I should just be taking pictures of rich women passing by beggars,

Oh they pulled that image after initially getting through LN, strange.

It is quite a challenge as I do not include people in any of my submissions and tend to shoot landscape, nature, historic, and bridges.
Why I do not like photographing people is that I once asked 2 people, who I did not know, but were an integral part of an image, to sign a model release, and they demanded money or would not sign unless I 'coughed up' loot.
That put me right off from that moment on.

Yea, I see what you mean, not sure I would give my signature if someone asked me on a street...it's just weird. For the right image a payment may be OK.

Try to capture from behind or as silhouettes and should be OK most of the time if you get a lenient reviewer. I managed to get myself some model-released stock images of a young dude who's building a modeling portfolio. A nice exchange!

The danger of submitting the same images to too many agencies is that if one or more of the agencies is struggling (as they are now), they may resort to desperate tactics and give steep discounts to buyers.

A smart buyer may shop around...let's say he/she needs an extended license and sees the same image at both SS and Dreamstime, I wonder who the buyer will choose and you're fked as a contributor. Then there's all the legalese to pull images.

I see Fotolia/Adobe Stock as up and coming so sending them more of my stuff. Also going to try out Pond5 for my footage which I'm learning.

Here's another one Alamy LN accepted, although a common recurring theme...

Milan, Italy - July 14th, Woman carrying a luxury carrier bag passing by a beggar in the luxurious center of Milan Italy

The rest of them direct traffic or drive around in cars. I don't suppose they'd mind being photographed though they might object if they were engaged in an arrest. There's hardly any crime here - not of the cops and robbers kind, anyway.

That's how I felt when I was in Dubai recently

Did it sell from LiveNews?

Yes, they accepted as LN.

"Milan, Italy. 12th July, 2017. A man who appears to be a migrant pleads to police at Milan's Parco Sempione. Italy is home to many refugees fleeing war and poverty in North Africa and the Middle East"

Would have loved to have taken more shots but the cops started chasing me down lol but eventually left me alone.

Well, if they were getting bribed its news - otherwise it's three cops and three black guys in a park which is a non-event.

It's a major drug dealing spot + migrant crisis + defensive cops = newsworthy

I checked the law in Italy and there's nothing against taking pics of police out in public. How is it like where you guys live?

Good stuff. Most of it isn't Micro quality (in a good way), with the exception of some of the tulip fields/windmills, and London skyline. The rest would be best as fine art prints, in my opinion. Look into Arcangel images as some of your images could be covers of books, also Trevillion seems interesting.

Have you ever entered into photography competitions...I think some of these are worthy.

Nice style, I can see you put in a lot of time into these shots in the middle of winter with long exposure, which takes patience and discipline.

And is it problematic to sell the same image on one macrostock site while also selling it on a microstock site?

It depends on the licensing conditions...midstock/macrostock agencies may want exclusivity. If not exclusive you cannot legally license RM at midstock/macro and RF at micros.

BTW - Most of my work is landscape, I dont expect to to be a big seller, its probably not that commercial.

It depends on how unique they are, if you can provide a link with a sample that would be helpful for me/us to judge better on their marketability.

whose good, whose bad?

Some images are better suited to some agencies so difficult to say exactly. I have lists of microstock/midstock agencies on my blog but won't dare say who's good or bad, just how much they give in commission and types of images that they specialise in (more relevant to Midstock 'boutiques'). It appears that Adobe Stock is up and coming so i'd probably focus your energies on them, along with Shutterstock and Alamy (editorial) - that's what I'm doing.

Good luck, it's tough out there and applaud you for your enthusiasm, remember it's a marathon not a sprint!

Did you leave image stabilisation on, while on a tripod? The sudden appearance of the plane would make the camera think the scene is changing due to movement, which may have caused the wobble.

Yes. I was using a tripod. I will switch it off next time, thanks for the tip. I tried to compensate on software later anti-wobble.

Are you shooting using a flat/neutral colour profile?

No post-processing, straight out of the camera.

I'll go back to the same scene in late summer/early autumn as it's way too hazy now.

Here's some Live News I captured today...don't think the cops were too happy to see me taking their pic (maybe they were getting bribed), fk them, we live in a democracy

How would you approach this?

No harm in submitting and seeing where you stand. It looks like it will be OK.

I think it's a nice shot but they may reject it for noise (difficult to see from a thumbnail).

Good luck

For whatever it's worth, here's my latest attempt:

Good stuff. That angle doesn't work.

I've decided what I'll do...I can just about get the small aperture in one of the holes from the fence and see what I can do at full zoom (300mm on a crop sensor). Here's what I captured with the still and hope to replicate with footage with hopefully better lighting conditions.

This is cropped because the edges are vignette due to the wires so may have to crop on the videos too (not sure how to do it but i'll figure it out).

Thanks (almost) everybody for your comments  :D

I can see some planes for a length of 3 frames. What's the point of timelapsing if the landing can't be seen?

How about this wobble wooble one?

https://youtu.be/eK2TObqDgcM

I need to try to find a better angle somewhere...no doubt

Shot this one today:

Please critique. 20 mins into 17 seconds at 64x.

Great stuff! I need to improve a lot, that's a given.

Any free software anybody would recommend to start off with to post-process the video...then perhaps something that's inexpensive (I'm on PC btw)? Also need some ND filters...I have one for my 10-20mm but need one for my 24-70mm.

Any tips on my latest two time-lapses?

Managed to get the shutter speed down to 1/40 secs.

Any commercial value on these?

Thanks in advance

In fairness - as a former newspaper editor I would rather have a current pic of people on a beach than a stock one which might be years old to illustrate a heat wave. People would be likely to spot things which date an old image and wonder why you paired it off with a current news story.

That's true, especially if people are taking selfies with an Iphone 4 or other outdated models.

after getting the photos online, how much time do you wait before deciding if a subject is worth exploring further?

At least 4 months. It takes a while for some images to rise up the key word order. Some of my images from February have only started selling now...

Quote
Do you think this time-frame should be different for a new vs an established portfolio?

I don't think it makes that much difference whether it's an established portfolio or new. Perhaps an established portfolio may get some more sales as a buyer may see similar images in your portfolio.

There is nothing wrong with sharing information in the forums, and there is nothing wrong with charging for quality content... but if everyone is charging for quality content, then this place becomes a shop rather than a forum.

I agree and have toned down on the promoting. Now let's all help each other and be happy, there's too much division in the world as it is.  :)

Those don't seem to be captioned as live news items though, do they? They should have location and date at the start of the description for the live news feed. Or is that optional?

Alamy don't have this requirement, strangely.

I've been submitting to their live news feed since they launched it and I think it's a great idea as the image is live almost right away...other agencies, including SS, just take too long and sooner or later the news isn't breaking anymore. As for the weather stuff, it's not live news and more like stock since a buyer can easily find a summer beach scene in the archives to illustrate an article. Maybe if it was a smog scene due to worst air quality in years, that's different.

Sharing doesnt usually cost someone money.

Quality content should not be shared for free, in my opinion. I invested 6 months on researching, drafting and editing. Then hired a copywriter and designer which were expensive (should I expect them to work for free?)

Even after all investments I do share free stuff but I still need to run a business. :)

Hope, fresh ideas and success stories is what sells. I have everyday life for "Brutally Honest Grounding"! Maybe have a chapter like "pitfalls and precautions" but overall keep it upbeat. Also something else to reconsider, I've read somewhere that 90% of internet book sales come from the tittle - intriguing and exciting is the key...

One more very important thing: Illustrations, vectors, video & audio is also considered Microstock, no Guide is complete without them (not to mention graphic and video templates, PSD actions and staff that you find in Envato that could be also considered Microstock). All those are far less expensive to produce (except video) and have, in average, far higher RPI & RPD from photos. I'd gladly give you my two bits about vectors but if you want to cover the whole subject you need to interview many more people...

I hope this was helpful
Wish you all the best!

Great feedback and yes helpful.

You're right that I approached the industry in a pessimistic tone and it may put some readers off. So much so that one of my chapters was called "Getting . out of Microstock", was toned down to "Opportunities Outside of Microstock", together with a softer language in the body (learn --> earn a bit to cover some costs --> look elsewhere for opportunities). In my book and blog I write extensively about diversification, such as submitting premium images to Midstock agencies, photography competitions, Print on Demand & fine art photography.

I completely agree about vectors, footage and illustrations as a way to diversify. I've only recently started on footage, as a way to find other viable opportunities, and would be foolish to write anything about it at this stage due to my inexperience, unless it was an interview with someone who's been doing it for a while.

I would gladly take up your offer to interview you for a blog post about vectors, I'll PM you - thanks.

Alex
