue in Lightroom. I posted the instructions on my blog if you have this issue and don't know how to fix it: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2012/02/strange-behavior-with-capitalized-keywords/

Yes, it looks fine - the main four sites have been distributed now.

Is there an upper limit on the number of channels I can have? I still have a range of sites (including Veer, Deposit Photos, StockFresh) that have never distributed even though they are apparently properly registered with those sites for FTP.

Steve

Could you check the main sites. I have had my files distributed to 8 small sites, but none to SS, DT, BS CanStockPhoto

« on: February 05, 2012, 12:53 »
Good point - this reminded me to fill in the poll, and I realized that Alamy wasn't in the list of options, even though Panther and Zoonar (that sell at somewhat higher prices) are there. BTW - I know we have talked about Zoonar in the past, it did manage some sales last month. All of $31! Better than many of the smaller sites.

I'd vote to include Alamy in the list of sites.

Steve

1338
Maybe I wrote too early! After my successful experiment with one image, I uploaded the next 180, but they are not being distributed, at least so far. No worries just yet, but it has been about 10 hours since they arrived.

I'll update when I see some more progress.

Steve

1339
I tried an experiment tonight with one image - it got uploaded to 12 sites (not 123RF, nor Fotolia, Veer and a host of other sites). I have asked this of support in the past - is there a limit to the number of channels you can upload to?

As I said before, I would really pay for this service, but we need to know what its limits are.

However, it does depend on what the subject matter is, which also determines whether I upload as RM or to the Micros

I've got complete faith that click_click is talking about real earnings so I won't add to that debate..

What interests me is this comment pasted above. I take mainly travel, landscape and still life shots - few model type images. Can you share some basic principles about which images you put into RM (presumably Alamy mainly?) and which go to the other microstock agencies. I have all my images spread on both sets of site, and I do get a few sales on Alamy, but no way could I ever make enough on that one site to compensate for the loss of sales on the microstock agencies. I've always wondered if someone finds my image on Alamy and then goes to buy it on SS or IS, as I get zooms that don't result in purchases, and purchases that don't seem to have associated zooms.

Hi David

Hope the trouble shooting is going well! Can you let us all know when you think this will be fixed. I have a large stack of images that I am holding back until it is clear which sites they will be distributed to.

Lightburner is one of the few services in microstock that I would definitely pay for. I upload to about 22 sites and having the ability to just send my files to one location and see them all distributed to all sites is a great service. If you could extend that to some video sites, it would be awesome. Have you thought about starting to charge for anything above the main 4 sites, perhaps and building up the support team? I, for one, would pay monthly for this service.

General Stock Discussion / Re: January 2012 earnings
« on: February 01, 2012, 11:03 »
Not my best month, but still pretty reasonable with total earnings of around $1150. I've continued to upload images to the main sites, and over the months that has had an effect, and also spreading myself across more agencies results in more steady performance as each site goes through its ups and downs. Shutterstock was the best as usual, but iStock is really growing for me. I keep adding my 20 images a week, and refresh my Photo+ collection as necessary, but both the main agency and the partner earnings were a BME. Here are the usual graphs, more details on my blog.

"which microstock site/sites is/are best to start for a beginner and WHY ?"

Interesting question. I've always recommended CanStock as the first site. Why? Because their reviews are very fast, they are pretty fair in terms of standards - they reject poor images, but they don't have the "too many images" problem that Dreamstime has. So you can get a good feel for whether you are putting forward the right sort of images pretty quickly on that site.

I've recommended that to all the buyers of my eBook (and a few friends as well) without any negative views so far.

A pretty good month to say we have two major holidays to take the buyers attention away from stock photos! Another month over $1000, with BME for both Shutterstock and iStock. Full results are discussed on my blog: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2012/01/earnings-in-december-from-selling-photos/, but here is the overall graph of earnings growth over the past two years:

I've focused more on getting images online, adding about 150 to Shutterstock this last month, and the earnings are based on average number of images of around 2000.

General Stock Discussion / Re: How was your 2011?
« on: January 01, 2012, 11:36 »
Very good for me, although I am still in the growth phase. I've just written about it on my blog: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2012/01/annual-review-of-microstock-activities-in-2011/, but here are the overall numbers for the year:

I've focused on adding images during the year, and hopefully improving their quality and saleability, and have now passed the 2000 image point on Shutterstock. iStock still lags way behind because of restrictions on uploads. What is interesting is that my earnings per image per month has increased during the year - I like to think it is because I am taking better images, but it will be interesting to see if it continues:

New and smaller sites are still a bit of a gamble. Photodune has been good, Stockfresh not so good. Allyoucanstock shows promise. iSignstock (new to me) is pretty consistent. Crestock, Cutcaster, Zoonar are dead as far as I'm concerned.

A comment (and perhaps a request for views from the forum)

I'm getting a ton of images rejected for "no property release for recognizable property." This is happening on generic shots of the old buildings in Warsaw, and most recently on this one:

http://allyoucanstock.com/index.jsp?page=stock&spage=detail&stockid=12988

I don't know which country's laws the site is trying to apply, but property releases of such generic images are never required, in my experience. If you read Dan Heller (and this is a great resource: http://www.danheller.com/model-release-copyrights.html), property releases are almost never required as property does not have the same rights as people...

You can change all your portfolio at once from 50%. Here are the instructions I got:

"You can change your settings for your pictures at: Contributor Portal -> Image Management -> Policy Management -> Edit existing images -> set all of my ... COMMISSION image to = 30%

The settings for the future will be posted here.
Contributor Portal -> Image Management -> Policy Management -> Default settings -> Newly uploaded images shall have following default settings -> commission (If you offer this image via PantherMedia
(or equally / more expensive) stockagencies, you will receive commission 50% If you commission also offer cheaper via stockagencies this image, please enter 30%) -..> 30% or 50%."

I had mine at 50% for a long time, but hardly seemed to sell anything. I always thought it was very strange that the commission we receive should depend on whether we sell elsewhere - so Panther sells them at whatever price they set, but pay us less if we have them selling on Shutterstock? I also get occasional small subscription sales from this site - what does that mean in terms of "expensive sites."

Anyway, I have changed all mine to 30% to see if that improves sales any.

how is your sales of images from the last 3 months doing on SS?

Down, I think. I used to see a bump in sales when I uploaded new images, but in the past three months or so, a much less pronounced (almost non existent) bounce. I put it down to my most recent (November/early December) images not being as good, but perhaps it is broader than that. I don't really track sales of individual photos very much, but I do notice a lack of new images in the daily downloads on SS.

I do seem to have been getting a few more ELs, but on older images.

General Stock Discussion / Earnings per image growing in 2011
« on: December 10, 2011, 15:02 »
I publish my earnings and the number of images I have online each month, but I've never really analyzed what was happening below the surface, and so I spent an hour or two going through the earnings for the top 10 sites (for me) and working out the earnings per image per month from those sites, and tracked how it changed through 2011. What is really interesting is that at both Shutterstock and iStock, the earnings per image have increased in Q3 and Q4 (two months in Q4). I can explain the iStock results - Photo+ seems to have made a big difference to me on that site. Shutterstock is more of a guess - perhaps the quality of my images has gone up, maybe I am uploading more saleable images - who knows! iSignStock has grown nicely as well in terms of earnings per image. Here is the graph - there are more details on the original blog post: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2011/12/earnings-per-image-what-can-you-make-from-each-photo/

At present, my total earnings are $0.75 per image per month. Of course I have no idea if that is good or bad, but I'll continue to track as the months roll by!

Steve

This month was OK - not the best, but maintaining a nice steady pattern of being the fourth month over $1000. Istock for me continues to be pretty good. It was low over Thanksgiving, and the past couple of days have been a bit of a mystery, but since Photo+ was established, I've doubled my iStock earnings and kept steady at around $200 a month. I've continued to add files (with their 20 a week limit), but I'm sure Photo+ made most of the difference in earnings. More details as usual on my blog, but here are the graphs:

. This last graph shows the number of files online on each site.
