Alamy.com / Re: Measures not showing all results
« on: November 27, 2018, 07:27 »
An on-going problem for years with Alamy Measures is that the table doesn't show the last few lines of results. Usually you wouldn't even know, but on days like today when I could only find some of my 7 zooms, I know that there is more data there that's hidden. The way to see the missing data is to sort on another column. I've checked this again today in 2 different browsers, to rule out particular browser formatting issues, and on both browsers the last 9 lines of Measures are not displayed when using the default sorting on the Total Zooms column.
My default seems to be Your Zooms (that's where it is whenever I got into my measures. I guess I must have set it up that way, but I don't remember!
Or are you talking about All of Alamy?
If I want to see my zooms, it makes more sense for me to choose 'Your images' rather than AoA. IMO - YMMV.

Alamy.com / Re: Today Bites- REFUND by Alamy again
« on: November 26, 2018, 13:09 »
To clear the info in my post #3 above:
I contacted Alamy and they replied:
"These sales are both from the same customers, they purchased the editorial website
license in error so this was refunded and our sales team helped them purchase the
correct license on 19 November for TV use."

So all is well in my world, Go Alamy!  8)

@Nobody: have you had your refund rebought?
Oops, I didn't notice that Nobody has left the building.  ::)

Any suggestions on how to take down Unsplash, pixabay, pxhere and the likes to force them to close for good? They're clearly driving the prices down, and eating from our sales.
Not unless you can prove they're doing anything illegal, like giving away stolen files.
Otherwise, it's just what the trad agency members wished they could do with iS, then SS et al, when they started.

I thought 'they' always said that the (only?) advantage of low-cost subs was that lots of pics would be purchased on spec., maybe several for one layout, but not used.
To be honest, if big companies/buyers are that stingy, they deserve to 'lose' files.

They also bookmark a picture for future ref's go back and because of the constan search-change they cant find it!...oh well...
So they bookmark a single picture, and when they try to get it again, the URI for that picture has changed:?
Run a mile from SS in that case. If that's really so, they have totally lost the plot.
(Though to be honest, I can't see how the 'constant search change' would mean a single bookmarked pic couldn't be found. That would have to be a deliberate URI change.)

Not to hijack but I had really big sale 15. Oct. and this thread got me thinking, where it said "Date purchased / refunded" two dates should be included right?
No, but I'm not sure what you meant.
Are you saying the file was purchased, then refunded? If so, that is recorded in two different rows.

Stills only.

US seems to account for 1/3 of my $$ on iStock, which is quite surprising as <5% of my content is US. However, it seems a lot of my bigger Getty sales are to the US, so that could explain it. Not sure how to tell what proportion of my sales is to the US.

In the GODs, November was always far and away my BMY, but not since 2013.

I have few sales to the US via Alamy, about 4% of my Alamy content is directly US based. However, again the payments to the US tend be higher (probably (RM only) due to larger circulation rates of publications there compared to here, but I don't know that for sure).

So for me, and to my surprise, the US is a significant market.

As for the multiple sales of the same image mentioned in this thread - I believe this can happen with book sales, particularly educational books where a different copy is produced for students and teachers. That's what has been suggested to me in the past, and it makes sense.
That would be relevant to RM, but not for RF sales.

The more people who check for undeclared uses and chase Alamy, the more likely they'll take it seriously enough to make some changes to the reporting system.
Don't hold your breath.

Unlike yours Sue mine all came from the same country, just the usage changed on the lower price license. We never know if the first was a demo and the second was the real customer? Oddly I had one DL for a smaller size, then a day later much larger version, they never took the time to get a refund and paid for both. I liked that!
Do you sell RF there or RM?
I've had two sales of the same file on the same day, but several scenarios have been suggested for that, under RM.

the other who shoots only when going out to make dog pipi and complain   that he not earn nothing
That person is still doiong better than the person who earns $2k but has expenses of $2001k, and tax to pay on the $2K.
That other person (not the pipi person) must not be very smart, since expenses can be deducted from taxes.
To some extent. It never seems to be as much as the actual expenses, though. Also, it varies from country to country what counts as legitimate expenses.

What would be an example of an illegitimate expense then? That is still an expense.

I can't say I know the tax laws in every country but I'm pretty sure that in most civilized countries, the tax in this case would be $0.  :)

I've often read of differences in what's allowable in the US vs the UK. I employ an accountant, and it never seems like all the expenses I send are taken off the tax in full, and I don't even count big trips when I'm shooting virtually non-stop other than sleeping and eating.

In any case, I bet the $2k earner is spending much more time preparing, shooting and in post, and time is money.

The only point I was making is that earnings don't tell the full story.

seven year old post and we are making less now!  :-[
and people are saying exactly the same as they were then ;-)

This would be a good test if someone started the same poll again, so we could see the change from 2011 to now. OK I'll be someone?

Different people, different ports, different times.
FWIW, 2011 was my second best year, and only $60 below my best year, 2012.
This year is heading to be about 1/3 of that.

Every refund on Alamy, for me, has been followed by a license of the same image, in a day or two, different terms. Also lower price, but still sold, and paid.
It would be nice if I got a refund of the original sale, but that's five days now ...
Could be a project which was cancelled. I've had that before.

And in Good News, my pic has been rebought ... so the $50 gross/refunded file was resold for $65 gross!

Go Alamy!!!   :)

Later: No, now it's in my Sales History and it seems like a total coincidence.
The refunded sale was, as above:
Country: Worldwide
Usage: Editorial, Editorial - websites, apps, social media and blogs (excludes advertising). Worldwide for 5 years.
Media: Editorial website
Image Size: Any size
Start: 28 October 2018
End: 28 October 2023

Today's sale of the same file is:
Country: Japan
Usage: Editorial
Media: Television (editorial)
Print run: Unlimited transmissions
Placement: Use within body of show
Start: 15 November 2018
End: 15 November 2023
To include use on the Open University website

Oh well, it's still a nice sale!

I thought Istock said are while back once you were accepted they would accept anything other than for legal compliance reasons.

I don't think that was ever officially stated (BICBW), but certainly for photos, that's how it has seemed for a while.
However, they seem to be more picky for illustrations.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Any sales at Picfair?
« on: November 18, 2018, 08:16 »
I just looked at that site for the first time, so searched an area I'm very familiar with.
Really nice photos, but a lot are marked 'commercial', which almost certainly don't have releases.

Oh, I see that they have three categories:
Editorial & Personal Licence
Editorial use - print, online, and broadcast; personal use.

Commercial Licence
Editorial use; personal use; promotional and marketing use; advertorial and social media.

Advertising Licence
Print advertising, out-of-home advertising, broadcast advertising, & display advertising; merchandising and retail product packaging.
Licences are allocated after the images have gone through our three-stage moderation process, which usually takes one working day.

Hmmm, wonder how legally 'safe' these commerical uses are for unreleased property?
(That said, I've had sales on Alamy of marked 'unreleased' images specifically for '...marketing: excludes advertising...' which I don't pretend to understand.)

I see Picfair says, "Licences are allocated after the images have gone through our three-stage moderation process, which usually takes one working day.
Contributors agree to the relevant contributor agreements for all three types of licence upon upload, so that when the licence is allocated, images are available to license straight away. "

I haven't looked at their contract, but it looks from the above that they must be assuming responsibility for any legal issues. I'd want to be extremely sure about that via their contract, though.

I personally think that if you have 5,000 pictures online, you should be able to stabilize at 500 knives a month. However, in the following time, you can slowly and occasionally pass the map gradually. You don't need to be tired. Preconditions must be There are 5000 good pictures, can't be the same picture!
There really is no predicting what will happen.
Back in the day, I was earning >$500 pm with c3000 non-commerical images on iS alone. Nowadays, to earn that amount of money, you'd need to expend much more than that.
I'm currently earning about 1/3 of what I was then with c4000 images, but I haven't submitted there for 2.5 years. I keep reading that new files get little action (only one person disagreeing), so I'm not sure keeping uploading there would make much difference, though I may relent and resubmit one of my categories (which seldom even gets viewed on Alamy) there in the new year, still thinking about it.

From what I'm reading in various places, exclusives offering highly commercial multi-model and location-released images are selling well, but their expenses are also very high.

My point is you can't make any predictions/projections based on what's happening today. I made a steady increase on iS for five years, one rapid fall, then a steady decrease since (avarage rpd less than a quarter of what it was in 2011/2). (Couldn't have predicted back then that iS would introduce subs, far less extremely low paying PA. Until that bombshell, iS had been working to increase prices.)

Now we see the once-loved SS being lambasted all over.

We allowed ourselves to be so indoctrinated to accepting SS's low prices that people are cheering that Adobe has set a minimum payout of 33c (although some prices there are still much lower than that).
It's our fault: we conditioned buyers to think the value of an image is extremely low, where in fact that's only likely to be profitable for a small selection of high-selling images.

1371
As the correct withholding rate is 30%
https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/withholding-of-tax
the question is really 'why is SS only taking 15%?'
Because according to SS's own page, they should be charging 30%
https://forums.submit.shutterstock.com/topic/37394-withholding-taxes-non-us-submitters-answering-your-questions

This assuming your country has no tax agreement with the US and that you filled in the relevant forms correctly for each agency.

1372
I'm totally new to video but comments like this make me want to stay away from shutterstock and stick with Pond5.  I'm I right on that?
If only people had stayed away from SS's 25c subs.  :(

Newbie Discussion / Re: What do u think about FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHER?
« on: November 17, 2018, 11:56 »
I find that being a woman seems to raise less hackles when I'm shooting editorial.
I once read an interview with a well-known woman documentary photographer who could get into places men couldn't, because those in charge didn't believe she was a PJ.

1375
Maybe they've got of these deals whereby they pay the appropriate licence only if they well, and it's all done on trust?
Or maybe not.
Any idea which agency they're being lifted from?
